reliablereason··on Google fires 28 workers in indiscriminate act of mass retaliation
Evil definition: adjective - profoundly immoral and wicked.

Society communally “decides” the definition of words.

reliablereason··on Google fires 28 workers in indiscriminate act of mass retaliation
A company that had “Don't be evil” as the motto.

No it is a company that removed the text “Don't be evil” from their motto.

reliablereason··on 350 tons of of chocolate and wine arrive on world’s largest cargo sailboat
Well that comparision is what we were doing here.

There are market niches for many things that target things that are impractical for various reasons. There is nothing wrong with that.

reliablereason··on 350 tons of of chocolate and wine arrive on world’s largest cargo sailboat
Modern container ships are more like 3g per ton (page 5):

https://backend.orbit.dtu.dk/ws/portalfiles/portal/158911010...

6000km from France to NY

3g * 6000km * 350tones / 1000 / 1000 = 6.3 metric tones of CO2.

I don't know how much disel the sail ship might use, but 6.4 tones of C02 is equivalent of 1974L of disel.

According to their own website https://graindesail-logistics.com/en/ they aim for 1.8 g off CO2 per km per ton.

1.8 is lower than 3g. If those aims are reached I guess they are "more green" than I thought. But the gain is quite small, if you truck that cargo for 160km all the CO2 savings are gone. A modern truck emits 45g of CO2 per km.

reliablereason··on 350 tons of of chocolate and wine arrive on world’s largest cargo sailboat
Just cause it is a sailing vessel does not mean it does not have an engine. It probably uses a couple of 100 liters of disel to get in and out of port, driving generators and heating the boat.

On top of that the sails will degrade with time and the ship will need to be repaired and there is allot more crew and manpower needed per unit of cargo.

Everything has environmental cost in CO2 emissions, and the amount of useful work you get from a large container ship per amount CO2 emissions is insane. The only thing that can get you those kinds of numbers is scale.

reliablereason··on 350 tons of of chocolate and wine arrive on world’s largest cargo sailboat
Its not actually more eco friendly than placing the cargo on a container ship.

The fuel cost for moving one container over the Atlantic on a big container ship is about 30$. A container takes 30 tons. So 12 containers could move that cargo for a fuel cost of 360$, the scale is unbeatable; both economically and environmentally.

Things like this can only ever be a type of artistic thing rather than used for real shipping.

reliablereason··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
No, with the top reason as to why not being that Maersk did not construct the ship.

Saying that Maersk is at blame is like blaming the airline instead of Boeing.. if you want to make that parallel.

On the bridge of the ship one would imagine.

reliablereason··on 95% of container ships are now going around the Southern Tip of Africa
A projection that is better at showing the comparative difference in length between going through the Suez canal vs going around.

The mercator makes Africa look comparatively small on the y-axis which is a problem if you are trying to visualise the size of Africa and the time it takes to go around the continent.

If i visually compare the distance on the mercator and an equal area projection is looks to make the trip about 20% shorter on mercator (compared to the apparent visual distance going through Suez). Non of the projections will be 100% accurate but the mercator is less accurate for this specific case.

reliablereason··on 95% of container ships are now going around the Southern Tip of Africa
That is a terrible use of the Mercator projection.

The extra distance around Africa looks comparatively small on the Mercator projection.

reliablereason··on Apple Vision Pro available in the U.S. on February 2
It will be successful, but Apple won't sell as many units as Meta did with the "quest 2 or 3".

It will be successful in the price range where it is located. My guess is that it will even beat the sales quantities of the quest pro, a headset which is about a third of the price.

reliablereason··on SQL as API
If you need row level security for some tables you can also solve that with views that are made with the appropriate rows.

QoS could be a problem, indeed. If QoS it is an issue in the case one is working on, exposing your data as SQL might not be best choice, and neither is exposing any type of api that causes the server to have to do hard work.

For small applications with a hundred to a few hundred users using the databases own user management is quite handy. You can be very sure that you don't leek information and you can be quite certain that potential bugs in your application code won't lead to many of the common security vulnerability's that exist.

reliablereason··on Men should abstain from drinking at least three months prior to conceiving
I would say that 3-4 beers several times a week is allot of alcohol.

It is an amount where I would definitely start to think that ones life would be degraded in certain ways by the amount of alcohol consumed.

Where I live the recommendations are that people that drink 10 or more units of alcohol per week should be provided support from the healthcare system to reduce their drinking.

reliablereason··on Left-sided Cancer: Blame your bed and TV? (2010)
A note on why people tend to sleep on the right.

People likely sleep on the side that causes least muscular tension in their body.

People tend to have a pelvis that is turned slightly to the left (something referred to as the "left aic, right bc pattern") this due to a combination of factors stemming from internal asymmetry, like the liver giving support to the diaphragm on one side, which effects how we use our muscles to breathe. With time many of our movement patterns become slightly asymmetric to make breathing more efficient.

This asymmetry is likely the main contributing factor in the dominance of right side sleeping.

The power consumption of the navigation electronics is probably not a big concern.

I would have put linux and a fullscreen electron app on those screens.

reliablereason··on Towards a Logical Definition of Emergence [video]
You are making straw-man arguments, where you assume that your interpretation of my text is what I meant.

I could have been more detailed in my comment, but that was not where my mind where when I wrote my comment. And in my defense the only part of your comment that I really understand thoroughly is the last paragraph, so I guess this holds true for both of us, we could both be more descriptive.

reliablereason··on Towards a Logical Definition of Emergence [video]
In this case you "observed" the anthill by writing about and describing it.

Things emerge in to something. In this case it emerged in to models of the world that exist in mine and your mind.

The pattern that was the anthill exists, but it has not emerged in to something before it has emerged in to a model of something.

So I guess it goes wrong cause we use different definitions for what it means for something to emerge.

On a side note. I am not quite sure what you mean with "a fact of nature", my best guess is something like: it is an axiom of truth that anthills exist. But that does not make sense to me. Maybe it is more like: we observe anthills so they must exist. Idk? Probably not relevant, seams more like you are refuting some postmodern idealistic idea which states that everything is mind, which I don’t subscribe to.

reliablereason··on Towards a Logical Definition of Emergence [video]
Yeah, seams like you and I agree.

Even if I would not say that "A chair doesn't really exist". But it seams like that was more like a rhetorical argument from you given your last paragraph.

reliablereason··on Towards a Logical Definition of Emergence [video]
Emergence is simply repeating patterns observed in aggregates.

There is nothing that "emerges" in the physical universe, instead things emerge in an observer's model of the world.

reliablereason··on Panama Canal is so congested that one ship owner paid $4M to skip the line
It would require about 14 MWh to lift a single ship to the upper level

Calculating the approximate wattage to lift all that water 26m:

9.8 w/s * 200000000 Liters * 26 m /60/60/1000/1000

200 000 000 liters was reported on wikipedia as amount of water used.

Its a very crude calculation probably of by quite a bit.

It's allot of electricity but the cost of that electricity would be essentially nothing when compared to what they charge. So I don't know why they don't install massive pumps. Maybe they don't want to contaminate the lake with salt water, but you would get small amounts of salt water with the current system to.

reliablereason··on The Humane AI Pin Launches Its Campaign to Replace Phones
Yeah I was thinking on similar lines when it comes to food tracking. I did a study last year on how food consumption correlates with certain psychological features, but the lack of good data made the study very hard to do.

Self reported data is always annoyingly unreliable.

This product would probably be better than self reporting, but not good enough.

The privacy issue is annoying thing. If it was a on-device ai model things might be easier to accept. But I such a device is further in to the future.

reliablereason··on Omegle 2009-2023
The chance of a small glitch or anything that did not happen in the past is as likely as a ghost dinosaur coming up to you and scamming you out of all your money.

Looking at the past through a probabilistic lens is irrational, unless you are doing it to predict the future through information collection.

Sort of, of topic but anyway….
