rerx··on German states and federal government agreed on nationwide 49€ ticket coming 2023
> In most places it's around 80ish for such a monthly ticket.

Sure about that? A one-month ticket just for the city of Cologne (1 Million people) is 109.70 Euros. A regular one-month ticket that would include surrounding towns as far away as Bonn (30 minutes) costs 259.30 Euros [VRS level 4]. If you want to reach Düsseldorf (40 minutes) or Aachen (50 minutes), that's 351.40 Euros [VRS level 7].

Of course it's a bit cheaper if you get a yearly pass and much cheaper if your employer chips in, but the 49 Euro ticket will be a _huge_ improvement. And NYC doesn't sound all that bad in comparison to the regular rates of today.

This is breaking news. Give it a few more minutes and better articles will appear that don't assume a readership informed about German day-to-day business.

The grim truth is that, in many regions of Germany, public transport is heavily overloaded as it is. So some discouragement is priced in.
rerx··on The sad story of Heisenberg's doctoral oral exam (1998)
Stephen Wolfram got it at age 20, in theoretical physics, from CalTech.

(OK, that's also 40+ years ago by now)

rerx··on Accidental Google Pixel Lock Screen Bypass
There is LineageOS now, https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/sargo/

The most recent Pixels get a few extra years of only security updates after regular updates run out. So at least they have improved the policy somewhat now.

It would be great if Google went ahead and fixed this problem in particular for more devices, though.

rerx··on Why is Rosetta 2 fast?
Starting with Ventura, Linux VMs can use Rosetta 2 to run x64 executables. I expect x64 Docker containers to remain relevant for quite a few years to come. Running those at reasonable speeds on Apple Silicon would be huge for developers.

rerx··on No Congress 2022: Looking forward to decentralized alternatives and Camp 2023
But there is no relation to the CCC event in Germany. That article was about news from China.
rerx··on No Congress 2022: Looking forward to decentralized alternatives and Camp 2023
https://www.bundesregierung.de/breg-de/themen/coronavirus/in...

Basically, if a state parliament identifies a "concrete danger for the functioning of the health care system", they can impose certain additional measures. For instance "hygiene concepts" for events may be required, next to obligatory mask wearing and social distancing.

rerx··on No Congress 2022: Looking forward to decentralized alternatives and Camp 2023
FFP2 / N95 masks surely massively reduce the personal risk of infection if they are fitted properly and not taken of.

rerx··on Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded to Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger
Clauser and Aspect did their experiments in the early 1970s and 1980s. That's a crazy long wait!

Wow, the short promo video brings back so many memories from Icy Tower (2001). Such a great, simple game by probably the most productive developer in the Allegro scene back then.

rerx··on From maximum force to physics in 9 lines – and implications for quantum gravity
The title of this submission is heavily editorialized.
rerx··on Netflix is in rough shape. This week will determine its future
> A goodreads for movies?

Letterboxd wants to be that, pretty much, without tying it to one specific catalogue of titles available to stream.

I think Mubi still has a lot of reviews, regardless if movies are available there or not. There it works, I think, because their offering always was understood to be much more niche than Netflix's.

rerx··on The PocketReform is a made-in-Berlin Linux handheld
I thought that the article you posted didn't really apply to the phrase "by yourself". The examples quoted there sounded much more grating to me (using "myself" as the subject of a sentence for instance).

I'm certainly not in a position to argue in favor or against the question if "by yourself" could ever be "correct" grammar in the passive voice. An easier question would be whether "you can repair it yourself" sounds cleaner than "it is repairable by yourself". And there I'd certainly agree.

rerx··on The PocketReform is a made-in-Berlin Linux handheld
I don't think the article applies to this idiom.

See for instance https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/by-your...

> by yourself

> PHRASE

> If you do something _by yourself_, you succeed in doing it without anyone helping you.

> "I didn't know if I could raise a child by myself."

Particular annoying are localized, originally English drop-down menus, where they translated the items, but did not update the alphabetical ordering. Quite confusing until you realize that you have to scroll much further than Denmark to find Germany, even though they would be next to each other in the language they are using.
rerx··on I disabled WiFi on the new Samsung fridge
Does Netflix (still) subsidize TV vendors to include their app? Or is it the case that TV vendors would not be able to sell their products if they didn't come with built-in Netflix?

I read some representative from Nvidia Shield explaining that they were forced to add a Netflix button to their remote in 2019 because Netflix would no longer allow their app to be installed on devices without a dedicated button.

Somehow I doubt the large OLED panel in my TV is cheaper than its little stand.
rerx··on Big Fat Websites (2021)
Where does the "1/18th of the book" come from?

The medium article has a "(18/52)" in the title, but that rather seems to indicate that the article is number 18 in a series of 52 (weekly book reviews in a year or so).

rerx··on John Cage Organ Project in Halberstadt
This is all concept, of course. But walking around the dishevelled old church, listening to the constant humm in the background is an experience that grows from knowing that this tone will last for years until it will change as prescribed. A tone change is a small event that draws some attention from wider circles. There are people who have cared for the project for more than 20 years and it's not only folks who initiated it. It will be fascinating to see how long there will be interest and resources to keep it up.
rerx··on Using the “Z” symbol could lead to prosecution in two German states
Note that the ban was for sales to minors (under the age of 18) not to all citizens. It also disallowed advertisement, of course, so probably there was a noticeable impact on sales. It probably didn't stop teenagers from getting the game anyhow as piracy was rampant those days and being "on the index" made it extra attractive to many.

The situation has improved a lot these days after an amendment in 2003. There is an industry board (USK) giving age recommendations (0+, 6+, 12+, 16+, 18+) and if a game has been rated 18+, shops will not sell it to minors. Importantly, if a game has been rated by this board, it can no longer be put onto the index maintained by that Federal Review Board for Media Harmful to Minors. So the far-reaching restrictions against advertisement no longer apply.

rerx··on Java Development on an Apple M1 – A One Year Review
Yeah, that statement prompted me to try Gateway. It felt a bit premature then. The initial setup is a bit more involved with Projector, which may be a good reason to direct new users to the more recent offering.
