recalibrator··on Show HN: SuperTrip
Promising idea. I like it. Does this work with any city, or is it just select cities?
recalibrator··on The best and worst times to have your case reviewed by a judge
I read this several years ago and it left a lasting impression on me. If I need agreement from someone, I try to get it shortly after lunch.

Job searchers and freelance workers looking to land work, take heed.

recalibrator··on Hard Science About Diet
Don't get me wrong. Exercise is good. But from personal experience and the advice of very smart people, diet is at least 80 percent of losing body fat.

Even in Taub's book "Why We Get Fat", he lays the blame squarely on eating highly-refined carbohydrates.

recalibrator··on Choose Firefox Now, Or Later You Won't Get A Choice
Developers, please stop making add-ons and extensions for Google products. You accelerate Google's domination and vendor lock-in when you do.
recalibrator··on Starbucks to Revise Policies to End Irregular Schedules for Its 130,000 Baristas
The last line of the article is heart-rending: “I want to surprise everyone,” she said, “because no one is expecting anything of me.”

I have no doubt she will.

recalibrator··on What Kind of Logo Do You Get for $5?
The three are: Pet Florist, Privacy Enforcer and the StartJumper logo (so it was a bit of a trick question).

Good answers by the way. I probably would have guessed the same.

recalibrator··on What Kind of Logo Do You Get for $5?
I used Fiverr to design logos for most of the "future-proof" business ideas at StartJumper: http://startjumper.com (a side project of mine).

There are three that were "professionally" designed and not by Fiverr. Can you tell which ones?

recalibrator··on AI, Robotics, and the Future of Jobs
This question intrigued me, so did some research and started designing "future-proof" business plans and brands that people can use right away.

It's still a work in progress, but it's here if anyone wants a look: http://startjumper.com.

recalibrator··on I have a soul-crushing job and I don't know what to do
Arrange it so that the most optimal part of your day is for your personal projects. Your employer can have whatever energy and focus is remaining.
recalibrator··on University of Wisconsin to reprise controversial monkey studies
If your day-to-day job consists of inflicting harm on animals, you should be tested for psychopathic tendencies. It should be mandatory.
recalibrator··on University of Wisconsin to reprise controversial monkey studies
Ethical concerns should trump all. How and why are the two most important questions when conducting research.

And besides, animal suffering matters to many people, often more than the answer itself matters.

recalibrator··on Please Give Edward Snowden His Medal of Freedom Already
Thanking isn't enough. People need to go to the mat for Snowden. It would be our privilege.
recalibrator··on It takes more than practice to excel
I assumed practice meant deliberate practice. Why should it not? How can you say it wasn't?
recalibrator··on The Suburbs Will Die: One Man's Fight to Fix the American Dream
The only ones who truly profit from urban sprawl are land developers. They wipe out forests and wildlife to make a quick buck on cheap low-density housing.

The taxpayer foots the bill to have the grid and city services extended for these suburbs.

So the taxpayer loses, nature loses, and the losers who bought these ugly disposable houses are losers. Only the land developers profit.

recalibrator··on 35% of Americans Facing Debt Collectors
We are experiencing the symptoms now; the ratcheting up of stress, mental illness, suicide and homelessness. And it will get worse.

I'm friends with a cop who has worked in downtown Toronto for over 20 years. He says suicide is "big right now, bigger than you think."

recalibrator··on Show HN: Blackline – The Bike of The Future
Curious what the sticker price is for the MNML model.
recalibrator··on Uber vs. Car Ownership
Sam. You own a Tesla Roadster, a car for people who don't have to niggle over money.

Most people a) don't live in SF b) have your money c) have access to Uber and d) have a Tesla Roadster.

You're essentially talking to yourself and a few choice friends who live in the same bubble as you.

recalibrator··on Another Xiaomi Shocker
I don't have anything against the beautiful Chinese people or their culture. I was just stating what I see as a well-known fact.
recalibrator··on Black Swan Seed Rounds
That's the heroic narrative used by investors like Sam, but I don't believe it.
recalibrator··on Black Swan Seed Rounds
I recall Stripe was being positioned as a PayPal alternative to collecting international funds, but that wasn't the point.

My point is there is no black swan here. Far from it. It makes no sense in this context.

recalibrator··on Black Swan Seed Rounds
Teespring and Zenefits I've never even heard of until today. Are they rolling in the bank and disrupting their respective industries?

And Stripe, there was huge pent-up demand for a PayPal alternative before they came on the scene. How could anyone say that was a "black swan" bet? It doesn't make sense.

recalibrator··on For Coconut Waters, a Street Fight for Shelf Space
Who are these pathological downvoters on HN? I wish there was a way to out them.

Many just need a hug and some emotional counselling.

recalibrator··on Another Xiaomi Shocker
Exactly. The Chinese refuse to acknowledge intellectual property. It seems embedded in their culture.
recalibrator··on How I ended up conducting successful tech interviews with just 1 question
TL;DR Please tell me about the best project that you’ve ever created
recalibrator··on GCC 4.9 is doing “some seriously crazy shit” according to Linus Torvalds
Good point. Bears are being forced into close proximity with humans due to urban sprawl. Their existence is threatened daily.

Look too closely and the analogy breaks.

recalibrator··on GCC 4.9 is doing “some seriously crazy shit” according to Linus Torvalds
Linus is just being Linus. I've been following him since Red Hat 5.2 and the open source culture has always been "colourful".

His words shouldn't be taken too personally, just as getting bitten by a grizzly bear shouldn't be taken personal.

recalibrator··on Stephen King, John Grisham, 900 other authors oppose Amazon's Hachette tactics
Having personally experienced nothing but excellent service from Amazon, I'm inclined to think Bezos does have the customers best interest at heart.
recalibrator··on Mistakes You Should Never Make
I've done it when I incorporated my consulting business. I didn't know how to do my own payroll.

Hey, it happens, oh ye wise and holy one!
