plerpin··on Using government guidelines to police content: state censorship?
The thing that really bothers me about Weinstein's approach is that, while he and his wife are scientists, they're exceedingly quick to assert their hunches as scientific fact. They wear their scientist labels on their sleeves but their thinking is far more ideological. In a recent podcast about fluoridation in tap water, they were talking about how they avoid iodized salt, because iodine is a reactive chemical and you don't want to OD on it. Ludicrous. You'd sooner die from the sheer quantity of salt you'd have to ingest before the iodine even starts to become a problem.
plerpin··on Near, the emulator developer of bsnes, higan, and more, has died
"Evil triumphs when good men do nothing."
plerpin··on Near, the emulator developer of bsnes, higan, and more, has died
A black bar to commemorate the loss of a dear community member, with their death a warning of the real human cost of online toxicity and intolerance.
plerpin··on A backlash against gender ideology is starting in universities
At my university, the fratboys were far, far, FAR more disruptive than the LGBT groups. But we go with it; fratboy are an accepted pupal stage of American men it seems
plerpin··on Our latest updates on Fully Homomorphic Encryption
Really neat! This ought to be a Hacker News "why don't they just...?" holy grail. Now applying homomorphic encryption to solve privacy woes might actually be possible!
plerpin··on A few thoughts on Fuchsia security
Everything in a single process? Assuming that everything running on the computer is benevolent is a very "so 80s" notion.

Rust programmers use unsafe escape hatches all the time BTW.

plerpin··on Google to build new undersea cable to connect Latin America and the U.S.
It's vertical integration. As long as we're wishing for fairness I wish Apple would share those tasty M1 processors with the rest of the non-Mac world.
plerpin··on Apple’s tightly controlled App Store is teeming with scams
Their PR lets them have it both ways.
plerpin··on Bring back the station wagon
Toyota makes a version of the Outback, it's called the Venza. People ignore it and buy the Highlander instead.
plerpin··on The Google Nest Hub is first commercial Fuchsia device
It would be really interesting if someone could benchmark the performance before and after the transition.
plerpin··on Google Adopts Hybrid Workweek, with 20% of Its Employees to Work Remotely
I think that working from the office 5 days a week is on the table if your home isn't set up for remote work.
plerpin··on Microsoft shuts down Cortana on iOS and Android
I'm still bitter about the shutdown of Windows Reader.
plerpin··on Testing a few new designs that don't show the public dislike count
>The main obstacle is the bandwidth cost

...hence the ads? How would competitors be immune to the need to pay the bills?

plerpin··on AskHN: How much is Chrome and how much is Chromium?
It's not for lack of trying. Microsoft would love to get a taste, but their online products don't stick.
plerpin··on Show HN: CryptoTask – a 0% fee freelance platform powered by blockchain
Huh? What does that even mean?
plerpin··on Ubuntu Makes Flutter ‘Default Choice’ for Future Desktop Apps
I wish there was a stickied post feature to head off these sorts of RSS measuring contests.

Multiprocess applications, and especially multiprocess applications with really big discardable caches, are extremely difficult to compare apples-to-apples.

plerpin··on Lake Tahoe Property Sells for $1.6M in Bitcoins
It does not. Bitcoin is a commodity, not a currency, so you have to pay capital gains on any appreciation that you realize.

Active traders of Bitcoin have to track the bases of their lots so that they can pay taxes on each sale.

plerpin··on BitTorrent’s Bizarre Collapse
No mention of the acquisition by Justin Sun/TRON. Things got even weirder once crypto came into the picture.
plerpin··on Gameloft took down Marvel's SpiderMan trailer (11M views) with a copyright claim
A blockchain based storage system means that every participant will need to store every video forever in order to achieve consensus. If the blockchain uses URLs to external resources, then those can be easily be taken down.
plerpin··on Gameloft took down Marvel's SpiderMan trailer (11M views) with a copyright claim
A mechanism for regulatory compliance will probably err on the side of less exposure to lawsuits. They're stuck between a rock and a hard place, but the demands imposed by the government for copyright compliance are backed by a bigger stick.

Don't kid yourself, any other commercially successful VOD platform will have the exact same problem. A startup might squeak by under the radar for a while, but as soon as it gets critical mass, it won't be long before it gets encumbered by all this regulatory "fun".

plerpin··on Wirecard CEO exits as search for missing billions hits dead end in Asia
Ah, crypto and fraud, peas in a pod.
plerpin··on Microsoft says antitrust bodies need to review Apple App Store
What more proof could you need? In what universe would Windows' market penetration NOT be considered a monopoly?
plerpin··on Google bans ZeroHedge and The Federalist from its ad platform
Advertisers have always chosen where they want their ads to be seen, and what types of content they don't want to be associated with. That's censorship, now?
plerpin··on Proof of work algorithm in Monero based on random code execution
>Tether has everything to do with the bitcoin markets and the price of bitcoin, which is the only thing basically anyone is interested in.

Tether has become the proverbial suitcase of IOUs. The GP is outraged about the government stealing money through inflation, when the Tether printing press has been merrily siphoning actual USD out of the markets, a half billion at a time.

plerpin··on Proof of work algorithm in Monero based on random code execution
"Commodity hardware being competitive" isn't a desirable thing either? Remember when Ethereum caused a run on desirable GPUs? Miners were buying them by the truckload and locking them away in datacenters, where they basically computed hash collisions and made heat.

Personally I'd rather miners use ASICs for their hash collision wankery and leave the consumer markets alone. But I'd really like to see miners cease to exist because crypto comes with a huge environmental cost and so many externalities.

plerpin··on Popular Pirate Sites Slowly “Disappear” from Google’s Top Search Results
I believe they're legally compelled to remove them from the search listing. Write a letter to your congressperson?
plerpin··on Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chrome 85 address bar
Most sites use dynamically generated content with URLs that are essentially meaningless. The path for this comment thread in HN is "/item?id=23516088". A lot of websites append literally kilobytes of values to the querystring.
plerpin··on Flow browser passes the Acid tests
Your pages might have huge JS heaps allocated or contain supersampled assets.
plerpin··on High doses of ketamine can temporarily switch off the brain, say researchers
Not surprised, vets already have been using ketamine to anesthetize reptiles.
plerpin··on Transmeta Crusoe
With strange failures like that, I'm surprised the system even booted at all.
