pixelcort··on Reverse Engineering SimTower
One of the maps in Yoot Tower is Kegon Falls. When I moved to Japan I found out it was a real place. Just took another day trip up there last month. Of course IRL it’s just an elevator but the view each season is amazing.
pixelcort··on The legacy of the iconic Nakagin capsule tower
Yes there is a nice coffee table book that I keep in my living room!

中銀カプセルスタイル: 20人の物語で見る誰も知らないカプセルタワー(Nakagin Capsule Style)

pixelcort··on Exit Strategy: The Case for Single-Stair Egress
In Tokyo there can be one stairwell, and then the balconies have foldable ladders in their floors. How about that?
pixelcort··on Heat pumps of the 1800s are becoming the technology of the future
One of the Daikin models for Japan apartments/condos (known as mansions) has a tankless humidifier; it is able to condensate humidity from outdoor air and introduce it into the home. On a cold winter day it is able to raise the relative humidity from around 30% to about 45% or so. うるるとさらら is the name of their series of things that humidify.
pixelcort··on Terraform should have remained stateless
Can the git repo that the terraform config lives inside of serve as state? For example, one commit ago this part of config was there and now it’s gone, showing temporal intent that it should be deleted in real life as well?
pixelcort··on Launch HN: Azuki (YC W22) – All-you-can-read manga subscription
Exciting!

I live in Japan but prefer to read in English. However it seems your iPhone app is not available in Japan? Any plans to also provide your service inside Japan as well?

pixelcort··on Renoise – A DAW with a tracker-like interface
It seems DAW means digital audio workstation.

pixelcort··on A bank security check that leaves you guessing your own name
Japan's banks have a similar system, based on half-width katakana. Fortunately most banks can fetch the name from each other, but sometimes transfers fail due to issues similar to those found in this article.
pixelcort··on Some doctors moving away from ventilators for virus patients
ECMO machines can do this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extracorporeal_membrane_oxygen...
pixelcort··on Efforts to change the Japanese culture of extreme work weeks
There’s another rush hour between 9 and 11 pm.

Another way to confirm this is to compare with the morning rush hour. Way more crowded as most people start work at around the same time (most companies have a starting time of 9 or 10 am).

pixelcort··on Efforts to change the Japanese culture of extreme work weeks
Yes, and only for a plan to take ten days spread over three months. Apparently that’s bad enough for people to demand a resignation.
pixelcort··on Efforts to change the Japanese culture of extreme work weeks
One additional challenge that will need to be addressed in Japan is unreported overtime (サービス残業). Often my friends, upon preparing for a day off, will work about 8 hours of overtime beforehand and not report it on the time and attendance systems at their companies. From my understanding, unreported overtime is not always reflected in most statistics; even when self reporting I bet many people forget all the unreported overtime they do. Another example is rounding down: work 2.5 hours of overtime but only report 2.

I’m not sure what the solution is, but one idea is to lock out work laptops after a time limit, or at least record overtime when a work laptop is being used.

Until we can begin to accurately track and measure the unreported overtime, we won’t be able to improve it.

Finally, I think working in multicultural teams helps. When you see your peers have diverse beliefs and actions about work and life, you may be more willing to take more time off, and more accurately report the overtime you do take.

pixelcort··on HTML attributes to improve your users' two factor authentication experience
In the article they mention that:

> You definitely want to consider using these attributes if you are building a login form with the username and password on different pages.

pixelcort··on Pedestrian routing that offers pleasant alternatives to the shortest route
In Tokyo, when I have the choice between an above ground train or a below ground option, I tend to choose the above ground choice if I have time and it’s not too much slower. This way I can enjoy the view and avoid the subway tunnel noise. I’d love software that would factor these things in too.
pixelcort··on Stop Using Internet Explorer
I am able to load Shinsei in Chrome earlier this year, was this a recent change? Do you mean banking or another service?
pixelcort··on Enabling developers and organizations to use differential privacy
In addition to Differential Privacy, Secure Multiparty Computation is another way to maintain privacy, while allowing computation across multiple users.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_multi-party_computati...

The benefit of this is that you can get an exact computation, whereas with differential privacy the output is rougher.

The benefit of differential privacy is that it does not rely on the trust of a majority of other users; you can theoretically verify that a certain percent of the time your device sends out a wrong answer.

pixelcort··on Tokyo subway’s humble duct-tape typographer
Isn't this distorted by the amount of unreported overtime? Anecdotally many of my friends in Japan work overtime but don't report it, or report a smaller overtime amount.
pixelcort··on ‘Build More Housing’ Is No Match for Inequality
It is possible to buy housing in Tokyo without citizenship. You don’t even need permanent residency.

Source: I am a homeowner in Tokyo.

pixelcort··on There is no good reason to buy an inkjet printer (2016)
In Tokyo most convenience stores are within a few minute walk, and have printers and scanners. You can use a smartphone app to transfer PDFs to them.

If you print a lot, it’s probably cheaper to buy a printer, but I only print a couple times per year so I find it more convenient to use this.

pixelcort··on WireGuard for MacOS
Which APIs were only available via Mac App Store that prevented distribution outside it?
pixelcort··on Future JavaScript: what is still missing?
Yes, but a weakref by string or number would be quite useful for ORM caching.
pixelcort··on Could High-Speed Rail Ease California’s Housing Crisis? See Japan
Not to mention most companies in Japan will only pay for rail passes that are not Shinkansen, with limited exceptions. There are express trains that are not Shinkansen that can be used, so I imagine most commuters use non-Shinkansen everyday when compensated by their employers.
pixelcort··on Windows 10 will chew up another 7GB of disk space to make sure it can update
As an alternative, iOS seems to temporarily offload apps to make room during updates. Because all the apps come from the App Store, the apps can be easily redownloaded afterwards.
pixelcort··on Repl.it raises $4.5M from A16Z, Paul Graham, and others
In light of the recent post https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18269007 about LP funding sources, is there any insight into the sources of where the money from this round is coming from?
pixelcort··on Breaking bad news

pixelcort··on The Booming Japanese Rent-A-Friend Business
I'm living in Tokyo. There are a few companies providing these kinds of services. I get print advertisements in my mailbox weekly for them.
