racecar789··on Two days of oatmeal reduce cholesterol level
If switching to oatmeal, go with the unflavored raw oats. It's not bad once a person gets used to it. Substituting milk with water is also perfectly fine.

Eating a low sugar breakfast does feel pretty healthy.

racecar789··on Maze Algorithms (2017)
Pretty good! It would be nice to have a little icon showing at the preferred ending location.
racecar789··on Everything that's wrong with Google Search in one image
It’s likely that Google has tested how many ads it can place in search results before users lose patience and turn elsewhere.

On paper, the approach makes sense: push profitability as far as possible. But in practice, it can leave customers feeling squeezed and resentful, much like the increasingly nickel‑and‑dimed atmosphere visitors now complain about in Las Vegas, and the proliferation of tip screens.

racecar789··on Life, work, death and the peasant: Rent and extraction
It's a fitting title to describe life today for most people.
racecar789··on I ditched Docker for Podman
> you'd end up paying $9 a year per developer for the license

Correction: Docker Desktop is $9/month (not $9/year).

racecar789··on Money mistakes you didn't know you're making
The article makes valid points. However, many of its recommendations are not practical for the 60% of Americans who live paycheck to paycheck. Even merely contributing to a 401(k) or HSA can be difficult for these families.
racecar789··on Acronis True Image costs performance when not used
Hasleo Backup is completely free and is a pretty decent alternative to Macrium. I switched to Hasleo after Macrium went to subscription mode.

racecar789··on How I code with AI on a budget/free
Small recommendation: The diagrams on [https://wuu73.org/aicp] are helpful, but clicking them does not display the full‑resolution images; they appear blurry. This occurs in both Firefox and Chrome. In the GitHub repository, the same images appear sharp at full resolution, so the issue may be caused by the JavaScript rendering library.

And a semicolon, AI really likes semicolons.

I’d sign up for a service that calls a pharmacy on my behalf to refill prescriptions. In certain situations, pharmacies will not list prescriptions on their websites, even though they have the prescriptions on file, which forces the customer to call by phone — a frustrating process.

I do feel bad for pharmacists, their job is challenging in so many ways.

racecar789··on The correct amount of ads is zero
I would pay for YouTube premium if you can afford it. The cost is pretty reasonable and 55% of the subscription goes to content creators. It's not a huge amount but probably similar to what a creator would make if ads were shown.
racecar789··on Show HN: Open source framework OpenAI uses for Advanced Voice
Imagine being able to tell an app to call the IRS during the day, endure the on-hold wait times, then ask the question to the IRS rep and log the answer. Then deliver the answer when you get home.

Or, have the app call a pharmacy every month to refill prescriptions. For some drugs, the pharmacy requires a manual phone call to refill which gets very annoying.

So many use cases for this.

racecar789··on Pipe Syntax in SQL
In that example, "s" has two meanings: 1. A table being joined. 2. A column being summed.

For clarity, they should have assigned #2 to a different variable letter.

racecar789··on Sandboxing all the things with Flatpak and BubbleBox
Sandboxie works pretty well.
racecar789··on Broadcom has willingly dug its VMware hole, says cloud CEO [video]
Especially since a portion of the minnows will eventually grow-up to become whales.
racecar789··on Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing
That's too bad. State tax return forms are the worst. A lot of states don't have the resources to fine-tune their form design, and the instructions are often poorly written.
racecar789··on Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing
I filed 2022 taxes with FreeTaxUSA. Pricing was very reasonable ($15 total for fed and state combined). The interface was better than I expected for such a low cost service.

Prior to FreeTaxUSA, I used TaxSlayer, H&R Block, and Intuit. Intuit does surprise me by charging roughly the same as a CPA firm but for a "do it yourself" service.

racecar789··on The Humanist Report was demonitized by YouTube
I wish YouTube had a better support system for content creators.

racecar789··on Governor Newsom announces California will make its own insulin
I'm not sure it will be successful, but I am glad the governor is doing something. Not seeing much effort in Washington in regards to healthcare.

Vaping is certainly an option.
racecar789··on Crohn’s Disease: Is the Cold Chain Hypothesis Still Hot?
I can personally attest this is true. Nicotine does help with ulcerative colitis. I buy Swedish snus which is far less toxic that American tobacco.
racecar789··on Show HN: Windows 2000 on Docker
Did anyone frequently run into ntoskrnl errors that prevented Windows 2000 from booting? I ran into that error every six months but to be fair a number of the incidents happened after a power failure with no UPS.
racecar789··on A New Bootable USB Solution

racecar789··on Docker Desktop no longer free for large companies
Easier method to deal with monthly payment...Create a purchase order with 12 lines. One line for each month with dollar amounts defined. The purchase order serves as the "approval" so Accounts Payable can process without asking for coding information.

Example: I only have to revisit licensing once a year, to create a new 12 line purchase order. It's still a pain but I prefer purchase orders vs dealing with credit cards. In addition, querying expense history for purchase order lines provides far more detail vs querying a credit card platform. Credit card history tends to go into a black hole.

One possible hitch...Some companies might restrict Accounts Payable from receiving purchase orders for separation-of-duties reasons.
