progre··on July 5, 1687: When Newton explained why you don't float away
To me, the funniest part of why Principica was bankrolled by Edmund Halley is that is was supposed to be funded by the Royal Academy. Only, their previous publishing project "The history of fishes" had faceplanted and they had no money.

Also, when Principica was funded and Halley was himself short on cash, RA decided that they could not afford to actually pay him money (he was the RA secretary). Instead he would get copies of The History of fishes

progre··on Colombia seizes first unmanned narco-submarine with Starlink antenna
The wavelengths used in satelite communication are entirely absorbed by water. I think the sub would have to surface to use the antenna.

progre··on When your last name is Null, nothing works
In YAML (the gift that keeps on giving, see the False/Norway debacle) the last name of Null would have to be quoted, otherwise it would signify the null value.
progre··on Lua is so underrated
Was the first version of Redis not in fact written in TCL?
progre··on Mechanically strong yet metabolizable plastic breaks down in seawater
> Plastics that can metabolize in oceans are highly sought for a sustainable future.

Really? I think that putting more nutrients in the water is almost as bad as having plastics floating around. The Baltic sea for example, have dead zones caused by agricultural runoff.

Surely, the best would be to not put more stuff in the water?

progre··on 91% of polled Amazon staff unhappy with RTO, 3-in-4 want to jump ship
The french gentry very deliberately wanted a American style liberal revolution. But by the time the guillotine was rolled out, the revolution had turned into something they had 0 control over. Not to say it was in the hands of the peasants either of course.

progre··on Oink: An API for PHP in a single file

https://github.com/prog-re/ugly/blob/main/docs/manual.md

Edit: I added links to Oink and Zaap from my readme.md. We could make a Single file PHP api framework webring!

progre··on Show HN: Tool to calculate how much milk is needed to make an amount of cheese
Good choice if you like intestinal worms
progre··on Fired comedian ordered to get day job back after jokes ruled 'simply funny'
Humor is not banned and nor should it be. But maybe, to avoid confusion we could make humourus posts have a * or someting? And maybe humor can live in a separate section of the site so it doesn't mix with the other content. But if it still doesn't work I think we all know of a final solution for humor.
progre··on Niklaus Wirth has died
No black bar? I think he deserves it.
progre··on The Loneliness of the Mid-Level Vimmer
Nice swipe at C# (and Java). It's not true anymore for .Net Core though (that you need the bloated editor). All of the tooling is command line now
progre··on XCurl
> It somehow sounds like the author is upset that someone forked his project.

I didn't get that at all. It reads like he is slightly annoyed that he is getting detail requests for a half baked fork though.

progre··on XCurl
It's still there in the powershell 5 witch is still the default in Windows 10
progre··on XCurl
I'm surprised that they don't just use Invoke-Webrequest from PowerShell.

That has to be good enough since Microsoft insists on having "curl" as an alias for Invoke-Webrequest.

progre··on The Muddled Origins of the Word 'Viking'
I agree, the story is pretty long winded, but they are not wrong: Vikings never referred to themselves as vikings, nor did anyone else at the time. The word is old Norse of course but as far as I know was not used by Snorri. My understanding is that it was almost a derogatory term. They are also correct in that modern usage of the word started with the national romantics of the 19:th century.

So the word itself is a (almost) modern invention or at least re-purposing. Does not matter. We need words for things.

progre··on SQL reserved words – An empirical list

progre··on Tell HN: Postman update removes all your stuff if you refuse to create account
Yep, me to. Since it's just textfiles I can have them checked into git and share them. Credentials stays in a separate environments file (not checked in). I'm pretty happy with this setup.
progre··on Forrest Mims and RadioShack (2017)
From what I can remember when he was on the Amp Hour podcast, what he is asserting is that some of the current atmo temo data is wrong, or biased in some way that makes it seem worse than it is. No outright denial though.
