reddozen··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
> if you really know what to do

The so called "load-bearing gap" you pay experts for.

reddozen··on Copyright does more harm than good and should be abolished
China couldn't even allocate resources to major medical problems like COVID-19. All sinovax types are significantly less effective than the western counterparts. And the sinovax therapies were a lot less sophisticated (no mRNA) because they couldn't swiftly allocate capital like the free market can. Yes, this is including the "sinovax is more well tuned to Asians" lie.
reddozen··on Suspension of the de minimis administrative exemption for imports $800 or less
> I can say that we absolutely pay tariffs to the US government in place of our customers who should be paying it

To be ultra pedantic, you're paying American import tariffs to the American shipping carrier or American broker not CBP itself.

> refunds for it like Americans supposedly did

No one's getting those refunds, if they do get a portion back and not at the rate at which they increased prices on American consumers.

But more to your point, you can certainly pay American import tariffs on behalf of Americans, but your response is to raise prices on American consumers commensurate to the tariffs you're paying. Your margins are necessarily lower to sell to Americans, so you must raise prices for American consumers.

If your margins were high enough that you can absorb American import tariffs, then you're lucky the market hadn't provided a relevant market substitute.

reddozen··on Suspension of the de minimis administrative exemption for imports $800 or less
> I don’t know what you’re saying

And that's the problem. It doesn't get much more simple than "Canadians pay Canadian import taxes" and "Americans pay American import taxes". Can you at least recognize that reality? For any country, its own people pay its tariffs.

> required consumers to pay new duties.

Required American consumers to pay new American levied duties.

reddozen··on Suspension of the de minimis administrative exemption for imports $800 or less
Your comment is nonsense.

Canadian pharmacies pay Canadian tariffs. Americans pay American tariffs. American importers are no longer exempted from paying American tariffs applied by the US government for goods de minimis goods they import from Canada.

This post is about American importers no longer having exemption on tariffs they would have otherwise paid to the US government.

At no point has Canadian pharmacies ever paid American tariffs. This is fiction you invented.

It's not only Hollywood, these ML tankies that want to abolish private ownership will destroy pharmaceutical innovation. (This is where people's brains will turn off)

Why would a firm invest in research improving Super-Rare-Disease therapies if I don't get exclusive rights to the monetary benefit?

And to the inevitable room temperature IQ DSA crowd, why would the ML government with state research firms ever direct public resources to improving Super-Rare-Disease? Something that affects 1-in-10000 people doesn't deserve public resources like common diseases.

reddozen··on True Rate of Unemployment
There is no revelation. The authors are intentionally misleading you by comparing 2 different metrics to pretend their formula is meaningfully different than what BLS provides.

"Headline" unemployment rate is U-3 unemployment. If they compared "TRU" to it's analogous match U-6 the graph would be less striking as it's a 1:1 match.

reddozen··on Why is Anthropic's public writing style so unlike Claude's?
This is where the concern-trolls barge in with "what about non native English speakers using AI to blogslop everything is actually a good tool!"
reddozen··on The Sloppification of Peptides
I always wonder why this comment chain exists in every thread about LLMs uniquely harming our sphere of information.

Yes, <bad code, fake pictures, security vulnerabilities, malicious actors> existed before LLMs. No one is saying otherwise.

reddozen··on What happens when an LLM never sees material beyond fifth grade?
> but like to have a subjective reason not to do something

You're asking a lot from extremely fancy auto complete...

reddozen··on Docker Sandboxes – Disposable, isolated sandboxes for AI agents
> why put in effort doing something people don't expect or ask for?

True! Why did we bother with devcontainers anyway? Who asked for permissions on tool calls? Only those weird security people care about putting whats effectively a CNC rootkit inside a sandbox. Its not about seriously protecting the user against our AI slop inevitably typing `rm -rf work /` and deleting their entire drive.

reddozen··on Docker Sandboxes – Disposable, isolated sandboxes for AI agents
If any AI company was doing serious engineering isolated containers would have been a prerequisite to using their tools.
reddozen··on Iowa-led states ask OpenAI to keep their bots on a leash
No. You didn't address in other replies. This is a lie. Just don't lie.
reddozen··on The applause that disrupted nothing – yet still led to an arrest
No. The problem is crap states with uneducated populace. The "small government" argument falls apart quicker than the ultra libertarian arguments.

Or actually you're right I should as an American citizen have to be versed in all the random arcane laws each individual state..no. Each individual COUNTY has instead of a common shared American values. God forbid someone play dominoes on Sunday in Alabama.

The problem is the fragmented states where they can hide their corruption.

reddozen··on Iowa-led states ask OpenAI to keep their bots on a leash
So OP asked you for one example and you can't give one? You just fall back to the generic statement slop, you must be a bot right?

Again, what's ONE (1) real world example of "SSN/PII" being illegally exposed that wasn't investigated or prosecuted.

reddozen··on Iowa-led states ask OpenAI to keep their bots on a leash
> there are WAY worse cases than these models breaking out that have nothing to do with AI.

And? Welcome to the big boy world. This isn't playground rules where you can complain "But Bobby was doing bad things too why isn't he in trouble?"

But you know this already. You're just pretending not to. Why?

reddozen··on The applause that disrupted nothing – yet still led to an arrest
Reminder that at every level of government your vote is less powerful than someone in some crappy flyover backwater Kansas.

They get more per Capita representation in the House, and electoral college.

reddozen··on What does GitHub's security team even do?
> in the form of negative revenue pressure

Is this happening? GitHub status page is a Christmas tree for 3 quarters and comically had an incident 10 minutes after the "we're working hard on fixing stability!" blog post published.

The free market has responded by buying GitHub Enterprise to avoid the incidents. So we've effectively rewarded GitHub's lack of serious engineering with more money. Doesn't seem like they have any real pressure to improve.

reddozen··on Pebble Mega Update – July 2026
I don't know why HN is obsessed with whatever this product is (literally never heard of it) but I'm getting strong juicero vibes. Is this all botted up votes hoping for more VC slop or...?
reddozen··on Under federal rule, colleges must leave grads better off or lose financial aid
This has to just be an IQ gap or something. Is it actually impossible for you to view agreements from different perspectives?

From the individuals' perspective, overusing uncollateralized debt to be discharged is a good deal. That loss is offset by the creditor by issuing higher interest to unsecured credit lines because people can default on their debts. From the creditor's perspective, it's risk adjusted for people who default.

It just logically follows. I can't help you understand past this.

reddozen··on Under federal rule, colleges must leave grads better off or lose financial aid
Ok. And the interest on unsecured debts like credit cards are like 25%. Sounds like the risk is properly priced in. What's your point?
reddozen··on We Mapped Rural Data Center Development – and Opposition
Why doesn't Amazon buy a county similar to what Walt Disney did in Florida.
reddozen··on The bottleneck might be the air in the room
CO2 and all other air quality indexers have to be very carefully calibrated regularly. It's not some slop you can just throw into a consoomer cheap iot device.

Article author completely ignores this for the obvious reasons.

reddozen··on Claude Desktop spins up a VM without no way of stopping it
Ok. Apparently you missed the question from OP.

What are you comparing to?

reddozen··on Facebook is paying people overseas promoting Alberta separatism
Free speech absolutists just don't defend their position because it devolves into absurdity immediately. It's just a dogwhistle of the far right or people that haven't put any thought into their beliefs.
reddozen··on When AI Builds Itself: Our progress toward recursive self-improvement
> Do code harnesses that build themselves count as recursive self improvement, or does it need to be the AI itself to qualify for the term?

Shhh just let the marketing slop wash over you.

reddozen··on U.S. midterms have a cyber problem, but it's not at the ballot box
> I don't vote because I am uneducated enough in local politics to do so I would only be corrupting the vote and dilluting votes that are that of people who did their research.

I'm going to tell you a secret it doesn't tell you on the ballot: You don't have to fill in all the bubbles like you're being graded in middle school. You can chose to only vote for things you are opinionated on.

Just kidding, every ballot already explains this. Next time just admit you're lazy to cast a ballot and lead with that. Its the same outcome, no reason for anyone to read the next 10 paragraphs.

reddozen··on U.S. midterms have a cyber problem, but it's not at the ballot box
Maybe, in general. But in the realm of American democracy, the literal discussion at hand, their actions mean their voice matters absolutely none.
