rickreynoldssf··on The death of web development education
Most of the stuff these Ed-Tech companies taught is counterproductive. Much of it was unnecessary solutions to problems that didn't exist. So so many Web tools are things created because their creator didn't properly understand HTML, JavaSript, CSS and the DOM. Then these schools taught everyone these unnecessary things and they become the standard and made things overly complex and give us massive build times for stuff that was never meant to need a build phase in the first place.

LLMs with HTMX and plain old CSS and JavaScript (maybe Typescript) is the future. Getting back to little to no build times and frontends that don't take up 1+ GB of RAM on the clients

This is hitting at the right time. Codex is already in the enshitification phase. They just broke their CLI version with some new thing that no one likes.
rickreynoldssf··on Qwen Image 2.1
People it renders look Asian. If you give it a reference image of a caucasian it will render an Asian. I wonder why?
rickreynoldssf··on Fastpotify
To give you an idea of the kinds of Engineering decisions going on at Spotify, they do thousands of deploys per day and are PROUD of it.

Must be one of THE WORST engineering orgs running right now.

rickreynoldssf··on Starbase, LA
I wonder how many environmentalists are losing their shit over this and burring the lawsuit machine.
rickreynoldssf··on Incident with Github.com
Does anyone get the feeling that Microsoft is trying to kill GitHub in favor of ADO?
rickreynoldssf··on I recreated the Apple Lisa computer inside an FPGA [video]
I see this kind of thing and have two reactions.

1. Wow! That's so cool!

2. Why didn't someone this smart spend that time to build something that really matters?

rickreynoldssf··on What is going on right now?
I think a lot of the impressions of AI generating slop is a case of garbage in/garbage out. You need to learn HOW to ask for things. Just asking "write code to do X" is wrong in most cases. You have to provide some specifications and expectations just like working with a junior engineer. You also can't ask "write me a module that does X". You need to design the module yourself and maybe ask AI for help with each specific individual endpoint.

These juniors you're complaining about are going to get better in making these requests of AI and blow right past all the seniors who yell at clouds running AI.

rickreynoldssf··on The End of Handwriting
I was an artistic kid and essentially came up with my own distinct handwriting "font". It was beautiful. 35 years later, all typing, I've lost most of it. Now my handwriting is illegible especially because that "font" is still the way I write but I don't have the muscle memory to execute it any more. The whole use it or lose it is very real.
rickreynoldssf··on DOOM CAPTCHA
Kind of hard without strafe.
rickreynoldssf··on Busy Status Bar
You would probably get interrupted more by people wondering what that thing is.
rickreynoldssf··on John Carmack on inlined code (2014)
He's definitely not talking about 5 line functions and DRY.
rickreynoldssf··on John Carmack on inlined code (2014)
The clean code people are losing their collective minds reading that. lol
rickreynoldssf··on Show HN: If YouTube had actual channels
There was a startup called RheoTV started by ex-Apple people that did exactly that and it didn't work out.

There was also something called NeverThink that had the same fate.

rickreynoldssf··on Call the compiler, fax it your code [video]
That's got to be actually useful. I can't think how but there's got to be some situation where that is the best solution.
rickreynoldssf··on Collection of publicly available IPTV channels
Crashes my browser :(
rickreynoldssf··on The forgotten war on beepers
I'm old so... I remember when someone having a beeper was awe inspiring. "Oooh that dude must be a doctor!" After a while it became more like "Oh that dude's sketchy" and finally "Oh wow that dude must be poor"
rickreynoldssf··on OpenAI board reappoints Altman and adds three other directors
I can't wait for the book(s) that will have details about what really happened over that period of chaos.
rickreynoldssf··on Updates to US verification requirements
Chase will let you but then close your accounts within 6 months when their trust and safety team does their audit triggered by your transaction. It's a well known thing that Chase loves to boot customers for sneezing the wrong way while interacting with them.
rickreynoldssf··on Updates to US verification requirements
It's not so easy for customers to buy crypto to make these Web3 payments. If your bank is Chase you basically cannot without them closing all your accounts.
rickreynoldssf··on Every default macOS wallpaper
I still use a background tile from MacOS 7.5. I guess that makes me reallly old and a bit spectrumy
rickreynoldssf··on How I got scammed on Facebook Marketplace (2023)
I didn't even have to read the article to know how someone got scammed on Marketplace. Its nothing and I mean NOTHING but scams (oh with the exception of stuff people are giving away).
rickreynoldssf··on HP's CEO spells it out: You're a 'bad investment' if you don't buy HP supplies
Are personal printers really still a thing? I can count on 1 finger how many times I needed to print something in the past few years and FedEx Kinkos is perfect for that. I'd rather pay like $5 rather than have some bulky ugly thing taking up space on my desk.
rickreynoldssf··on Scammers are ruining Facebook marketplace
Reporting the scammers to Meta is pointless. I was bored a while ago and scambaited about 10. I posted stuff like couches bed frames etc. I built up a long chat history that plainly showed they were scamming them reported them. Weeks later all the accounts were still active and scamming. Funny thing is ALL the responses to my items were from scammers. No real person inquired and everything I posted was very nice high quality.
rickreynoldssf··on Ask HN: Netflix doing mass layoffs today?
This really shouldn't be a shock for Netflix employees. According to Netflix's culture page (https://jobs.netflix.com/culture) They are a team, not a family.

When you're on a team you know you can be cut at any moment. It's ruthless over there and the recruiters will make sure you're aware of that early in the interview process. Netflix was never known as a good place to work which is why they pay outrageous salaries and the average employment length is a little over a year.

rickreynoldssf··on YouTube doesn't want to take down scam ads
You're expecting too much from poorly trained contractors in India who review these reports (if a human reviews them at all).
rickreynoldssf··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
I'm not sure what was expected after they reverse engineered a private API and used it.
rickreynoldssf··on Okta says hackers stole data for all customer support users
Okta, you had one job! I don't understand why people still trust their user data to these guys.
rickreynoldssf··on Charlie Munger has died
I always remember him saying "I always tried to find ways to kill my pilots" referring to his days as a meteorologist in World War 2. This is in reference to "Reverse Thinking", the way I approach all my projects by trying to wreck them from the start and shipping once I can't.
rickreynoldssf··on What's new with JavaScript – ECMAScript 2024 (ES15)
I fear that pipeline operators will be overused and eventually become a community best practice unnecessarily bloating code. Also I don't see how this

    const calculatedValue = -10
      |> (n => Math.max(0, n))
      |> (n => Math.pow(n, 1/3))
      |> Math.ceil;
is easier to read / type than this

    let n = Math.max(0, -10);
    n = Math.pow(n, 1/3);
    n = Math.ceil(n);
...and I would bet the later is more performant.
