proaralyst··on 385 Feet of Crazy: The Most Audacious Flying Machine
I thought the argument was that rockets spend a lot of fuel just getting through the thick low part of the atmosphere, which is the same point at which they're heaviest. Skip the start & you need less fuel.
proaralyst··on The Rise and Fall of Pixel QI
I can hold it in one hand or set it on a surface and read while eating, brushing my teeth, holding onto a train etc.

I still love paper books but these situations always make me miss my kindle.

proaralyst··on E.Deorbit (2016)
The problem is that if a collision happens it produces a lot of debris on unpredictable orbits. This process can run away and lead to orbital denial: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kessler_syndrome
proaralyst··on CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing causes lots of mutations
I suspect you're much more likely to give yourself cancer than cause an I am Legend-style mutation.
proaralyst··on I Stop Celebrities from Blowing Their Money
Or give them the benefit of the doubt and email them.
proaralyst··on Apple’s ‘Behind the Mac’ ads have a double meaning
I'm curious: what distro do you use? There are definitely distributions that don't require much maintenance load.
proaralyst··on Facebook bug set 14M users' sharing settings to public
This might fall under the GDPR, at which point they'd get between 2 and 4% of their annual turnover in fines.
proaralyst··on Linus Torvalds on aliasing
I think that's here: https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/6/6/88
proaralyst··on [dead]
Needs a [2016] and perhaps a URL rewrite to the non-amp: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/12/think-organic-fo...
proaralyst··on The .app domain is now availiable
Interesting, it's in the HSTS preload list, so you have to use https as a .app domain!
proaralyst··on AT&T updates firmware to block access to 1.1.1.1
That's exactly the problem: Facebook holds a special position on that ISP. Imagine a new social network trying to compete. If users can access Facebook when they can't access the new social network it's yet another reason to avoid switching.
proaralyst··on Google’s new Chat service shows contempt for Android users’ privacy
I really wish there were a third phone OS: I don't want to buy iOS devices because the hardware is only manufactured by Apple and on Android you can't get away from Google.

There's the new Purism phone but it probably won't be able to run WhatsApp.

proaralyst··on Addressing Recent Claims of “Manipulated” Blog Posts in the Wayback Machine
I don't think they purge the archives, I think they just don't serve them on the wayback machine.
proaralyst··on Librem 5 Docs
I'd really like one of these but I don't foresee it being able to run Whatsapp, which all my friends and family use.
proaralyst··on Facebook Container Extension: Take control of how you’re being tracked
It won't, but it'll still help with the low-hanging fruit of just giving you a cookie.
proaralyst··on Facebook Container Extension: Take control of how you’re being tracked
That is mostly the case. However, other websites may ask your browser to make requests to Facebook domains (to load in social buttons or tracking scripts/pixels). Those requests will include any cookies your browser has for Facebook as they're direct to Facebook domains.

This extension gives Firefox selective amnesia: if you're in a Facebook container tab, it'll remember and send those cookies. If you're not, it won't!

An alternative solution is to never make those third party requests in the first place, but you might need some of them for content you're actually interested in viewing. Using both a blocking extension and this container extension should improve your privacy towards Facebook.

proaralyst··on Facebook Container Extension: Take control of how you’re being tracked
Privacy Badger is attempting to prevent Facebook from tracking you by blocking URLs known to load tracking code or pixel trackers etc.

This extension isolates your Facebook login cookies while you're browsing on non-Facebook websites, hence making it harder for those tracking techniques to identify you.

proaralyst··on Kim Dotcom wins battle in ongoing fight against U.S. extradition
Why the laugh? The State caused him injury. Would it be better to leave the injustice alone? Just say sorry? If this were a civil case he'd certainly be awarded monetary damages.
proaralyst··on The Case for Writing Papers in Economics Using FaKe LaTeX [pdf]
Sorry, I meant justification as in the typesetting sense:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typographic_alignment#Justifie...

This is something TeX is _very_ good at. Word, less so.

proaralyst··on Our Interesting Call with CTS-Labs
Just FYI: you can edit your original comment, which is likely the better method in the future.
proaralyst··on The Case for Writing Papers in Economics Using FaKe LaTeX [pdf]
There's also the awful justification throughout.
proaralyst··on Britain expels Russian diplomats over poisoning of ex-spy
I think the parent may have been referring to the Malaysian Airlines passenger jet shot down over Ukraine with a Russian anti-air missile system.
proaralyst··on Firefox 59 released
What news are you looking for? I'm fairly sure extensions targeting the older APIs will not be supported in any future release.
proaralyst··on Cheap 3D-printed home is a start for the 1B who lack shelter
I could be wrong but clicking through that website I got the impression the $300 house was a specification they haven't got a design for.

So this could be revolutionary in that it exists.

proaralyst··on Playing Video Games with My Son Isn’t What I Thought It Would Be
This points out a possibility I never thought of: archiving your children's play! I suppose we already keep art that our children produce but something so complexly imagined & constructed over hours was previously fairly ephemeral.

I recently had the pleasure of reviving a game world my brother & I had built three years ago. Wandering around that was a nice trip through nostalgia. These kids will be able to do that for their ten year old selves, all the way up.

proaralyst··on What Happens When Bitcoin Miners Take Over Your Town
The more coins you lock into an investing wallet, the more likely the network is to choose you to mint a block.

In practice it's quite a bit more complex but that's the basic idea.

proaralyst··on Show HN: Ipfs-dropzone, a subclass of Dropzone.js that publishes to IPFS
One thing I've failed to find out about IPFS: who pays for hosting? The user? Or is it donated by some peers?
proaralyst··on Why I Still Use Vim
Which features of VSCode in particular do you like?
proaralyst··on Ask HN: Does anyone use an alternative to a password manager?
Insertion/generation don't prompt you for your password.
proaralyst··on Clang runs in the browser and compiles C++ to WebAssembly
Unfortunately techniques like browser fingerprinting[0] still work in private browsing and can be used to link your private browsing to your normal browsing.
