retrobox··on Show HN: Chat with your contacts on different platforms without an app
I love the idea of this! Recently I was reminiscing about a time when it was easy to unify all your chat networks into one place. With people scattered across various platforms it’s handy to have something to bring it all together to one place
retrobox··on Shlinkedin – Satirical Social Network
Maybe once, but it feels like content on LinkedIn is becoming more and more like a Facebook or Twitter feed. Whether it’s people arguing over general neutral bathrooms or COVID-19 vaccinations.
retrobox··on Remind HN: .com prices increase Sep 1, 2021
Although with the caveat that you have to use their DNS, unless I’m missing something: https://developers.cloudflare.com/registrar/setup-domain-tra...
retrobox··on When six boys were shipwrecked for 15 months (2020)
Other reviews for this book on Goodreads are equally high effort. It’s not uncommon to see long and insightful reviews in the Goodreads community. I’d assume good intent :)
retrobox··on Johnny.Decimal
I can definitely see the appeal of this. Even for my personal files it’s a struggle sometimes to remember the exact name or structure I gave to files, even if the broad category in my head is memorised.
retrobox··on Flash Player EOL, Adobe Announces 12-Day Grace Period
The end of an era. Flash had many problems but it also enabled us all to develop rich content before browser support and cross platform compatibility was in the positive state it is today. It was a creative era of fun mini games and animated web comics. I definitely have some nostalgia
retrobox··on Otvdm/winevdm: run old Windows software in 64-bit Windows
This is going to sound weird but for one particularly old and tricky game, I had amazingly good success with ReactOS in a virtual machine. Moreso than running a virtual machine with Windows 95/98. However, I can't help but think there must be a better way.
retrobox··on After over 15 years, my Google account has been permanently disabled
Every other day I seem to read stories about accounts people have lost access to with Google and very little support to fix it.

Example from the other day, I noticed someone who lost access to their YouTube account but no real support to fix it. I'm dropping this here in case anyone from Google ever does read these discussions: https://twitter.com/MatRicardo/status/1318540789719486471

retrobox··on The most remarkable legacy system I have seen
I thought it sounded like Athena. It’s the best CI/CD I’ve ever used despite its quirks. I talk fondly of it at future jobs I’ve gone to
retrobox··on Split any song into its stems – vocals, instrumentals, bass, drums, piano
This is powered by Spleeter, an open source project from deezer, but repackaged with a UI: https://github.com/deezer/spleeter
retrobox··on Poka-Yoke is Not a Joke (2010)
You'd be forgiven for thinking so! It comes from Japanese, yoke (除け) meaning protection and poka (ポカ) meaning blunder, careless mistake, or error. Although it looks as if it would rhyme with joke, it's more likely to be said yoh-kay. If you're curious, paste ポカヨケ into Google translate, select Japanese, and hit listen :)
retrobox··on Gears
This is beautiful. Great explanations, and a really powerful interactive website. A really impressive and engaging page to pull it all together.
retrobox··on Yukihiro Matsumoto: “Ruby is designed for humans, not machines”
This ^

Perhaps it’s fairer to say a lot of my struggle so far is with a Ruby on Rails project.

I’ve had less exposure to Ruby without the Rails part, and maybe it’s regrettable that’s the case.

I’ve used frameworks in other languages and mostly always been able to dig back to the original source of things but I’ve not had such a positive experience with Rails and any of the IDEs out there.

retrobox··on Yukihiro Matsumoto: “Ruby is designed for humans, not machines”
All so incredibly relatable... thank you for sharing your experience.

I have pretty much 1:1 the same struggle and it was (is?) starting to knock my confidence - wondering if I’m just a bad developer for not “getting” it.

I often put off development tasks because I know it will all move at a snails pace trying to drudge through endless magic, having no idea where any of it comes from, getting very little back from Google, and giving up.

retrobox··on Yukihiro Matsumoto: “Ruby is designed for humans, not machines”
I’ve been trying to get into Ruby for a new job and am finding it hard.

Not being designed for machines is right - a lot of the IDEs seem bad and can’t even figure out where your methods come from. I don’t know how the interpreter manages to run it. Multiply the problem by 10 once you add rails and all the methods it generates.

It makes for a good, rapidly developed monolith but most places I’ve worked in recent times are moving to services and micro services and it doesn’t seem cut out for that.

retrobox··on KeePassXC 2.5.2
Only the look and feel. Meanwhile the cross platform compatibility of XC appeals to me. I never had much luck running Keepass 2 with mono whereas XC takes care of all the cross platform woes
retrobox··on KeePassXC 2.5.2
I really love all the work that has gone in to XC but I preferred the original look and feel of Keepass 2. I feel the need to get over that and try XC again. It’s great to see it continuing to get development and new features.
retrobox··on Counterfeits on Amazon cost Warren bird feeder business $1.5M
Maybe not in general but the issues with Amazon isn’t limited to .com. We get all the same problems with .co.uk, so I’d be interested in reading what happened
retrobox··on How Simple Analytics calculates unique visits without cookies or fingerprinting
Creative - I love this solution
retrobox··on Things to Read to Become a Better Human and Developer
It’s always great to have book recommendations. Does anyone have other “must read” book suggestions that have had a big impact on them?
retrobox··on We are making Sandboxie a free tool, with plans to transition it to open source
It’s great news that the source is being released, but I get the impression this essentially means the company will end active development and put the onus on the OS community for future updates.
retrobox··on NeverSSL
I often use this for awkward public WiFi hotspots. Short, easy to remember and keeps its promise ;)
retrobox··on Python Is Eating the World
I’m really glad to hear someone else voice these frustrations. I’ve really tried to embrace Python and everyone tells me how great it is. I feel like a failure as a developer but I dislike it so much I quit a job, that switched to Python as the primary language, and took a year off from development. I’m pretty much a polyglot as far as languages go but Python riles me.
retrobox··on Problems with the CSS background-image property
There are great points on SEO and accessibility, the latter which is sadly often an afterthought. However, the author does shoot themselves in the foot a little when the first "typical" example they offer is a div tag with an inline style="background-image: ...". It negates the the preceding point made on how it is bad for CMSes and CDNs and shackles them. Finally, advocating a polyfill to support the small number of users that don't need object-fit could potentially add more render-blocking for everyone if not done carefully.
retrobox··on Zstandard v1.4.1
Zstd is awesome. I’d love to see desktop archive software include these algorithms. There’s a fork of 7-Zip called 7-Zip ZS that includes zstd and some other algorithms and I found they performed really well for my use case, proving fairly comparable compression to alternatives at a much, much faster speed. Handy for when you want to archive a massive directory of files or a small number of really large files.
retrobox··on The Zig Programming Language
Reading through some of the examples in the documentation, I love the look of this. It really does feel easy to read.
retrobox··on Color can prevent your users from getting phished
This seems great in theory but I can’t help but think the phishing scam would evolve in to “your account has been hacked and your secret color discovered. Click here to login and set a new secret color.”

Also, let’s suppose a database of users and their associated color is compromised but that the intrusion is not immediately detected. This allows scammers to craft emails with the right color of banner leading to “but the email has the right color at the top so it can’t be a phishing scam” logic.

It may just shift the problem.

retrobox··on Amazon is selling stolen art, fake products and is infringing copyrights
I've had fake headphones (more than once) and fake software. I contacted customer services and they didn't even seem to understand why I was trying to point out all the fake products listed on the site. Needless to say, they are all still there and no action was taken.

Take a quick search for headphones by "Apple", I doubt any of these are genuinely Apple: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/s/s/ref=sr_nr_p_89_0?fst=as%3Aoff...

The problem is it's more profitable not to care about these problems.

retrobox··on Pagination Is Dead
I agree entirely with the points made in the article and add one further issue: if you end up navigating away from a feed for any reason, and use the back button to return to where you were, you often lose the place in the feed. It wastes time, can cause janky loading, and is all round just really poor UX.
