Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!
A great community to be a part of, and much appreciation to those that oversee and contribute to the high quality and respectful discussions.
By losing the noisy/spamming/trolling posters entirely, we might also lose their constructive/valuable content too.
Since I was a teenager, in the vBulletin v3+ forums era, I've wanted to develop an access control / rate limiting system where moderators would be responsible for categorizing posts depending on the contents of the submitted posts and the user who created them.
On the other hand, I'm surprised how profilic certain people are. They get absolutely no feedback, but will go around trolling people several times a day.
If anyone notices an account that is banned that shouldn't be banned, they're welcome to let us know at hn@ycombinator.com. We don't want anyone to be banned if they've fixed whatever the original issue was and are abiding by the site guidelines (https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html).

We only use shadowbanning when an account is new and shows signs of spamming, trolling, or serial abuse.

That's why we added the vouching feature many years ago: so users can identify and restore the valuable comments made by banned accounts. See https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html#cvouch.
That's why showdead is great! (The checkbox in your profile to unhide flagged and other 'killed' posts.) Not clear on if it unhides IP banned posters though. And I would like to try a forum that let you toggle it by category (IIUC Slashdot has post categories, though it peaked before my time and I don't know if they're used for that).
Happy Holidays! I second the gratitude for all the work by dang and the rest of the HN team. Well done and thank you!
I’ve been (rightly) chastised by dang, though generally I try not to troll. (Sorry to those I’ve been a troll too)
For the most part I don’t know a better place to have discussions of the kind you can have here.
Happy holidays, and Merry Christmas if you’re so inclined, and a happy new year!
Preach. Same here. Took me a while to fit in but dang was always correct in his rebukes to me.
Major thanks to the HN community and those who keep it running!
Happy Holidays!
It's insanely impressive, and I'm incredibly grateful that this community exists.
To put everyone in the proper mood, here are the Commodore 64 Christmas demos: https://rittwage.com/c64pp/?pg=xmas
Not sure how you all see it, but in my experience people rub off on other people. We are, to some degree who we hang with. I choose to hang here because I am better for it, and say that unabashedly! So many of you have had an impact on me, some small, some larger than you will know.
Thank you all for all the bits of knowledge, perspective, curios, life stories, experiences and more! These are the things I am better for. I see many different kinds of voices, ages, stations in life here, and appreciate that we all share a little bit of our time and ourselves. It's both worth what you paid and priceless!
Been a tough couple of years for many of us. May you and yours grow and prosper, laugh, play, build, love, explore and live well and long into the future!
@dang & Co. -->You should feel good about what this little place on the Internet is. Thank you and others behind the scenes who remain willing to insure it continues to exist. Seriously appreciated.
I'm an undergrad dabbling in software development. I don't remember how I stumbled upon HN but I'm so glad I did! I used to search randomly for good articles, links, resources, tools, books, etc. And HN is a treasure trove of those.
Heck, I use HN Algolia as a search engine! Want some resources about SQL? Search for "learn SQL". Want to know about a software? Search "caddy" and know in-depth opinions.
And the discussions. Even reading the comments feel so insightful sometimes.
I can't even comprehend how the top-notch moderation is done. It just makes me go, dang, that's amazing.
People here care about simplicity, performance, minimalism. People here care about making, learning and growth. They care about privacy. They are critics. They are skeptics (in a good way). People here are experienced. It is always so surreal to me when I see a news like "Y gets N Million Series F" and the CEO of Y is just waiting in the comments like "Hey HN! x here, happy to answer any questions :)".
Obviously there are trolls, people who spread unnecessary negativity but it's again refreshing to see them downvoted to opacity: 0;
All in all, I'm really grateful for HN, the people in it and its /moderators?/. I'll continue to use HN as what it is for me. A place to seek resources, insightful content, fun tools, advice, rational discussions and constructive opinions.
Thank you, HN. Happy holidays to you and your families!
I found some pretty cool articles and discussions with it.
P.S Wish the next iteration allows for multi touch!
I was debating pulling my phone out wondering if playing with multitouch would be worth it, but definitely had to double check after reading this.
Yep, this version doesn't support multitouch! Can only agree that would be much much more interesting.
I hope that this time of year grants many of us the opportunity to take a step back and reflect on our shared humanity.
In the thousands of years that human civilization has progressed, we have had some bad ideas and some good ideas. I think of Christmas as a time of year where we can all, regardless of our religious views, appreciate one of our best ideas: that we can all find it within ourselves once a year to sacrifice something... anything - our time, a little spare change, a friendly gesture or even just spreading some festive cheer, because we want to do something nice for someone else and make their day just a little bit better.
May your days be merry and bright.

Get off the internet and go spend some time with the family, so there's more bandwidth for me.
This corner of the internet is always a great source of motivation and discovery, and suprising amount of insight.
Happy holidays to all HN-ers and to their close ones.
And now for the traditional airing of grievances...

I like watching The Snowman this time of year, and the 1982 version with the original introduction is my favorite:

Feliz Navidad a todos!
“Now they are all on their knees,”
An elder said as we sat in a flock
By the embers in hearthside ease.
We pictured the meek mild creatures where
They dwelt in their strawy pen,
Nor did it occur to one of us there
To doubt they were kneeling then.
So fair a fancy few would weave
In these years! Yet, I feel,
If someone said on Christmas Eve,
“Come; see the oxen kneel,
“In the lonely barton by yonder coomb
Our childhood used to know,”
I should go with him in the gloom,
Hoping it might be so.

And upvotes for all!
Besides that, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!
there's so much doom and gloom, and I probably spend too much time in r/collapse and similar subs but it's nice to at least sprinkle in some hope.
I think we'll die fast if we rely on politicians to fix all our issues. the people here in HN are some of the brightest...
I'm hoping to see more stories about people in tech starting cheaper housing initiatives or starting some sort of worker co-op that is self sufficient but also helps people have better alternatives to Amazon and Walmart and current health offerings..

Start small. Who is paying attention to you, at all? Give them some kindness. It will grow.
Someone else suggested therapy - don't shy away from that if it's something you think you could benefit from, mens mental health is something we can proudly talk openly about nowadays and is as important to manage as physical health. Venting to someone in person could really help.
Hope things turn around in the new year :)
