qtplatypus··on US and Iran agree to provisional ceasefire
Also Iran can drop the price of the Taxes whenever they want to in order to drive the alternatives into a loss.
qtplatypus··on Gravitational wave researchers cast new light on Antikythera mechanism mystery
If I recall the precision is limited to by the wavelength of the light being used. If they are using X-Rays in the 0.01 nm to 10 nm range wouldn't that give them more precision then optical light in the 380 nm to 700 nm range?
qtplatypus··on Can you inherit memories from your ancestors?
The left don't think that trauma can be inherited. They think that wealth and social standing can. If your parents have money they can use their wealth to make it easier for you to have money

If your parents are poor (perhaps due to racism) then you will live in a poor area with worse schools, possibly contaminated with pollution, subject to higher insurance and basic costs.

This doesn't require magic ancestral memories it just requires ecomonics.

qtplatypus··on Truck safty system incorrectly fines people due to daylight savings
The safe-t-cam system calculates average speed between key points by recording trucks licence plates as they go past. However the system made use of the local time (rather then some sort of epoc time) in its time calculations so gave results showing trucks taking 3 hours to travel a distance that it would normally take 4 hours to go.
qtplatypus··on Why people do not use their real name in HN?
There are a two main of reasons.

* People are worried about reprisals from their employer. * Lots of people have a greater connection to the name that they have decided for themselves over one that was assigned to them at birth.

This is very common with tech people. Hence why Google+ had the nymwars when it tried to enforce a wallet name policy.

This explains the nature of fixed point type theory and its application to trans rights.
qtplatypus··on Tyler Cowen: Why Does the Tech Workforce Lean Left?
I think it started to lean left when the conservatives started to become anti science.

Also consoles are general purpose computing devices in tech terms.
qtplatypus··on Google stifles YouTube competitor LBRY, banning it for pedantic reasons
I note that dailymotion, liveleak And niconico all have apps on android. So I don’t think they are deliberately blocking all competitors to YouTube.
qtplatypus··on They're deleting my channel, but they don't know why? [video]
The accepting false DMCA claims is something that the DMCA system sort of requires them to do. However they have in the past sued people who have issued false DMCA claims.
qtplatypus··on Google says it doesn't monopolize digital ad market – senators don't buy it
I experimented with testing with this line of Japanese.

フクロネコの仲間の中でもっともふ地いことで知られています

DeepL: It is known to be the most ground-breaking of all the bovine cats

Google: Known for being the most remote of all quolls

qtplatypus··on Google says it doesn't monopolize digital ad market – senators don't buy it
I don't think pre-filtering vs post filtering effects the decision. Basically the pre-CDA law was "If you apply any form of content based moderation then you are a publisher and therefor you can be sued for the libel people have posted". I was active in the anti-spam community at this point in time and one of the large concerns at that time was to build spam detection methods that where not content based in order to avoid the danger of losing the common-carrier status.

You said "Also, weren't those cases about certain types of content (defamatory or libelous claims)? Don't you think AI technology could be developed to help moderators detect that type of content?"

I do not think that you could build AI technology that would be able to do that. In US law (IANAL this is not legal advice) one of the things that separate libel from non libel is the truth of the statement. We are no where near the sophistication of AI to be able to determine the truth of statements. For example how would an AI be able to permit "Jeffrey Epstein is a child molester" but block the same statement made about another person?

Then you said "isn't there something wrong with the expectation that businesses feeling threatened by the public they serve can run to Congress for protection?"

I am of the view that one of the roles of a government is to provide a way when the rights and privileges of different groups come into conflict to resolve those conflicts. In a democratic republic the political process is entirely the correct place for businesses and other stakeholders to establish that balance.

I think that it is the correct balance that the actual author of the content should be the one who is held responsible for the content that they produce.

qtplatypus··on Activists Are Protesting Against Palantir Across the Country This Week
Given the amount of abuse ICE has done to children they are most likely a net contributor to child abuse.
qtplatypus··on Google says it doesn't monopolize digital ad market – senators don't buy it
Given both Cubby, Inc. v. CompuServe Inc. and Stratton Oakmont, Inc. v. Prodigy Services Co. we know that courts would have held moderated environments as publishers.
qtplatypus··on Google says it doesn't monopolize digital ad market – senators don't buy it
Before the CDA came around there was real fear that Internet forums getting sued for libel as a publisher. This was before the internet was a mainstream thing. Any comment on HN could be libel and ycombinator would risk being sued over it.
qtplatypus··on Google says it doesn't monopolize digital ad market – senators don't buy it
That would kill almost every internet company. For example if the CDA was repealed then this site would go away almost overnight.
qtplatypus··on CCP announces plan to take control of China's private sector
What does Catholic universities got to do with China? In this context CCP means the Chinese Communist Party.
qtplatypus··on Google accused of ‘double standard’ for punishing publishers for user comments
That might be true but I would give the counter example of the adpocolips. Most companies don't want to look like they are for racism.
qtplatypus··on Google accused of ‘double standard’ for punishing publishers for user comments
Google doesn’t want to dictate what is acceptable content on the internet. The people who buy ads don’t want to be associated with racism.
qtplatypus··on Google accused of ‘double standard’ for punishing publishers for user comments
I am worried that US senators confuse 230’s protection from legal action which some mystical barrier that protects you from all consequences.

It’s like the people who claim that moderation infringes on free speech. “Not running ads” is not the same as legal action.

qtplatypus··on Oracle’s TikTok deal accomplishes nothing
Didn't Oracle get founded to supply the CIA with data management technology?
qtplatypus··on Academy establishes inclusion standards for Oscars eligibility
Good so it will be simple for you to find a quote that supports this from the book.
qtplatypus··on Academy establishes inclusion standards for Oscars eligibility
Well that is something that is very strawman like. However you don’t;t need “far leftist thought” to examine this. The academy are well known to have tastes and favour some types of movies over others.

The oscars has consistently ignored SF/F, favoured films about history. To the point that some movie makers directly pander to the academy’s tastes in an attempt to get a Oscar nom.

The academy knows that there taste is out of touch with the American people because the movies that gets Oscar noms are less and less like the movies that American people like. This is a part of their attempt to fix this.

qtplatypus··on Academy establishes inclusion standards for Oscars eligibility
Hispanics and Latino/Latina are not the same. There are people who live in Latin America who don’t speak Spanish and people who speak Spanish who are not in Latin America.
qtplatypus··on Academy establishes inclusion standards for Oscars eligibility
They should be but if you look at the history they haven’t been. This is an effort to correct for this.
qtplatypus··on Academy establishes inclusion standards for Oscars eligibility
The awards where always about political points. It’s just a way for the MPAA to look legitimate. Further more it has never been about the merits of their art. Otherwise Boss Baby would never have got a nomination.
qtplatypus··on Academy establishes inclusion standards for Oscars eligibility
Because we haven’t gotten to being a colour blind world yet.

The Oscars have a long history of being biased towards white people. What is worse since winning a Oscar allows you to vote on the Oscars that bias has been perpetrated.

qtplatypus··on Police across Canada are using predictive policing algorithms, report finds
Because it creates a positive feedback loop. More police means more incidences of law breaking get detected as crimes, which results in more police enforcement.

Imagine a road network and police with a limited number of speed traps. If you send the speed to the places where there have been more people caught speeding then the fact that the speed traps where in that location will have a higher rate of caught speeders.

Another example is drug enforcement. Black people are searched more often then white people for drugs, which results in them being caught having drugs more often which in turn makes police think that they are more likely to have drugs.
