poisonarena··on NPR quits Twitter after being labeled as 'state-affiliated media'
It is, since 2015-2016 its just awful. I used to love NPR, listening to is everyday in the 2000s and first half of 2010s, love the podcasts. SOMETHING happened, and it took a whole year or so for almost everything to be focused on politics and race and trump and I just completely lost interest.

poisonarena··on Show HN: ADHD-friendly Pomodoro web app
aren't pom's 20-25 min, not 60 min by default? the two green and blue choices are confusing, i didn't realize one was break and the other was work until i started a test session. Also the the time remaining should be displayed in the page title, so i can be in another tab and see it. The dark mode is nice
poisonarena··on Italian government seeks to penalize the use of English words
While not Europe, I can tell you my experience in Israel as someone who lived there in the 2000's, left in the 2010s, and returned in the 2020s(felt like a time machine).. within about 10-15 years so much of what I think was distinct about israeli culture seemed to vanish and it felt like American culture made a huge impact short of some older russian enclave communities(not including their children). Everything from television/music/movies/media, to slang and dating, politics and views, and just how people behaved in general (grew up in southern tel aviv surrounded by 'arsim' like a type of chav or something). There is still relics of it in behavior and style but it is almost always something I notice in people 40+ years.

I also saw it happen over the course of maybe 4-5 years when I lived in Mexico City in 2013-2017.

I enjoyed that wikipedia link more than the novel
poisonarena··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
they are also somehow cheaper here than in Israel and it is infuriating to me
poisonarena··on Godot 4.0 Released
works great, I haven't switched to 4 though.
poisonarena··on Gut microbes could drive brain disorders
how do you know it is from eating vegetables and not just dialed down with time or other factors?
poisonarena··on The haunting brain science of long Covid
I live in Israel and only the very old people wear masks because they have compromised immune systems. It was downgraded to the cold/flu and it is no longer checked at the airport. Most of the country is vaccinated, many 'boosted' , and it I have yet to meet anyone who hasnt had COVID at least one time.

I just now visited the USA and am surprised to see people still scared or concerned. It is totally over for most of the world. I wear a mask when I am sick so I dont get others sick, but it really has nothing to do with COVID in particular. Regarding COVID, I have to agree with the Israeli health authorities, which have largely dismissed the threat.

poisonarena··on US cancer patient developed 'uncontrollable' Irish accent
Interesting you mention that, I have noticed that in Spain as well, as well as in Israel(2nd generation immigrants from argentina), and never an accent. But in the USA 2nd and even sometimes 3rd generation kids from whose parents are from Mexico, will have a distinct accent, and I always found it very curious.
poisonarena··on What’s Wrong with Bananas (2018)
like the poster said above, NPR has been scaring us with banana doomsday events for years.. I remember listening to NPR in 2006, preparing for the end of the banana
poisonarena··on Emotion in music, giving you the chills
does the addition of a soundtrack help you enjoy movies? surely that is part of the whole package.

poisonarena··on Did Ancient Egypt have a pigeon problem?
>This thing of considering pigeons 'rats with wings' does not exist in Mediterranean countries. People think that any major plaza should have pigeons. 'Rats with wings' seems to be an British or Angloamerican thing.

Thinking on this, in hebrew there is no distinction for pigeon and dove, i think in spanish also there is none.

poisonarena··on Ask HN: Great text based games to play?
I actually am from the box/manual generation and never heard it called 'feelies'.. I remember to register some games i would have to look up charts or keys in the manual, or on page numbers
poisonarena··on I went through a period where I loaned money to anyone that asked me
ahh I guess mine too, I was DJ'ing/LivePA from 2008-2011 at clubs all over SF. Seems like a lifetime ago. Was also the doorguy/email boy at Vessel SF when it existed. Was a really fun time to be in SF, I had a room at 16th + mission for 450 a month. I got to experience so many different types of weird nightclub culture, every from live electronic music, to weird burning man crowds, gay italo disco parties, hip hop/turntablism, marina and bridge and tunnel crowds at the mega clubs, and everything in between. I really enjoyed it all!

poisonarena··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
this really shined the light, thanks for this.. I find it strange how people would use this, it is a political art style or something
poisonarena··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
Thank you, I hate this.
poisonarena··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
I believe it is wrong to make people feel bad about themselves with insensitive or culturally offensive language but with every article I see like this I become less and less interested in thinking about what I say. Also why do all articles like this have the same art style? How do people get paid to make these kind of articles and how much do they get paid?
