Honestly, I only signed up for Twitter to join Product Hunt. That was a huge disappointment when I found out that having an account didn't mean anything. This will be a pleasant change, it's about time.

My experience was very different from yours. Stayed on the front page 16 hours, spot #5 for 5 hours (iirc). Similar to you, I had to work myself up to even submit it. I procrastinated 2 hours before posting. Only told 1 friend I had posted. However, I'd consider mine very successful. I did not expect it to be, because if I had, I would have increased the Digital Ocean droplet and my server would not have crashed. Of the ~5 hours I was at spot #5, my server was down almost 3 hours between 3 different crashes.
I say this on reddit often, between Show HN and PH, people give PH way too much credit. Show HN is a great launching platform, just remember who the audience is.
Whether on purpose or not, it's definitely a form of switching costs. It's the same reason I stay on windows. Though windows 8 changed so many things I basically had to learn all over again. I can't do basic tasks at times and have to Google instructions for how to do them. Simply because they changed the interface.
Searching for "HipChat" will find companies that have a relationship with HipChat. If you're looking for HipChat competitors, I suggest searching for something like "private group chat" instead.
Sorry this wasn't very clear, I'm going to try changing the search form a little to make it more intuitive.
Thanks again for the feedback. :)
Edit: Would this placeholder text in the search box be more clear? "search by keywords..." Thanks.
One of the great things about RivalSeek is that it only shows you a competitor suggestion once. After you've decided relevant/not relevant, you won't see it again. If you subscribe, it will keep this memory and only alert you of new potential competitors it's not shown you before.
The issue you describe is because of a lag between your browser and the server. To fix it: click on the search term with the checkbox twice (by the "add search term" link). That will manually pull a fresh suggestion list from the server.
Sorry for this bug, should have it fixed soon. And thanks for your comment! :)
I put together a landscape for a friend the other day and within an hour had identified the top 100 electronic health record/electronic medical record vendors. :)
You can see a 30-second video of the app here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-TEgUb33sU
1) enter search term 2) identify competitors 3) view information on competitors
I've had to take the site down temporarily again to resize the disk space (it actually ran out of space!). The prior times I only increased RAM/CPU so it'd be quick. I'll post again once it's back up! :)
What was your search query? I'd like to investigate why, if I may. :)
I just re-wrote some of the code that's made it 2x more efficient, so it shouldn't freeze now. Try it again.
Just made these changes a couple minutes ago. So try your search again. If it's still not showing anything, your search phrase may be too specific. :)
Thanks for trying it!
To fix that issue (remove the duplicates), click twice on the keyword/checkbox at the top of the page beside "add search term." That will reload the list freshly from the server.
The issue comes from a lag in updating your selection of relevance on the server, most likely caused by the demand being placed on the server right now.
Thanks again. :)
I've seen people ask questions to try to get recognition in groups, and when they don't get it, they childishly leave the meeting.
This was a moment where I gained a lot of respect for Dave McClure: https://youtu.be/25TxrhsXFvs?t=46m14s
I've had 4 different choir directors through my life. The best was a man in high school that would get angry, throw his baton down, and walk out (of band). Never saw him do that in choir but I heard about it. He demanded that we were focused. In the select choir, all members were required to perform solos. I wasn't ready for mine, but he still forced me to do it (he refused to continue class until I sang). He was, beyond comparison, a better director than the others and the choir showed it.
Going back to Paul Graham, even if he didn't handle that as well as you think he should have, his overall personality certainly makes up for it. Anyway, it's good to see that he'll be honest and you can trust him to do that.
Is this online anywhere?
As far as cut-off: if the major experiment here is working with teams remotely, why question increasing the 20 seats? The number of applicants shouldn't affect that experiment as far as I know. If they're using this as a means to increase their reach for YC batches, that's another topic.
* New entries start with a vote of 0, the poster has to actually up-vote their own submission to get it to 1 (as opposed to automatically making it 1 like on reddit).
* The ranking appears to be a sum of up votes, only. Links that are added later (like now), show up at the very bottom and it's unlikely will reach the top. In a situation like this, to get attention, you're creating a race to post first. Consider some type of rank deterioration similar to reddit/HN.
That's exactly it. We always speak about solo founders and co-founders...because you need to show that you can "convince others of your vision." Musk has done this with some of the best minds. He pulled them together.
