poloniculmov··on PlayStation cancels Kojima's PHYSINT, Xbox steps in
Uncharted did more for PS3 than MGS4. I doubt anyone bought a PS4 for Death Stranding.
poloniculmov··on PlayStation cancels Kojima's PHYSINT, Xbox steps in
Kojima has a history of overspending by trying to make grandiose but weird games. And while they performed well, MGS4 sold less then The Last of Us or other big hits. I think that Kojima's games are games that people talk about more than they play. Probably MGS5 is the only one that actually "plays good".
poloniculmov··on Why travellers are obsessed with foreign supermarkets
I was shocked when I stepped in a KFC outside Romania and I couldn't get the regular garlic sauce that's like the default option here. Turns out, it's not sold anywhere else, the world is missing out.
poloniculmov··on The Water Footprint of AI
I'd kinda rather have almonds than data centers, If I could choose.
poloniculmov··on Why My Father Is Wrong: A Defense of Guitar Hero
no, there's slopsmith, which is a vibe-coded alternative that's been embraced by the rocksmith community. It's turning into what everybody hoped Rocksmith+ will be.
poloniculmov··on EU Fines Google $1.02B for Favoring Its Own Services
How about Google obeys the law and stops abusing their position?
poloniculmov··on EU Fines Google $1.02B for Favoring Its Own Services
I'm blaming Google for this, but most people just don't know why it happens. Probably they'll end up mandating that Google must show a notice with the reason and it will be implemented in the worst possible way.

All of these hissy fits Google and Apple are throwing are just making me wanting to use them less and less and I'm doing my best to explain how tech companies are doing malicious compliance to others.

poloniculmov··on Ferrari Luce
It looks like the UI of one of the good NFS games from that time period. I love it!
poloniculmov··on Coffee with a splash of physics: how to make the most out of your brew
There's forced labour and child labour in tea growing, it's mostly grown in countries that have different definitions for human rights. And unless you're buying specialty tea, those farmers are paid pennies while doing hard work.

I don't think there's any ethical consumption of industrial scale agriculture that cannot be mechanized, because we don't want to pay the real costs.

poloniculmov··on $800 Monthly Car Payments Are Hurting Car Sales
The same Toyota Corolla spec is 6000 euro more expensive now.
poloniculmov··on AIs can't stop recommending nuclear strikes in war game simulations
The civ subreddit talks too much about Gandhi, no wonder that LLMs trained on that data are biased.
poloniculmov··on The Problem with LLMs
The industry is sick because everyone is looking for the lowest prices, but translators don't like machine translation. They don't want to just review the output, because actually doing the translation leads to better understanding of what they have to do.
poloniculmov··on Micron Announces Exit from Crucial Consumer Business
They can spin it back up once the bubble pops.
poloniculmov··on OpenAI needs to raise at least $207B by 2030
But who wants that? And you're going to say that's exactly what a travel agent does, selling me stuff so he can get a kickback. But when stuff goes wrong, I'll yell at the travel agent so he has some incentive to curate his ads.
poloniculmov··on Tinkering is a way to acquire good taste
Cheap electric guitars are much better now since the parts are CNC'd, even if they don't come properly setup from the factory. As long as the fretwork is good, you can easily upgrade everything else if you have problems with it.
poloniculmov··on Canada Set to Side with China on EVs
An X3 (1930kg) is 100kg heavier than a Tesla (1822kg) in the EU (according to the manufacturers websites) and nobody here would think of an X3 as a small car.
poloniculmov··on Peter Thiel Essay on the Antichrist, One Piece, and More
It would have too much power so all the psychos in the world would do everything to get elected.
poloniculmov··on Show HN: OffChess – Offline chess puzzles app
Try lichess' beta app, it's much more user friendly, even if it's missing a couple of features.
poloniculmov··on Fandom sells gaming media brand Giant Bomb to long-term staff
Jeff Gerstmann, one of the founders, also goes into details about this, Giantbomb was always making money, but had issues scaling up because corporate wouldn't invest in them. He says that it was very hard for them to monetize the podcast, which was one of the biggest podcasts before the boom, because they wouldn't allow him to sign a deal with a ad network, nor would they provide a sales team so they could get those ad deals.

CBS also owning Gamespot was a big issue, because it wasn't making money but it had the potential of bringing much more if they could fix it. It got even worse with the last 2 rounds of buyouts, because the buyers never wanted Giantbomb, it was a package deal.

poloniculmov··on Beer on Board in the Age of Sail (2017)
While yeast will consume most of the nutrients, there's still residual sugar in beer. Hops will inhibit microbial and bacterial growth, but they will not stop it completely.
poloniculmov··on Beer on Board in the Age of Sail (2017)
Brewed beer can get yeast or bacterial infections, especially if you cannot refrigerate it and don't have the means to sanitize recipients.
poloniculmov··on It Was an Ambush
Shouldn't the people of Ukraine decide this?
poloniculmov··on How to change your settings to make yourself less valuable to Meta
Same, I love it because it will stop me from mindlessly scrolling. My only complaint is that if I actually wait, the next ad doesn't come soon enough.
poloniculmov··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
His campaign messages weren't outright extremist, just your casual populism, impossible promises and a dash of dogwhistles. Once he won the first round of elections, people really started to look into his past and it's pretty insane.
poloniculmov··on Sony announces PS5 Pro, a $700 graphics workhorse available Nov. 7
Did you forget about the 32x and the Mega CD? We're back in the golden age of the Sega Genesis.
poloniculmov··on OnlyFans' porn juggernaut fueled by a deception
They're selling a fake relationship and taking advantage of lonely people. Sellling porno flicks is much more honest.
poloniculmov··on Online Dating
what data? I've only heard this from the "manosphere".
poloniculmov··on Should this be a map or 500 maps?
Waze sort-of does this, it tries to keep you moving by taking lots of left turns and side streets. I hate it :).
poloniculmov··on Time Magazine's Best Inventions of 2023 Award for Humane's AI Pin
As a pedestrian, please don't use scooters on the sidewalk.
poloniculmov··on When did dogs become our best friends?
They didn't, I'm pointing out that the problem isn't the space (apartment), but that owners aren't providing adequate stimulation and companionship for the dogs.
