rand846633··on Chechnya bans music outside the range of 80-116 beats per minute
Sounds so outlandish, but then this comes to mind how the UK tried to ban raves:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criminal_Justice_and_Public_...

> Sections 63, 64 & 65 of the Act targeted electronic dance music played at raves. The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act empowered police to stop a rave in the open air when "ten or more people are attending, or where two or more are making preparations for a rave". Section 65 allowed any uniformed constable who believes a person is on their way to a rave within a 5-mile (8.0 km) radius to stop them and direct them away from the area; "non-compliant citizens may be subject to a maximum fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale (£1000)"

Can anyone explain what the deal is with that Us department of state foreign affairs policy board?

rand846633··on Why Top Athletes Don't Look Like Fitness Influencers (Usually)
… because influencers also don’t “look like influencers” if you don’t do proper lighting and posing plus a bit of photo/video shop... additionally, only take pictures and video footage after hungering periods, then use the picture material over the next few month..

Can someone who knows more about the practical aspects of shorting stoks as an individual investor opine on how one would try to profit from Hindenburgs reports? (Let’s say if one can aford to loose 100k)

I am aware of the risks of shorting and have no inclination to do so. I’d just like to hear the considerations of someone well versed in this kind of activities.

Time for a new employment opportunity.

rand846633··on TinySSH is a small SSH server using NaCl, TweetNaCl
What are the best options to solve this problem? It’s a hard problem imho for most threat models.

If the booting machine has been compromised and i use my usb connected keyboard to enter the full disk encryption key I would run into the exact same issues, no?

Cool project! There are many use cases where this is a good tool! Allways great to have another alternative to some other great tools.

rand846633··on The Dangerous Populist Science of Yuval Noah Harari
The article is quite bold in its claim. Had to Stop reading, when after a few paragraphs the article still had not disputed any facts of Yuval’s book, but was bluntly calling them a fraud. Kinda strange way of trying to discredit someone.

rand846633··on Quality is a hard sell in big tech
Sounds more like a pet hypothesis in the brain than an elephant in the room.

Virtue signaling is as old as humans. The virtues might change, the phenomenon stays.

Nothing about companies trying to appeal their audience is new. What though could be new is that you are becoming older and thereby, statistically more conservative, thereby falling out of the approximated audiences taste profile for which virtues to optimize for..

rand846633··on The worst users come from referral programs, free trials, coupons
If 1,000 games can be translated to many, then multimillionaire can be translated to “at least many thousand dollars in net worth”?

The point for criticism of unlikely claims online is that it is hard to know if made up, thereby kinda dubious as an justification for an acclaim of authority on a specific topic..

rand846633··on 'I should not have written 'A Clockwork Orange''
Super interesting detail and kind wild and questionable that an authors work would be substantially changed by an editor.

I’d love to hear some anecdotal stuff. Not having dealt with either hr or hiring managers in years I miss enjoying the shenanigans, cringe and stupidity!

New amazing web security research by James Kettle:

Smashing the state machine: the true potential of web race conditions

The talk (on YouTube) is also absolutely brilliantly done.

James finds new vulnerabilities classes where others don’t even see potential for problems. Absolutely amazing!

rand846633··on Tesla strike widens as Swedish union expands blockade
Reality shows that is overall good for the country, Sweden! It is purely not necessary for big corporations to be in the position to exploit workers.

Nothing about this situation describes a monopoly. Every single individual worker has the choice to bust the union; they just prefer not to.
