progre··on Plastic Money
The wonderfull Cash-chip was embedded into Visa debit card issued by the bank. It also had "Valid in Sweden only" printed beside it, on an othervise internationally recognized debit-card.

I know of at least one person who had to spend the night in a detainment cell at JFK and then had to take a plane back to Sweden the next morning because the customs agent concluded that they didn't have any money for their stay in New York.

Thank you for the, uh... Warning.
progre··on Forced rhubarb, a vegetable deprived of sunlight, is having a renaissance (2019)
Some beekeepers where I live put strips of rhubarb stalks in the hives to treat varoa. Not sure how effevtive it is though.
progre··on 1901: Semiconductor rectifiers patented as “cat's whisker” detectors
I think mine was called "MyKit 100", no Radio shack branding.

There was a small booklet with circuits and connection lists, like 1-12-14 meaning that you where supposed to put wires between those connections.

Absolutely no explenation about how the circuits worked.

I had one as well, but I recall a variable capacitor used for tuning.
progre··on Atari has launched collectible arcade circuit boards of retro classics
For a pcb. No components.

It's more of a blog post explaining the thinking behind the change, right?

Or, looking at it from the other side, most posts here are advertising in one way or another.

progre··on Moog sells its business to InMusic
While I'm no fan of Uli's business practises, he does expose the fact that the uniqueness of a lot of gear is way overstated. And we havent seen actual innovation from the likes of Moog, Roland, Korg since the 90:ies maybe. So if they insist on repackeging the same ROMpler and Curtis chips at ever higher prices... Clone away.

Yeah, Bobs cousin, Bill Moog

The problem with markdown, as I understand it, is that it's not possible to correctly render without reading the entire document.

I think the gemini format is attempting to make it possible to basically render the document line by line.

If the car is still a wire would be cheaper and more effective I think.

This is satire
progre··on Mayan ball game scoreboard thought to be over 1k years old found in Mexico
Yeah, but humans do lots of stuff just for fun too.

It was a serious question. I see this "probably ritual" a lot when reading about old things. I get the feeling that this comes from some older Hobbsian "brutish and short" view of how people lived. Like "since they where not as advanced and smart as us the must have been half starved all the time and coudn't possibly have a ball game just for the hell of it"

progre··on Mayan ball game scoreboard thought to be over 1k years old found in Mexico
Howcome everything old we dig up get this "probably ritual use" stamp?
progre··on Ask HN: When did multiple environments become standard practice?
You'd need managment to really get what you are doing for that not to be career suicide. Because you will look like a slow ass developer, and since there is rarely problems you'd be mostly invisable.

Compare that with devs or teams that get features out the door relatively swiftly: Sure, there is problems in production sometimes, but mostly fixed pretty fast too. A dev team like that looks like heroes.

progre··on Ask HN: When did multiple environments become standard practice?
How are the developers supposed to debug things if they can't see the real data?

Prod environments gets problems that never ever crops up in dev environments because the test data in those evironments are bounded by the developers imaginations.

In prod, real users regularly do unimginable things.

progre··on Janet for Mortals
> 4. Pegular expressions

Good one. PEGs feels like having a parsing superpower compared to regexes.

progre··on Janet for Mortals
Sure you can, but last I tried (admitedly a good long while ago) the exe included everything except that fucking Visual Studio DLL that everything requires.
progre··on Cantu a tenore
Italy are marketing themselves as "Cultural Superpower" since a few years. Having lots of UNESCO things plays in to that I guess?

But apart from the marketing, Italy really has a lot of stuff worth protecting.

progre··on Popular education in Sweden: much more than you wanted to know (2022)
>tightly knit to workers movement

Most popular movements had/has their own study orgamisation.

In rural Sweden it's just as likely to be Vuxenskolan, the study branch of the agrarian movement (Centern, 4H, hushållningssällskapet)

ABF would be the workers study org, Medborgarskolan the conservatives.

There are 10 national organsiations in all.

I think we are still in the early days of software. No need to sit around in nostalgia, the software revolution is still happening.
progre··on The Janet Language
I think its a pretty nice language.

Those extra bits of syntax that makes it "not a lisp" are mostly around defining "not list" kind if data structures. I find it practical.

I work with Poles all the time. There definetly is a huge market for IT type work in Poland. Lots of contracting in the rest of Europe since Poles are still quite cheap but in the EU.
