Just an old guy.

ratsmack··on [dead]
The US government forcing the banks to be the money police puts everyone under the microscope, and that's just not right. I shouldn't have to worry about transferring money that may flag some kind of investigation, which has happened to many innocent people.
ratsmack··on Economic Effects of State Bans on Direct Manufacturer Sales to Car Buyers [pdf]
I hope I can live long enough to see dealers eliminated from the car trade.
ratsmack··on Credit Card Points Are Being Paid for by the Poor
Yes, it is true that people paying with debit and cash get to fund the CC point programs. And how is that, you ask?... It's because the merchant raises prices slightly to cover the higher transaction fees of which a portion goes to fund the point programs (scam) that the CC companies run. Generally, poorer people pay with cash and debit cards.

I might mention that the point programs are just the modern day rebates, but just applied across all purchased items, instead of a select few.

ratsmack··on Stripe live dashboard
Running Firefox 115.4.0esr here and there is no problem, you may be running a different version (debian testing). My four core cpu is at 23%, even with thinkorswim running.
ratsmack··on OpenAI Tried to Fire Sam Altman as CEO. It Only Made Him Stronger
The way people are going on about old Sam, you would think he was a super hero.
ratsmack··on Snaps. Why? Please Stop
Hear! hear!... and I will stick with Debian as long as the do not embrace said OS blasphemy.
ratsmack··on The story of titanium
A little info in the subject.

ratsmack··on What is meant by AI "safety"?
AI safety is making sure it doesn't answer or comment on any of the societal taboos. In addition, it is coerced to be politically aligned with the people training it.
ratsmack··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
Sounds like a CYA move after being under pressure from the team at large.
ratsmack··on OpenAI's Murati Aims to Re-Hire Altman, Brockman After Exits
It will make a great movie though.
ratsmack··on Why doesn't Windows have an "expert mode"? (2003)
And over time, it becomes a huge garbage dump that slowly degrades the performance of the computer.
ratsmack··on Chaos in Spain after payment card network crash
> So far the blockchain has used up a bunch of resources

One has to wonder how much waste heat has been produced, plus the associated carbon release from non renewable sources of electricity.

ratsmack··on Chaos in Spain after payment card network crash
>... decentralized blockchain networks are the future of payments.

That won't help if physical access is through a common or shared infrastructure that gets shut down from a hardware failure or line cut. Having a local system that queues transactions for processing after things comes back online would make more sense.

ratsmack··on Cats are no match for New York City's rats (2018)
They train mink to kill rats shown here[1], but the NY rats may be a larger variety.

ratsmack··on Apple to pause advertising on X after Musk backs antisemitic post
>Antisemitic incidents in the United States reached a record high in 2022, according to the ADL.

Is the ADL the de facto authority on determining what verbiage is a slight against Jewish people?

ratsmack··on Jury clears climate protesters of causing damage to HSBC London HQ
> “Although the defendants accept they caused the damage, they deny that their actions amount to criminal conduct. Simply put, the damage was caused during a protest and the defendants say that they were lawfully justified in doing what they did."

This is sheer insanity. I hope HSBC has an avenue for further litigation.

ratsmack··on Elon Musk agrees with tweet accusing Jews of 'hatred against whites'
It's funny how certain subjects are deemed taboo and pearl-clutching ensues whenever they are mentioned.
ratsmack··on Walmart, Costco and other companies rethink self-checkout
Self checkout and kiosks in fast food is the best thing that ever happened. I'm 70yo and don't hear well and it is always a difficult chore to carry on a conversation with any sales attendant. I also don't feel rushed and can review things before pushing the final pay button, so I say we need more of them.
ratsmack··on Hackers know everything is securities fraud
That's just one more vector for targeted spam and illicit data collection. I prefer to keep my exposure to a minimum.
ratsmack··on Hackers know everything is securities fraud
Yes... this has been a problem for a while now for a lot of people.
ratsmack··on X being 'overrun by trolls and lunatics' after Musk takeover Founder
I see no difference from before and after the sale of Twitter (now X).
ratsmack··on Hacking Google Bard – From Prompt Injection to Data Exfiltration
I have nothing against Google, but I enjoy watching so many people hyperventilating over the wonders of "AI" when it's just poorly simulated intelligence at best. I believe it will improve over time, but the current methods employed are nothing but brute force guessing at what a proper response should be.
ratsmack··on Microsoft Temporarily Blocked Internal Access to ChatGPT, Citing Data Concerns
>... "bad" sites to optionally block

I wonder what criteria they employ to determine how "bad" a site is.

ratsmack··on Gnome Receives €1M from German Government
KDE receives a lot of money from commercial interests, Gnome not so much.
ratsmack··on [dead]
>intellectual safety

That isn't what it means. It implies that you have no right to be protected from speech you don't want to hear, as long as it is outside the realm of stalking, harassment and defamation. Therefore you can turn away or plug your ears, but you have no right to expect the government to censor the speech you don't like.

ratsmack··on Steam Deck OLED
>This item is not available in your country

I'm in the US, so that seems kinda strange.

ratsmack··on Nokia sues Amazon, HP over video compression technology
The hallmarks of a dying company... attempting to sue everyone until you become profitable. It worked out pretty well for SCO.
ratsmack··on Encrypted traffic interception on Hetzner and Linode targeting Jabber service
It seems that trust is a highly variable quantity, maybe similar to intuition.
ratsmack··on Finland to vote against the EU mass surveillance and encryption ban directive
This has already happened several times in the US. People have been put in jail until they disclose the password for their phone or encrypted data.

Here is a list of countries compelled to reveal passwords to encrypted data by laws in force.

ratsmack··on Israel's demand for Gaza evacuation will lead to deaths, experts warn
I can somewhat empathize with the Jews, as this recent attack is just one of many.

https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/comprehensive-listing-o...

It's just a bad situation all the way around.
