ralphael··on Renovating a vibe-coded app: the code was readable, the reasoning was gone
disagree, I think however it was written, it conveys some interesting thoughts on the gap between User AI generated MVP apps and the process of making them production ready.
ralphael··on I think Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit
this - I'm wondering why this isn't getting picked up more in the analysis? Its an accounting trick, which is not sustainable. Time will tell.
ralphael··on Observability 2.0 and the Database for It
Thanks to all who commented, I learnt a lot from just reading the comments.
ralphael··on SimCity 4 was released 20 years ago
I love SimCity, never forget the first time I played it on an Amiga 500.

Then one day my friend lent me his 512KB ram upgrade and it was a different game :-)

ralphael··on Grasshopper – An open-source Python library for load testing
I love locust.io and looking at the features that this adds, I look forward to adding it to my toolbox.
ralphael··on Meta plans to cut thousands of jobs, after CEO predicted no more layoffs
It actually produces the exact opposite, my observation from experience is:

Some people will now work the system and want to be made redundant, by doing the minimum possible.

Good people will leave for other opportunities.

This takes months/years to fix/heal. The fixing process is reset every time you do a new round of lay offs.

ralphael··on My network home setup – v4.0
Anyone who uses Grafana to monitor their home setup, thats +1 from me.

Appreciate the commitment and dedication to detail.

ralphael··on Modeling and Analyzing Lambda vs. Fargate Breakeven
Really appreciate this! great food for thought and highlights the answer is often ... "it depends!" :-)
ralphael··on Someone is pretending to be me
highly recommend that podcast too!
ralphael··on I spent two years trying to do what Backstage does for free
No need to apologise, a polite "I ran X which solves Y" related to the post is encouraged. Helps the rest of us learn about other solutions out there :-)

Will checkout OpenContext, thanks for the link

ralphael··on Ask HN: Anyone having issues with job applicant fraud?
I've found that candidates have little or non appetite for take home problems.

If they are busy interviewing, putting aside 2-3 hours (which is not much really) per interview, limits how many they are willing to do per week. As its still a candidate driven market.

Keep in mind, people have to find the spare time while doing their jobs and living life. If they have a family - good luck finding spare time :-)

The best win/win I've found is to pair with someone for about 30 minutes. You help each other, just like you do in real life.

ralphael··on Email Is Async
Its called "Instant Messaging" :-) So I think the expectation is built into the name, even if you don't agree.
ralphael··on Hard to work with
"Success is finding a path forward among the options that actually exist."

..just so simple and elegant, particularly given the rise in hindsight and purely principle focussed cultures, that are developing in tech.

ralphael··on Show HN: Open-source UK fuel availability tracker
...actually, its people who did not fill up last week and now have no choice.
ralphael··on Snowden Dunks on 'The Get-Rich-Quick Real Estate Investing Conference
Coffeezilla does a great job at exposing these scams too: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFQMnBA3CS502aghlcr0_aw
ralphael··on Missing Covid-19 test data was caused by the ill-thought-out use of Excel
..this right here. No error checking, inadequate testing, no reconciliation process.

Excel is used extensively in many industries. Any file could be cut off in processing by any number of reasons, one off errors for e.g.

So the solution is to "fix" the process by using the existing broken process and smaller files....

ralphael··on Ask HN: What RSS Reader do you use?
love this product, looking to purchase a subscription to ensure it stays around
ralphael··on When you browse Instagram and find Tony Abbott's passport number
I couldn't stop laughing.

His skills at hacking are only matched by his wit at writing.

ralphael··on Show HN: Clouddraw – draw cloud architecture diagrams with ease
http://draw.io
ralphael··on Why Write ADRs
so what would the experience be for someone new joining the project, particular if you have many repositories? having to search across numerous repositories? In practice I've found this (source control commit messages as ADR's) doesn't work. Unless I have mistaken what you have said? I just keep a repository for ADR's, which can then be published to a wiki or else where.
ralphael··on Del.icio.us
luck of the draw, busy day on the site, time of day ..can be many things.
ralphael··on Space Jam's 1996 website is still alive
thanks for sharing mate, great to know what was going on behind the scenes during this time.
ralphael··on Show HN: CloudSkew – Draw AWS, Azure, GCP, K8s architecture diagrams
Looks nice, what does it do that something like draw.io doesn't?
ralphael··on GitHub Is Down
...its back now for me.
ralphael··on Event-Driven Architecture
shame as I like the content and this could distract from it

ralphael··on Performance Tuning for .NET Core
I agree but in the context of the article, I believe the classes being sealed aren't meant to be overridden.

If the author has spent time optimising to that level, overriding probably isn't necessary or warranted in that area.

ralphael··on Performance Tuning for .NET Core
I agree, by using var you need to name your variable better therefore making your code more readable. Rather than relying on the interface/class definition to explain to someone why you used "obj".
ralphael··on Don't Steal Money from Day Traders Before They Lose It
I think this is what you are referring to https://www.theverge.com/2018/8/22/17716622/sec-business-wir...
ralphael··on Medieval Fantasy City Generator
Absolutely brilliant! I love hackernews for these kind of gems.
