rikkus··on I still miss my headphone jack, and I want it back
Something very wrong in the stack there. There should be a delay in the video in order to compensate for the latency sending the audio to your ears (Bluetooth does not add much here but it all adds up) and you should experience no latency.
rikkus··on I still miss my headphone jack, and I want it back
I bought one and put it on the end of a headphone cable and left it there. I’m not sure what the massive inconvenience is here.

I switch between iPhone and MacBook sometimes. My flow is usually turning off Bluetooth on the iPhone then selecting the AirPods from the MacBook, or similar. It doesn’t feel like much of a pain but it does seem like there could be an easier way. If the Bluetooth icon/menu on each device could have a ‘move AirPods to iPhone/MacBook/iPad’ option, and maybe a ‘move from’ on other devices.

I use them with my laptop too. I have had only one ‘pairing seems a bit broken’ issue since buying them as soon as they came out - and an iPhone restart was the fix. That’s about 2.5 minutes of hassle in several thousand hours of use.

If they were a pain, I would stop using them, but they are much less hassle than the many pairs of corded headphones I have. This said, other Bluetooth headphones are much more hassle.

rikkus··on The Insect Apocalypse Is Here
I don't use a herbicide on my lawn - I didn't realise it was normal to do so

What's produced in return is a lawn that you can use - for all the purposes people use lawns. I'm not sure what's so ridiculous about this.

rikkus··on Parliament seizes cache of Facebook internal papers
He isn’t legally required by the laws of a land but it was felt by many that he did, in fact, owe his presence.
rikkus··on Why Do Laptop Makers Have Such Terrible Websites
I’m not sure who actually buys from their website. I’ve tried to use it in its various incarnations over the years and it’s been terrible every single time. I think perhaps they mainly sell direct to corporates and to retail channels so the site isn’t something they care about getting sales from.

And for those who like to post code snippets in (currently still) esoteric languages like Elixir - and from a nice CMS?
rikkus··on Google Earth for live radios
I keep this on my bookmarks bar and dip in often. It reminds me of when, as a child in the UK, I made a crystal radio from a kit and spent late evenings hunting for intesting stations from continental Europe.
rikkus··on Tech giants face 2% UK digital services tax
I believe the GP's incorrect 'by the letter' use of the term was intended to point out that this kind of avoidance is more like evasion in that it is against the spirit of the law.
rikkus··on “Stress Hormone” Cortisol Linked to Early Toll on Thinking Ability
You'll feel normal again. It's going to take time and tactics, though. Do plenty of reading on how to deal with stress and you'll find mechanisms. It can take months, yes, but the time to feeling 'normal' again can be cut with the proper measures.
rikkus··on Looking Glass, a revolutionary window manager revealed in 2006
In 1997 my Comp Sci undergrad dissertation was on the '3D desktop'. The C++ code I wrote for my demo did software 2D on svgalib on the Linux console (there was some way to get a high res mode, I don't remember what exactly).

I didn't have video or semi-transparency, but I'd gone for a similar idea of clearing windows out of the way - sitting at angles on the sides of the screen.

I realised too late that what I really wanted wasn't 3D, but documents as first class citizens, with modular tools working on documents rather than monolithic applications.

If you clicked on a file icon it would graphically 'open' the file and bring it to the foreground for viewing, then you'd bring tools to it - for example, you'd have application-agnostic text tools for text editing.

I started adding things like 'filters' - where you'd drop a file on a filter icon and it would be animated going through the filter and dropping onto the 'desktop' underneath - e.g. you would be able to apply troff+pic and get a diagram.

It was all naive and probably based on ideas that others were having and I'd seen around (e.g. articles about OS/2), but it was enjoyable discovering more and more ideas as I dug further. My real inspiration was, I believe, TkDesk, which wowed me when I saw I could edit the functionality of my desktop /on the fly/.

What we have in modern desktop environments is great, so I'm a bit sad that the idea of a powerful desktop environment seems to never have taken off as far as some of us hoped was possible. Maybe it just doesn't work!

Anyway, back to the command line...

rikkus··on New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub
The reason I am happy with the 6s is that there's a big difference in speed from the 6 and earlier hardware. It's probably not quite as snappy as newer models, yes, but lag in moving around is something that I can't stand - and I find the 6s doesn't annoy me.
rikkus··on New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub
Yes. iPhone 6s is what I’m sticking with until they double the battery life (in real use, not watching a video) or do something else I might actually care about.

rikkus··on Microsoft suspends Windows 10 update, citing data loss reports
I once had to leave to catch a plane and shut down my Windows desktop machine that I wanted to move somewhere first. I think this was as far back as XP days. It started doing updates on shutdown and I was concerned I’d lose data or break something if I powered it off (it did say not to!) so I was stuck waiting for updates but needing to catch a plane.

rikkus··on How solid is Tim’s plan to redecentralize the web?
I don’t run any forums at the moment, but when I did, the software I used gave users massive opportunity to provide information about themselves. Some users loved this and filled in every field, perhaps because they enjoyed that it made socialising easier.

The problem for anyone wanting to host a forum is that using off-the-shelf software is a sensible route, but the available software might still be leaning towards offering to collect data like this, might not yet have support for GDPR disclaimers, checkboxes, etc.

What I’m saying is let’s assume neither malice nor incompetence and instead that those wishing to host forums may be hamstrung by the available software.

rikkus··on Facebook Is Giving Advertisers Access To Your Shadow Contact Information
Hmm the information isn't the algorithm. It would be excellent if the courts could get them to release this data!
rikkus··on Facebook Is Giving Advertisers Access To Your Shadow Contact Information
Yes using information for a purpose other than it was collected for. Hopefully this means in Europe we won’t see this spam.

This is important. But it's still great for people to see that a minimal implementation (for playing with) only takes this much code. It's good when you're learning.

rikkus··on That XKCD on voting machine software security is wrong
These are handled by the vote counting humans. There are rules about what counts as s valid marking of the paper. Anything else gets discarded. I don’t see a problem with this.

My top five in the 'Average Energy Impact' column of the Energy tab in Activity Monitor, as of this moment:

Docker (3.13) Dropbox (2.08) Outlook (2.03) Safari (2.02) Slack (1.57)

Total 131771 files currently on disk (I'm using Selective Sync, because SSD prices)

rikkus··on iTerm2 has a new drawing engine that uses Metal 2
I keep being told I must use iTerm2 and I have been. But I haven’t found anything it does that is better than the built in Terminal app. I’m going back to Terminal unless I find some reason to stick with it.
