quantumwoke··on ClickHouse raises $350M Series C
Is this money for growth or exiting employee options?
quantumwoke··on Ask HN: How are you acquiring your first hundred users?
I started free, and then upsold to a freemium version after a few years. In the free years, built the best product in the space and hustled to 20,000 DAUs.
quantumwoke··on HealthBench – An evaluation for AI systems and human health
How confident was it in that diagnosis? Did you trust its confidence if so? I asked this to my medico wife and apparently the other possibility is pericardial effusion from injury which can be life threatening.
quantumwoke··on HealthBench – An evaluation for AI systems and human health
Sounds like you needed a good PT not a physician.
quantumwoke··on Intellect-2 Release: The First 32B Model Trained Through Globally Distributed RL
Wonder what the privacy story is like. Enterprises don't usually like broadcasting their private data across a freely accessible network.
quantumwoke··on In kids, EEG monitoring of consciousness safely reduces anesthetic use
I think there is a definitional problem with "kids" vs "infants" vs "newborns" which are all difficult to define, the type of anaesthesia that was administered and we are also talking about 40 years ago. Our understanding of anaesthetics and heart surgery in newborns was much different than today. America definitely has a checkered and sordid past here and in psychiatry. But we also have a duty to be definitionally exact here which is why I tried to get a bit more context when the GP used the term "kids". I had thought before investigating that meant all the way up to teenagers.
quantumwoke··on In kids, EEG monitoring of consciousness safely reduces anesthetic use
It obviously varies on place of practice and the way you were taught. My understanding is the evidence is pretty clear that it helps but happy to defer to your lived experience.
quantumwoke··on In kids, EEG monitoring of consciousness safely reduces anesthetic use
My wife is a doctor and provided me (layperson) the following context. Apparently EEG is now used in most adult surgeries and has been increasing over time. It is used as a marker of how 'asleep' you are to guide how much medication you get. However, this is relatively recent and the use of EEG in kids (where the brainwaves are different) was not studied/used as much. It seems like this study pushes towards a future where EEGs are routine in most if not all surgeries to make them safer - especially as the next generation of anaesthetists are trained in it.
quantumwoke··on In kids, EEG monitoring of consciousness safely reduces anesthetic use
My wife is a doctor and looked into the history of this for a bit more context. Apparently, there were some cases in 1987 where premature neonates were paralysed but not given general anaesthesia due to risk of immediate death. This led to a position statement from the paediatric society at the time that nobody should be operated on without pain relief / general anaesthetic.

Note that this does not mean that general anaesthesia was not given at all to kids before 1987, but that there was a belief in the USA (and elsewhere) that newborns did not need pain relief during anaesthesia. Your use of 'kids' versus 'newborns' is a bit misleading in that respect.

quantumwoke··on An end to all this prostate trouble?
Women menstrual cycle tracking works off the same concept.
quantumwoke··on Visiting Us
My wife is a doctor and has a lot of negative things to say about Epic. I think they have succeeded due to vendor capture and lock-in in spite of their shoddy software that doesn't actually meet the needs of the users. Every doctor I've met through my wife would ditch it in a heartbeat if they could.
quantumwoke··on The Real Story Behind Sam Altman’s Firing From OpenAI
Some of the early comments here almost read as astroturfing from friends of 'sama. This article provides interesting context to one of the most consequential SV events of the decade.
quantumwoke··on Ikemen-GO: open-source reimplementation of MUGEN
Fighter Factory Studio and just make a few characters to figure out the quirks. The elecbyte documentation is ok for the basics, and then there are a few tutorials on MUGENGuild and MFFA as well. I agree, and I have the dataset to make a GenAI project out of this. Maybe I will do it someday!
quantumwoke··on Ikemen-GO: open-source reimplementation of MUGEN
Trust me, it gets weirder
quantumwoke··on Ikemen-GO: open-source reimplementation of MUGEN
Strongly recommend going through the process of creating a character in MUGEN/Ikemen. It's easy enough (with some legacy rough edges), and with Ikemen you can use it in multiplayer. There is a lot of depth in implementing specific fighting game mechanics and a wealth of resources out there from people who have gone before. The community is eccentric but like fighting games has a lot of depth in ultra niche areas.
quantumwoke··on ChatGPT Saved My Life (no, seriously, I'm writing this from the ER)
As multiple people in this thread have commented, most providers give you a result, a red highlight of the abnormal result, and a reference range. We don't know exactly what the post author received of course, but it's pretty likely that low platelets were called out.
quantumwoke··on ChatGPT Saved My Life (no, seriously, I'm writing this from the ER)
How is your adrenal gland nodule related to your genetic profile? AFAIUI, they are not related in any way.
quantumwoke··on ChatGPT Saved My Life (no, seriously, I'm writing this from the ER)
That would actually increase public trust in your post, I think.
quantumwoke··on ChatGPT Saved My Life (no, seriously, I'm writing this from the ER)
But there is an ER, urgent care, etc. available at most if not all times? Google is also available and would have accomplished the same result.
quantumwoke··on ChatGPT Saved My Life (no, seriously, I'm writing this from the ER)
These have existed for decades, although it might not always be surfaced. My provider gives me the reference range with every blood test and a red line for abnormal so I can know immediately where to start looking.
quantumwoke··on ChatGPT Saved My Life (no, seriously, I'm writing this from the ER)
Question to which I don't have the answer: does an instant LLM response that says you may have cancer, infection or some other malady based on a report alleviate your suspicions? Or would you rather wait for a measured discussion with a professional? Personally speaking, I might be fooled into contacting my doctor inappropriately citing a false positive from DrGPT which seems inefficient.
quantumwoke··on ChatGPT Saved My Life (no, seriously, I'm writing this from the ER)
This doesn't seem relevant to the post, rather an anecdote where you confirmed that you had EBV in the past with the help(?) of ChatGPT (which you already knew). I don't see where you diagnosed the cause of your rashes.
quantumwoke··on ChatGPT Saved My Life (no, seriously, I'm writing this from the ER)
I read this post with my wife (medical doctor) and we agreed that this breathless post missed the mark a bit. ChatGPT gave exactly the advice from a Google search for low platelets and rash. A call to any doctor, nurse practitioner or urgent care would have resulted in the same outcome with arguably more trust. The fact that the author trusted ChatGPT more for some reason (AI hype?) seems immaterial. The hyperbole of statements like a minor cut with low platelets = death or having "no platelets" (both false) solidified it - hype over substance.
quantumwoke··on Nobody Profits – George Hotz
The same George who sold iPhone exploits to Chinese grey market firms for a bit of extra cash? It's hard to take his points seriously here, and to be honest he has always skated erratically from point to point in his career. He already had plenty of opportunities to make enough money to realize these effective altruism-esque ideas.
quantumwoke··on RamaLama
It was mentioned in the other thread on the front page [1]

quantumwoke··on Sam Altman said startups with $10M were 'hopeless' competing with OpenAI
'sama is just maximising his upside in a completely rational way here. He knows he's the big fish, so he attempts to dissuade the little fish before they can even grow. I don't see a problem in him doing that, almost all VCs / CEOs would do the same.
quantumwoke··on CIA now favors lab leak theory to explain Covid's origins
Given we are on HN, it seems more likely that the claim originated on substack. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29938732 this may be one of the progenitor threads.
quantumwoke··on Ask HN: Is anyone making money selling traditional downloadable software?
It's actually an old Java stack using SWT.
quantumwoke··on Ask HN: Is anyone making money selling traditional downloadable software?
Yes, I have a side project making ~$40k/year doing this in a niche market.

I am fortunate in that I have some volunteers helping me with support so all up I spend about 5-10 hours per week doing support and development work.

In terms of business model, I have been quite generous and provide a perpetual support model for free and paid customers and do not charge for upgrades (currently). As my time has become more limited, I am looking at changing this.

Benefits of this model is that my product is the gold standard in the area and relatively sticky.

quantumwoke··on Stripe V2
Reminiscent of the changes to the Microsoft Graph API, which personally I wasn't a fan of. Hope stripe can maintain its developer first mentality.
