plerpin··on Transmeta Crusoe
I knew a wannabe geek in high school who loved to brag about bullshit for nerd cred. My favorite lie was his boast about his dual core "transmeata crusoe" and how he morphed one of the processors into a 3D accelerator which made a GeForce unnecessary.
plerpin··on Quadriga was a fraud and founder was running Ponzi scheme
The CBC article doesn't go into enough details about Cotten's death, but it was almost certainly a fake too.

The Indian state which wrote his death certificate is apparently infamous for faking deaths in exchange for bribe money, e.g. for insurance fraud. Nobody saw the body. There was so much shady stuff that went down.

plerpin··on Plastic Rain Is the New Acid Rain
I think the amount of discarded plastic from water bottles dwarfs 3D printed filament by many, many orders of magnitude. There aren't that many 3D printers out there and each printer can only extrude so much filament per second.
plerpin··on Easily rename your Git default branch from master to main
Master/slave, OK, let's revisit those terms.

But this is a totally different context.

Should we rename a master's degree now? How about achieving mastery, is that now a loaded term?

plerpin··on Why the developers who use Rust love it so much
I've read the Rust book, maintained someone else's Rust code once, and written a few of my toy programs. But I find that idiomatic Rust is difficult to grok. All the constructs required for safety seem to obfuscate the control flow. There also seems to be a weird schizophrenic combination of imperative and functional styles in idiomatic Rust.
plerpin··on A New Cold War Has Begun (2019)
He plays those conservative wedge issues masterfully, though. It works.
plerpin··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes
Yikessssssssssssssssssssssssssss
plerpin··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes
I hope you are aware of Opera's corporate parentage.
plerpin··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes
Just use Ungoogled Chromium. Why suffer rent seeking crypto shenanigans?
plerpin··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes
Brave and Binance have a preexisting business relationship. Brave uses its own crypto funny-money and I think they even integrated a Binance-monitoring widget into the browser.
plerpin··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes
The commit creates a new class "SuggestedSitesProvider" which looks like a generic system for detecting pageloads and automatically inserting affiliate IDs. So perhaps this is a nascent revenue stream for Brave that will be applied to more sites than Binance in the future.
plerpin··on IBM Releases Fully Homomorphic Encryption Toolkit for macOS and iOS
I'm getting a kick out of these performance numbers. It's a common refrain on HN condemning $BIG_COMPANY for not using homomorphic encryption for $CLOUD_SERVICE.

With these performance numbers in hand, I'm finding those posts retroactively hilarious.

plerpin··on Signal app downloads spike as US protesters seek message encryption
If you really like having app-like websites, you can do that in Chrome by clicking "Create Shortcut" then click the box that says "Open In Window". Voila. It behaves like a native app, and you can embed it in your Windows taskbar with a favicon and everything.

Electron isn't as safe as Chromium. Last I checked it's based off a vintage build of Chromium with some very important features like the sandbox turned off (!)

plerpin··on Australian researchers set record for carbon dioxide capture
Am I reading this right? 1.29 megajoules for one kilo captured? Uh, this doesn't seem feasible at scale.
plerpin··on Ask HN: If tech cares about diversity, where's the discussion about civil rights
If you're looking for discussion between empathetic folks, this ain't the place. Discussions like that tend to be flagged for being too political, or they get ratholed in reinventing the wheel from idealistic first principles.
plerpin··on Google Is Not God of the Web
A lot of sites even download new content continuously even after the page has been fully rendered! They swap out silent media ads one after another, in hopes that you minimized and ignored the page.
plerpin··on Ask HN: I'm an incoming freshman to college for a CS major, what should I know?
Enjoy your college life. Socialize. Revel in the extracurriculars, don't treat them as an obligation to be endured. Join some clubs. Don't just hole up in the lab. Being well-rounded from your college experience will improve your life in many ways, your career being just one aspect.
plerpin··on SpaceX successfully launches two humans into orbit
I wouldn't take him at his word. Musk says a lot of shit in his tweets.
plerpin··on Sonder: E-Ink Keyboard
Professional applications, e.g. video nonlinear editing, have a huge number of shortcut keys. You can buy entire keyboards with colored key caps that are labeled with shortcuts for a single application like Final Cut Pro.

Would be great for that.

plerpin··on Ask HN: What was programming like before internet?
I taught myself programming. * Lots of grit. You needed it, to stay in the game when your shit didn't work. * Type-in programs from books, magazines (3-2-1 Contact). * Later on, buying big reference books. * Trial and error, lots of it.
plerpin··on SpaceX successfully launches two humans into orbit
The name felt like a nod to Iain Banks' Culture series, whose AI-piloted spaceships had pretty funny names.

plerpin··on Fuchsia overview
"Easily"? Some things can only be shipped as binary blobs. For example, you won't get open source audio drivers that support patent-encumbered codecs like Dolby Atmos.

Windows has a stable binary ABI which means that my drivers don't go stale when Microsoft pushes out a minor rev to the NT kernel. Windows does its updates and my peripherals [mostly] work just fine.

plerpin··on Fuchsia overview
I'm pretty sure Qualcomm not giving a shit about supporting their SoC is why my Android watches were practically EOL'd within months.
plerpin··on Fuchsia overview
Uh, that's how the BSD and Apache licenses work.
plerpin··on Fuchsia overview
Ah, the HN hivemind Markov chain is mired in another infinite cycle.

plerpin··on Fuchsia overview
You mean Mach?
plerpin··on The use of `class` for things that should be simple free functions
Put a FooHelper on it!
plerpin··on OpenSilver is a modern, plugin-free, open-source reimplementation of Silverlight
It played DRM'd video very well. Silverlight had a robust DRM stack.
plerpin··on Google removes over 5M reviews from Play Store to improve TikTok rating
I swear you could generate a 100% realistic comment thread from a Markov chain of those broad topics.
plerpin··on A No. 1 hit vanished from Poland’s charts – it’s not going quietly
A handcoded redirect to the error 500 page. A very hacky hack, certainly not an accident.
