purringmeow··on Tinder sued for sexual harassment by former co-founder
False allegations are far from being fantastically rare.

You also have to acknowledge that when you have a rape accusation, there isn't a boolean result(either the allegation is false, or it's true and this results in some penalty). It's a broad spectrum, with only around a third of the cases resulting in conviction.[1]

Of the 136 cases of sexual assault 8 (5.9%) were coded as false reports, 61 (44.9%) did not proceed to any prosecution or disciplinary action, 48 (35.3%) were referred for prosecution or disciplinary action, and 19 (13.9%) contained insufficient information to be coded (see Table 2).

That's pathetic. This guy seems to have the emotional development of a 5 year old.
purringmeow··on Tinder sued for sexual harassment by former co-founder
The article stated the lawsuit has been started and I didn't see any verdict. So let's not be quick to judge, we've heard only 1 side of the story.
purringmeow··on Do You Know What an Angel Investor Is?
You do, it's just that the term is pretty encompassing :)
purringmeow··on Facebook crosses the line into mind control territory
Wow! That experiment is incredibly sociopathic - using unsuspecting users as pawn in your games. I am disgusted...
purringmeow··on [dead]
I don't get why you are trying to categorize people. There are all sorts of people in programming and that diversity is a great thing. Your whole book, at least judging by the excerpt, is an attempt to mock everyone who doesn't fit into your idea of a programmer.

Yes
purringmeow··on Drinking behind 1 in 10 deaths of working-age adults
Going out with people who aren't in IT helps too. I too have had that problem of just wanting to stay until 05:00 to do something, but I tell myself that's not the effective way and go to bed regardless.

I don't know you, so I don't know what else to say. Just experiment - try mixing exercise with active social life and new experiences. Go skydive or something like that :)

purringmeow··on Drinking behind 1 in 10 deaths of working-age adults
Exercise. You are focused on reps or breathing and you zone out. Really effective way to shift your focus and improves mental condition too.
purringmeow··on FAA bans the use of drones to deliver packages
I really can't see the need for premature bans. Has there been a significant amount of accidents involving the use of delivery drones? I don't think so, so why potentially limit your competitiveness? :(
purringmeow··on Unblinking Eyes Track Employees
I was pretty sad after reading this short novel.

SPOILER

In the real world there won't be a thoughtful entrepreneur who saves everybody. I can clearly see that bleak future happening and I am frightened how we are going to deal with the consequences.

purringmeow··on How can an introvert Asian engineer like me make friends?
Wow, I got so many messages on reddit and email! Thanks a lot!
purringmeow··on How can an introvert Asian engineer like me make friends?
Sorry if that's not the right place, but I have a similar problem.

I am a 1st year CS student and I can't find a coding buddy. By that I mean someone to study new technologies with, to work on learning-focused projects together and exchange ideas. Most of my schoolmates are overwhelmed with classes and don't have time or desire for partnering up.

So, HN, if you are up for some node.js/javascript or C++ learning, it would be awesome to get in touch. I've even posted a thread[1] on reddit, but so far no luck.

purringmeow··on Ask HN: If learning to develop for iOS- start with Obj C or Swift?
I am not an iOS dev, so I apologize if the answer is too obvious, but why did Apple introduce Swift? What's wrong with Objective-C?
purringmeow··on Probably a Good Time to Say That I Don’t Believe Robots Will Eat All the Jobs
We are very far from merging with an AI, but what's probably going to happen during our lifetime in my opinion is the displacement of even skilled labor by AI/automation. This is definitely scary, considering how slow catching up have laws and regulations been throughout history. I am almost certain there will be a period filled with social unrest and some sort of crises.
purringmeow··on Math for seven-year-olds
Yeah, math education is ordinary schools is terrible. I still haven't learned this, although I am 20...
purringmeow··on Why Canada’s banks have weaker passwords than Twitter or Google
How am I going to login if I catch a cold?
purringmeow··on Google Drive is down (502. That’s an error.)
Yes, it is. I am in Central Europe and Drive loads just fine.
purringmeow··on German foreign intelligence agency wants to access social media in realtime
We are talking about Serbia, not the US.
purringmeow··on Ask HN: FU Money: What is your number?
2 million Euro. Just putting it in bank with 5% interest is 100,000 euro/year - more than enough for me.
purringmeow··on Drones Get A Messaging Network Aptly Called SkyNet
Awesome! I am really thinking of getting into drones as a hobby. There are so many cool projects you can do, especially when you have a communications system. Imagine a pack of drones "hunting" together for something!
purringmeow··on German foreign intelligence agency wants to access social media in realtime
Could you please link to the map?

And how are you 100% sure that you aren't being watched by your ISP at least? :)

purringmeow··on Getting to work on diversity at Google
Wow, a 70 year old engineer?!
purringmeow··on Getting to work on diversity at Google
Burnout maybe? How long is the average work week?
purringmeow··on Rails Google Summer of Code students and mentors
I am a first year CS student and I really want to contribute to an OSS project, however, I can't find one that I can be productive on. For example - I thought shoes4 was suitable, but after looking at the issues, I honestly have no idea what to do. Something like Rails is probably absolutely out of my league. So where do I start? Docs, like you mentioned?
purringmeow··on How Americans Die
It's not just about making it after 80. Quality of life > length of life.
purringmeow··on US burns through all high-skill visas for 2015 in less than a week
I am an Eastern European living in Central Europe.

I moved because University and because of the better living/work conditions.

However, if I had the chance I would probably move to the US. Maybe CA, but I am still on the fence. The things stopping me are the super expensive health care, work-life balance and higher crime rates.

purringmeow··on Torn and weary (on Brendan Eich and Mozilla)
Who said Eich is a homophobe?

If marriage were a right, why are we denying it to so many groups - not only gays, but polygamists and relatives?

Also, do not equate racism and interracial marriages with homosexual marriages. The former is just a matter of skin color - a black man and a white man are the same. If we go by the racist logic, it would be OK to deny a tanned white man marrying a pale white woman.

Homosexual marriage is a whole other matter and a lot of people don't know where they stand. If you want the public to support your cause, no matter what it is, it would be wise to be positive, firm and unemotional. I am sure the media sh*tstorm that hit B.Eich has affected a number of people and undoubtedly turned some of them away from pro LGBT causes.

purringmeow··on How Rare Are Anti-Gay-Marriage Donations in Silicon Valley?
Here is another viewpoint:

A lot of people oppose gay marriage, because of the kids that the couples would undoubtedly have/adopt. We all agree that homosexuality is not a choice, right? Most people are heterosexual - I dug around for the exact percentage of gay people and most sources cite between 2% and 5% - and this means most kids born will be hetero. It's not an unpopular opinion to say that a heterosexual kid needs a role model(parent) from the same gender and with the same sexual orientation in order to develop a healthy and balanced personality.

Hehe, Israel is certainly a unique place.

If you want to know how Israel became the technology capital it is today, I thoroughly recommend Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel's Economic Miracle
