philposting··on Apparently Google hates us now
Agreed, especially as with images it does the opposite. It waits until the image is finalised, then tests it for suitability, and decides whether or not to show it. It would be interesting to see the intermediate steps, but they're not shown.
philposting··on Tiled Words 6 Month Update
An excellent game, with a great UI. Thank-you.
philposting··on Rare concert recordings are landing on the Internet Archive
Never heard of that usage (I'm also British).
philposting··on The anxiety driving AI's brutal work culture is a warning for all of us
> Lokuhitige says he works seven days a week, 12 hours a day

The app he's making[1] is an AI-driven notebook for fiction writers. Not changing the world. I don't understand the dedication.

philposting··on The HP-35: Consumer Electronics, an Origin Story
Anyone know why it was called the HP-35 if it was the first?
philposting··on Fragile GPS is a vulnerability for the West – and Putin knows it
But a new optical quantum clock may be the solution.
philposting··on Are We Transitioning from Capitalism to Silicon Serfdom?
I'm not so sure that the internet has improved productivity — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Productivity_paradox
philposting··on Every default macOS wallpaper
A lovely app -- downloaded!
philposting··on Every default macOS wallpaper
It's nice to use software, or anything really, where effort has been made to make it beautiful as well as functional. Also it's good to support and highlight good photography.
philposting··on Millennium Bridge workers hang straw bales after ancient bylaw triggered
I met him on this bridge once, he was polishing an old work. He told us that he had the blessing of the owners of the bridge. Other places where he worked, he didn’t have permission.

Yes! English isn't always a great language... I do like the meaning behind it though. You are a brother, even if not in biology, we'll embrace you. It just doesn't work well for genealogists.
philposting··on Why does email development have to suck? – Explaining all the <tr>'s and <td>'s
Agreed. If things look good then I enjoy looking at them more, and life is to be enjoyed. But more importantly, it's wrong that plain text is always the best way to communicate. A picture is worth a thousand words (often), and a good layout can make things easier to read.
philposting··on List of APIs that require declared reasons
Speaking from a user point of view, I find arguments like this are often disingenuous (I'm not saying that yours is). "Tailoring for the user" normally actually means "tracking the user". Specifically, the passing of UTM parameters from my website session to my app session is something that normally has no benefit to me and I find it repugnant that developers feel entitled to do it.
philposting··on The ad-based internet is dying, and it's getting worse in the process [video]
I've recently used Axate (www.axate.com) on a news website. You top up credit, and then pay per article.
philposting··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
I'm in the UK and have used Krystal for years. Great service, great support. I have no affiliation with them.
philposting··on International Orange
The back button also breaks for me on macOS Safari.
philposting··on Mamihlapinatapai, Most Succinct Word
A good song about the word, by Ronny Cox who played the police chief in Robocop: https://ronnycox.bandcamp.com/track/mamihlapinatapei
philposting··on The dark defaults of Microsoft Edge
It looks like it's getting currency exchange rates from the IMF, not phoning home.
philposting··on Night Train Map with all regularly served night train destinations in Europe
I clicked to look at the highres version... and I really don't understand why websites feel the need to put PDFs behind an interface. Every common browser has a perfectly good PDF viewer built-in, in fact it's normally better than anything website-provided.

Am I missing something?

philposting··on Hardcoded Folder Icons in macOS
Try: defaults write com.apple.finder NSWindowSupportsAutomaticInlineTitle -bool false, then killall Finder
philposting··on Understanding how Facebook disappeared from the internet
I explained it as Facebook the city still existing, but they'd taken down the signposts.
philposting··on macOS in Svelte
That's not true, for many people. If you increase choices then people often feel less happy.

Having more varieties of mayonnaise at the supermarket doesn't necessarily make us happier--it just forces us to expend energy choosing, or worrying that we've made the wrong choice. If there's just one variety then we don't have that issue and we're probably happy with the mayonnaise that we get.

philposting··on Apple now lets you transfer your iCloud Photos to Google Photos
I used https://www.raidrive.com/ which lets you mount Google Photos as a (read-only) drive in Windows.
philposting··on Apple now lets you transfer your iCloud Photos to Google Photos
There’s this nice app: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/exporter/id1099120373?mt=12
philposting··on Apple now lets you transfer your iCloud Photos to Google Photos
Probably not from their online service, but unless you switch on “optimise local storage”, all of the files are already on your local disk in JPEG or HEIC.
philposting··on Look Up Unknown Phone Numbers Using Facebook Reset Password
You can install WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, with a number on each. WhatsApp business has some extra functions for businesses, but is otherwise the same.
