rapnie··on Replacing the old battery on rechargeable bike lights
> The old-school dynamos

I recently bought a dynamo from what should be a good brand (dunno the name off the top of my head). Cost about 45 Euro's, not cheap. Just after a couple weeks, whenever I cycle through the rain my dynamo wheel would slip and I'd be fully without light. I thought it was not properly pressing the rubber of the tire. But I found that the wheel was just cheap plastic garbage, totally worn flat already. I guess capitalism flew by, enshittifying once more what was once good.

The old-school dynamo's were undestroyable iron casings, with an iron wheel with deep grooves. Now I am looking if I can find one of those again, to last me a lifetime.

rapnie··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
I wonder. Had any privatisation in NL any net benefits for the population? Not talking shareholder revenues.
rapnie··on EU Floats Canada Becoming the Bloc's First 'Associate Member'
> Tough words, that's the worse we may expect from the US gov realistically.

Trade wars and sanctions can get very nasty too. I don't know about Canada, but most of the EU runs on US Big Tech to name just one sensitive sector.

rapnie··on EU Floats Canada Becoming the Bloc's First 'Associate Member'
The context in the podcast was that EU was too picky in their reform criteria for inclusion for current candidates on the European continent, but that Canada as a modern country would sail past and pass the exam. The ease with which these experts concluded it would make sense for Canada to join struck me, because impact on geopolitical relationship with US was imho too easily overlooked. It is a sentiment I hear more often now, in the news.
rapnie··on EU Floats Canada Becoming the Bloc's First 'Associate Member'
The other day in a Dutch geopolitics podcast (Boekestijn en de Wijk) it was mentioned that if there's one country that could be added to the EU "at the stroke of a pen", it would be Canada. In terms of state of the democracy, shared values, etc. And I agree with that perspective. But at the same time I thought that if there's one way to get into conflict with the current US administration - who declared EU their only adversary in the US National Security Plan - this is it. It would be like a mirror image of Russia feeling encroached by NATO, but then in the Western hemisphere. And perhaps a red cloth invitation to the frothing bull(ies) of the Trump administration to invade their neighbor.
rapnie··on Git hosting that never leaves Europe
So often when something launches, these are missing. And it always really surprises me. People apparently just sign up for such services, but I would want to know these details in advance before doing so.
rapnie··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
Trust and trustworthiness. Trust is very hard to win back, once its gone. Trustworthiness makes you willing to rely on a partner. Trustworthiness only builds very slowly over prolonged periods of time, by consistently not betraying ones trust.

Some nice Object Capability technologies not mentioned in the Wikipedia article:

rapnie··on Just Bury Your Trash
In the Netherlands the cradle to cradle hype of some years ago has created a paper reality where waste is turned magically into building material and can thus be effectively dumped anywhere in the environment.
rapnie··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
Nice saying. If in the prediction "given [intricate analysis] the whole [shebang] goes [bust] at [date]", only the [date] turns out to be wrong, I'd say it is still a valuable prediction however, though it was wrong.
rapnie··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link

rapnie··on How much of HN is AI?
Matrix works fine for the friend to friend, small community things. Discourse forums too. Use Signal for family and friends, perhaps work. Fediverse and Atmosphere (Bluesky) for your microblog needs, and RSS to keep track of blogs.
rapnie··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
I think in the Netherlands the general rule is to tip up to 10% depending how good the service was, unless it was excellent and you go higher. When drinking a couple coffees in a restaurant it is okay to tip with a single Euro for good service, even if that doesn't amount to 10%.

rapnie··on Air Theremin – A browser theremin you play by waving at your webcam
The general tendency among people is to go along with what's thrown to them, in a Symphony of Destruction, Megadeath

    [Refrain]
    You take a mortal man
    And put him in control
    Watch him become a God
    Watch people's heads a-roll

    A-roll
    A-roll

    [Chorus]
    Just like the Pied Piper
    Led rats through the streets
    We dance like marionettes
Swaying to the symphony of destruction
rapnie··on Are We Living in a Simulation
> So you'd be the guy who take the blue pile? (CF Matrix)

No, that is different. I am talking if it matters before Morpheus shows up with his pills (btw, there's also the option that you take no pill from a complete stranger, neither a blue nor a red one).

And if its proven, it depends on how abstract and theoretical it all is. Anyway, Permutation City [0] by Greg Egan might be a nice read for you.

rapnie··on Meta Files Patent for Facial Recognition, Automatic Recording of People
Anecdotal but I hear quite a few people talk negative about Ray-Ban related to the backlash. They are the "pervert glasses" brand now. I think there definitely is reputation damage. Also the "banray" [0] campaign for my country is doing well I think (I regularly see their stickers), and this name reversal may also harm the brand if it sticks.

rapnie··on The Gargantuan Lie That Is Collapsing the Climate
> It's not at all about individual action. This scale of problem requires policy intervention and investment at national levels, and inter-governmental coordination internationally.

It is all about individual action. And then the emergence from that to what amounts to the multi-pronged solutions that are needed to address a wicked problem. Like create the "big meaningful wins" you mention. There is no mailbox where you drop off "stop the use of coal", and it happens, neither is there a magic button. A complicating factor is that we are not able to see how our small individual actions contribute to solving the wicked problems, and we are not able to coordinate them at scale.

It is a pity that, while their focus is on openness and accessiblity, neither Flora Incognita, nor iNaturalist or PlantNet can be installed from the F-Droid appstore. I unfortunately don't use Google Play, so can't testdrive them.

rapnie··on Mondragon Corporation – a federation of co-operatives
>> Capitalism is ... OTOH socialism ...

> No, socialism is not ... and capitalism is ...

I often wonder if these classifications have long outlived their usefulness, and only lead to endless, often heated, ideological discussions about their definition. To the extent that those benefiting most from observably-broken-form-of-global-capitalism can use that as a tool to sow division and strife and ensure nothing changes. The gist of your and parent's comment is the interesting bit, where new systems and mechanisms are discussed.

rapnie··on Codeberg: ToU extension to prohibit LLM-extrusions
Yes, forking is one of the beautiful things of open source. But again there is much more than just "riding the works" in the tight mutual relationship between Forgejo and Codeberg.
