richardbrevig··on Apple is turning The Oregon Trail into a movie
That's exactly how I've described it to others. No interest in Yellowstone itself, but loved this show and really enjoy 1923 as well.
richardbrevig··on Spaceship Earth
Here it is on Hulu: https://www.hulu.com/movie/spaceship-earth-e3636bb2-0aab-43b...
richardbrevig··on The Anti-Mac User Interface (1996)
The marketing terms here are continuous innovation (that doesn't change user behavior) vs discontinuous innovation (that changes user behavior).

richardbrevig··on The Joys of Being a Stoic
You may enjoy Plutchik's dyadic wheel of emotions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_connection#/media/File:...

In it, he lists anger as the opposite of fear. And shame is the combination of fear and disgust (the opposite of trust).

richardbrevig··on The Human Error Darwin Inspired
We should celebrate the move from traditionalism to innovation. Prioritizing tradition over rational thought held our species back for millennia.
richardbrevig··on How I stay motivated working on my long-term project
For the past month, I've written my thoughts into a daily journal. I then send that to a group that read it every day and respond. Had 15 a month ago but some were toxic. I'm now down to 5 people. I understand they don't understand possibly even most of what I write, but knowing they'll read it motivates me to express my thoughts--whatever they are at the time.

But yes to your point about the co-founder, they'll understand everything you're talking about.

richardbrevig··on Show HN: Read The Count of Monte Cristo and others in installments in your email
Not entirely off topic, but I recently attempted sharing my life story with people via daily written installments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUC2aFkBHiw&8d3=7f5h

The video basically introduces me and what I'm doing.

richardbrevig··on Why Simon Sinek is fundamentally wrong about starting with “why”
Why is very popular in the design community, like the five whys [0]. But now I'm always at odds when I speak about it after listening to Richard Dawkins and other scientists say "why is a stupid question." They advise to ask, "what led to this?" And doing that has helped me reframe situations and make discoveries.

Even still, why is a great shorthand in many contexts. :)

richardbrevig··on If founders treated their investors the same way they treated their employees
I don't believe he's talking about the employer, he's discussing the emotional well-being a job seeker would need. If the job seeker hates their own job, they're more likely to jump from one bad situation to another bad situation.

But you're right, and I've done that myself. Where I hated a job so badly and just pretended and smiled as much I could until someone hired me out of that situation.

richardbrevig··on Ask HN: Films that made you see the world differently?
Regarding Spartacus, I think you may really enjoy watching History Channel's Barbarians Rising.
richardbrevig··on Humans evolved to be cooperative breeders
Actually it's a sentence within the article. There's no article on sapiens.org with this title.
richardbrevig··on YouTube: Community contributions will be discontinued across all channels
Google Developers video [0] describing exactly how you should speak to users to get feedback: usability tests. This is pretty standard in the UX community. Here's Steve Krug, author of the Amazon top-selling book on web design "Don't Make Me Think," showing how to do it similarly [1].

Edit: added Steve Krug video.

richardbrevig··on Do not remain nameless to yourself (1966)
I used to do long personal emails.

I've recently started engaging my Facebook friends, Instagram followers, and new Tinder matches with daily installments. Not really a long letter, but the content is somewhere between a long letter and a short memoir. Many people are weirded out and confused but there are a number that really love it so far. I explain the concept in this video: https://youtu.be/zUC2aFkBHiw

richardbrevig··on Forced social isolation causes neural craving similar to hunger
Please review Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs [1]. I'm just communicating what he said in his book Motivation and Personality. His theory is taught in every introduction to psychology textbook.

richardbrevig··on Forced social isolation causes neural craving similar to hunger
Yes, all needs in the hierarchy are basic and necessary!
richardbrevig··on Americans, it turns out, would rather visit a store than buy food online
Today I received my first grocery delivery from Walmart. I'm extremely excited. I chose no substitutions so only one item wasn't available. What I love about it is that the person picking up the food actually knows the store. Walmart launched pick-up service over 2 years ago and now they're extending that with DoorDash for delivery. Granted, the delivery people still have problems finding my home, but access to Walmart's inventory is a huge improvement for me. Previously I was using Shipt and half of the time they'd just drop products like bananas or frozen blueberries or something else because they couldn't keep up with whether it was in the store or not, or if the store changed brands. The past 4+ orders from Shipt all had mistakes, usually multiple. Either incorrect product or just flat didn't deliver product but charged me for it (in that case I'd get a refund, didn't mess with wrong products).
richardbrevig··on Introducing Facebook Shops
> I bet they're working on a PayPal competitor...

They've allowed money transfer through Messenger for sometime now. The UX is probably the best I've had. I prefer sending money that way because it's through the debit card (easy set up), free, and instant.

richardbrevig··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
Is this response not accurate? I'm familiar with the book by title only, really. I've read The Fountainhead. Could someone downvoting typon please provide a better explanation?
richardbrevig··on Ask HN: What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?
It kind of floors me that we're taught science the way it is. Much simpler: Karl Popper's conjecture and refutation. So I tell people that science mandates "I believe something, so I should try to prove it wrong." I think understanding that is significantly more beneficial than repeating the arbitrary n- steps of a scientific method. It's two steps. Keep it simple.

richardbrevig··on How to balance full-time work with creative projects
Will you have a support network of friends or other people to regularly and daily spend time with? A month might not be enough time to slip into a loneliness caused depression...but set yourself up for success if you do this.
richardbrevig··on Show HN: Learn how to work remotely from people doing it every day
I know I'm unusual about this, but I really try to keep my conversations away from simply just normal happenings. I recognize this is probably a necessity to share our days, but I value people that speak about ideas more.
richardbrevig··on Ask HN: Any other blind devs interested in working on dev tools for the blind?
> I work for a non-profit where we tackle accessibility issues related to the web, documents, and tech in general.

What's the non-profit? Expose UX [1] is preparing an episode focused on accessibility for Global Accessibility Awareness Day: startups will get judged by UX judges based on the accessibility of their products. Would love to connect with your org.

richardbrevig··on App Makers Reach Out to the Teenager on Mobile
The general metrics I've observed on Instagram to show success:

- have at least twice as many followers as you follow

- have at least 10% the number of followers as likes per pic

So, you could have 700 followers, but follow no more than 350 people, and must get 70 likes or more per pic. That's "success." Granted, as you get into 2,000+ followers, it can get harder to maintain the 10%.
