progre··on Ask HN: Do You Trust Grammarly?
Maybe if you have a few "objects" in the sentence already
progre··on Children's Railways of the Former USSR
All self respecting industry operations in Sweden (steel, wood, papermills, weapons) had their own seaside resorts for workers from about 1920 to the late 1980-ies. Most had housing and company clinics too. Some of these companies were state owned, some in private hands. It all ended when the world went stock-market crazy and the maximize profit guys started to "core-business" the industries, and colsolidation started.

I think that capitalism was kind of hi-jacked by the money guys at that point. Lots of company towns where, if not thriving, getting along, working. Not super profitable but doing ok. Then practically overnight they turned to wasteland when the mills closed.

progre··on Harris’s List of Covent-Garden Ladies (1757–1795)
A list of london prostitutes, with reviews! Or am I missunderstanding?

Also fun to see the changing of single letters in the names to stars and dashes. This is used on the biggest independent forum host in Sweden (flashback.se) when naming suspects in crimes. I assume this is done elsewere too.

progre··on Kurt Vonnegut on the “shapes” of stories
Same for me except I started to notice characters that get no or very little backstory. Then I just sit and wait for them to die. Stupid brain.
progre··on Kurt Vonnegut on the “shapes” of stories
Pfft, how about 36 basic stories?

Or 134?

progre··on Ask HN: Should I sell my vintage computer collection?
I didn't have anything like a collection myself, but I did own an Amiga 500 and breadbin C64. I sold them, for lack of time to actually use them.

I sometimes regret selling the 500.

progre··on Weedkiller ingredient tied to cancer found in 80% of US urine samples
Hot water is a known carcinogenic.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470-2...

It's there, in the statistics. The thing is, the risks of eating meat or drinking hot espressos are like national lottery kind of probabilities. Not like asbestos or carbon particles, wich have more like rock paper scissor kind of probabilities.

progre··on Goodbye Medium, hello Ghost
I have a very similar setup. The python script is about 60 lines including sftp push. Haven't hardly changed it since I first got it working, but then again, I don't write all that much.
progre··on Tooth-Pick (1891) [pdf]
I mean, yes, it is dumb. But the patent is for the manufacturing process as applied to toothpicks. It's not for the invention of The Toothpick
progre··on Why hasn't Middle Earth had an Industrial Revolution?
But then the author goes on to quote LOTR quite extensively and brings up all sorts of economy tidbits ("the dwarves don't farm"), so they obviously have read LOTR.
progre··on 16-bit RISC-V processor made with carbon nanotubes (2019)
Also, saying it's made with nanotubes kind of implies that nanotubes was used as transistors. Instead, "nanotubes" seems to be used as a substrate, and the transistors are formed using traditional oxide doping.
progre··on Leica 0-Series no. 105 owned by'Oscar Barnack
I think there is some kind of heritage site agreements for the the moon landing gear.
progre··on Shotcut is a free, open-source, cross-platform video editor
My take: It worked excellent for unserious work a couple of weeks ago.
progre··on How to stop junk mail
The equivalent for Swedish residents:

Free and permanent unless you opt in again.

progre··on Viruses that were on hiatus during Covid are back, behaving in unexpected ways
Who didn't close schools and daycare.
progre··on Viruses that were on hiatus during Covid are back, behaving in unexpected ways
Swedish way wins again
progre··on Werner Herzog eats his shoe
Well she (being a bit of a edgelord in her younger days) promised to "show skin" if she got elected, and some people thoght that they would get a strip tease or something like that. As I remember it, she did post a square super zoomed in image supposedly of her body but it was impossible to actually identify any specific body part.
progre··on Werner Herzog eats his shoe
Not to derail this into another subthread about the politics of sweden, but who are you refering to? The only one I know who have made such a promise was Kindberg-Batra when she was a candidate for the Stockholm municipality.
progre··on Listening to songs can cause a physiological response known as “frisson”
Lots of different styles that can fall under BM but here is some:

https://open.spotify.com/album/3LHSxySCaooKrQxuLtuYSV?si=OVS...

Wolves in the Throneroom, kind of dreamy artsy style. I'd like to think of these guys as the Pink Floyd of BM.

https://open.spotify.com/album/5t5tP8dVwdyI8yTShWcIzX?si=zzL...

Satyricon, started out oldschool and raw, evolved to a more polished more produced (clean vocals even!). This album is right at the start of the more polished style but still quite a lot of energy.

https://open.spotify.com/album/4a4g7PAi7KRsCQykBFqE5E?si=4LG...

Darkthrone, about as raw as it gets while still good. 2 guys and a porta studio, never played live.

https://open.spotify.com/album/63NhXXsb7BNEtLCTnYzub2?si=8qL...

Feminazgul, deep in the nerdery now. Queer themed with Tolkien inspired/ripped lyrics.

progre··on Listening to songs can cause a physiological response known as “frisson”
Same here. There is someting with the almost complete saturation of the mid- and upper frequencies of BM that focuses me like nothing else.
progre··on Passenger with “no idea how to fly” lands plane after pilot incapacitated
In some situations illegal things become legal. Like how it's illegal to stand on the street and stop the traffic. Except it becomes legal if you are preventing drivers from driving their cars of a collapsed bridge.
progre··on Fritzing is an open-source electronic design tool
What a coincidence! I'm looking to replace Fritzing as it somehow corrupted my project file (the project file is readable but the netlist part is missing)

I have gotten LibrePCB (had to build it, as there is no package available for Kubuntu) but I haven't really had a chance to try it out. Lots of other interesting suggestions here though!

progre··on The Owen Wilson Wow API
I don't see how that would happen. This forum is paged text only. 9gag is images and infinite scroll. Joke subissions on the HN frontpage almost always has some intresting merit other than the joke.
progre··on The New OCaml Website
Maybe it's more usefull to talk about a 'slant'? Like, you can totaly do desktop apps with custom GUI components in Java but those tends to be written in C++ for some reason.

Like java, python, c# 'slants' towards web services and maaybe CRUD apps, C++ 'slants' towards games and graphicly complex apps.

progre··on GNU Nano 6.3

progre··on Alphabet Announces First Quarter 2022 Results
For me, I think the type of ads have shifted a little bit too. Less German cars and carbonated sugar drinks (big brand ads) and more Home Shopping Channel type ads. And Get Rich Quick While Working From Home-testimonials.
progre··on 3,200-year-old Egyptian tablet records excuses for why people missed work
Instead we are booted with old useless drivers like "Recognize snake"
progre··on Electronics Explained: Fundamentals for engineers, technicians and makers (2018)
Wouldn't say Moritz videos are the deep end. He is explaining resistors by comparing them to water pipes with narrow parts. He is also very good at pointing out where such comparisons don't work.
progre··on Electronics Explained: Fundamentals for engineers, technicians and makers (2018)
An alternative, even if you are not into modular synths, is Moritz Klein's videos https://youtube.com/c/MoritzKlein0

The basics are very well explained.

progre··on The Applesoft Compiler (TASC): We have the source code, in a sense
The post states that it was developed by a single guy though.
