rickreynoldssf··on Fandom Acquires GameSpot, Giant Bomb, GameFAQs, TV Guide and Metacritic
I probably should clarify that GameSpot never intentionally ran malicious ads. We shut them down as soon as they were discovered and many people on staff were vigilant about finding them. It just goes to show the need to go to bottom barrel ad networks when we couldn't sign anything else.

Oh... I did not know that. I don't follow the site any more. A week or two ago I saw what I thought was a recent clip with Jeff in it. Good for him!

I'm an Ex-Engineering Manager at GameSpot & Giantbomb at CBS (2013-2016). All the stuff Dave mentioned was very much the same when I was there. The unit was always in trouble losing money quarter after quarter and focus was always on the ad sales. E3 was the biggest time for revenue and it was stressful in the lead up to it hoping we'd sign enough to keep things going. It got progressively worse each year. Towards the end of my tenure they were inflating video views given to ad buyers by including video views on other platforms like Facebook where we received no revenue at all and could place no ads. Also at the time Facebook considered a view when the video was visible on the feed for a second. The numbers were wildly inflated. And we were running ads from sketchy networks all the time, some of which were malicious.

A good part of the revenue eventually was generated by cheaply generated meme content while longer form, crafted content was suffering. I'm honestly surprised they're still going. I assumed Jeff would peel off with most of the Giant Bomb guys and start something new by now. All that's left there is the Giant Bomb personalities and even that's not enough to float GameSpot and the others. GameFaqs should probably go back to its original owner.

These days when I tell actual gamers I used to work on GameSpot, they always think I mean GameStop and then don't even know what GameSpot is. It is a pretty pointless thing now given you can watch any number of Twitch streams to see what any game is like and is worth playing.

...anyway I'm sure this was a fire sale of an asset CBS forced Red Ventures to take in order to get CNET. I'm also surprised it took this long for Red Ventures to dump it.

*Edit* Ok wow I did not realize the Giant Bomb as I knew it completely fell apart. So Jeff did leave as did Vinny and Brad and they are doing their own things now. I don't know anything about the new crew but I don't see how any can complete with even the most mediocre Twitch streamer.

51 grey beard here. Let me complain about the younguns. So much of what's out there today is, or is based on "solutions" created to solve problems that don't really exist. Rather than try to understand something so many engineers created "frameworks" to implement what was already there. Like 90% of current web stacks are just that. But new engineers are trained on that stuff and think it's the only way. That frustrates the hell out of me.

rickreynoldssf··on What's the deal with all those weird wrong-number texts?
If you get a text (not What's App) reply with "Do you know what happened in Tiananmen Square in 1989? Ask Winnie The Pooh, A Free Tibet or Uyghurs". That'll trigger a few Chinese monitors, or at least scare the scammers into thinking so.
rickreynoldssf··on Browser Extension to Bypass Media Sites Paywalls
Why isn't this in the Chrome store? There's other extensions that integrate with 12ft.io in the Chrome store (e.g. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/12ft-free/ljgfopbn...) so there's no rules against this kind of thing.

So I wonder what this extension in particular is doing that Google wouldn't approve of.

...also 12ft.io already does this for almost every paywalled site.

rickreynoldssf··on Network DDoS
Initiating a DDoS is costly in many cases. It exposes infected bot net nodes that will most likely be pulled off the botnet by their owners or ISPs. Botnet owners don't randomly let their botnet be used for anything unless they're paid well for it. Something this massive isn't for shits and giggles.
rickreynoldssf··on GitHub user sends notification to 400k users
You would think, there'd be some sanity checks on GitHib's side to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen, but no... it's not even going to question 400k notifications. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
rickreynoldssf··on Tether Required Recapitalization in May 2022
I think Tether is the ultimate "Fake it till you make it" organization in crypto. Its kind of a joke now but everyone is in on the joke but it will probably end up being the defacto crypto parking place once things get real in crypto (e.g. you can buy a house with it) and the adults come in and shake out the current management.

rickreynoldssf··on I employed a California resident, so now I’m subject to its regulations
No. When you use Justworks, they are the actual employer for your employees. So you're not doing any business whatsoever in another state.
rickreynoldssf··on I employed a California resident, so now I’m subject to its regulations
That's just a rookie business owner mistake. He should have used something like Justworks to handle the "employee" part of the business until he grew enough to have a dedicated HR person.

rickreynoldssf··on YouTube suspended my account for posting DeFi hackathon video
A lot of YouTube's "customer service" people are poorly trained contractors in India, may of which don't even understand English well. I've gone back and forth with them sometimes being asked for things that I clearly provided in previous emails and one time I got a reply with instructions that included a bunch of You Tube internal network only links (that were in India which is how I know where they are), then when I replied to that without providing anything they asked for (because I can't get to the links) was told I wasn't being cooperative. So its not always AI being dumb.

Unless they had a contingency plan in place Parler is dead. There's no way a site that big could be moved in 7 days. ESPECIALLY if they used the vendor lock-in features of AWS.
