philg_jr··on Samsung Foundry Forum announcements
I might be excited about a Samsung phone if it didn’t have a lame version of Android on it.
philg_jr··on Norway to hit 100% electric vehicle sales by early next year
Corvette vs Model S is kind of a weird comparison, especially with the weight comparison. One is a coupe and one is a sedan.

Maybe compare the Model S to an M5 or E63?

philg_jr··on Tesla Wanted $22,500 to Replace a Battery. An Independent Shop Fixed It for $5k
The tire needed to be replaced regardless, and no shop around me had the exact tire in stock, so I would have had to wait and I needed to be able to drive safely (without screws in my tire) for work travel requirements. Most shops won't give you a discount on a single tire anyway, and Tesla's price on the tire was cheaper than Discount Tire Direct on eBay. The fee to replace the tire was $20, which is in line with a normal tire shop (mounting and balancing 4 tires is usually $60-80 in my experience).
philg_jr··on Tesla Wanted $22,500 to Replace a Battery. An Independent Shop Fixed It for $5k
I took option to have the Tesla mobile tire service come to my house. I had several screws in one of my tires, and one was too close to the sidewall to plug. The guy in the van showed up to my house and had the full tire removed/mounted/balanced in about 15-20 minutes. I had to pay for the tire and service fee (obviously) but it was incredibly fast and convenient for me. I found the whole process impressive.

philg_jr··on Florida will fine social media companies that bar candidates
The only useful purpose of Facebook for me is using it as a somewhat modern phone book. It’s a great tool for tracking down old or new acquaintances and establishing a line of communication. It’s kind of what Facebook used to be before the newsfeed and like button. I wish there was an alternative to Facebook without the tracking and advertising, run by something not profit seeking. Maybe an organization like NPR or PBS?
philg_jr··on Internal Combustion Engine
Yep. Jealous. Best of luck on the build!
philg_jr··on Internal Combustion Engine
Damn, dropping a new engine in a CTS V? What year? NA? How much power are you shooting for? The CTS V is definitely one of my favorite cars, I'd love to own one one day, but the ones with the manual trans hold their value pretty well :)
philg_jr··on Ask HN: What will be the future differentiator in electric vehicles?
Be prepared to be impressed. I got myself into a '21 Model 3 LR and the acceleration puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. And this is from someone with a very heavily modded 4-cyl turbo car with a medium frame turbo and 20psi. 340 ft-lb is nothing to scoff at when it's on tap instantaneously. I really want to take a Model 3P for a test drive, I wish I knew someone.

And the Model 3 has been around for 4? years now? The fit and finish I'm guessing has improved greatly, but I really have no idea. I ordered and picked up mine without ever test driving one. I guess I put a lot of faith in it, but I love it. No regrets. Bring on the electrification of all vehicles. Can't wait for an electric pickup truck.

philg_jr··on I built ByteDance's censorship machine
Follow journalists who have domain expertise in technology?

You can use a shitty news article about a particular relevant topic that contains some questionable issues, and then search around for people that actually know what they are talking about.

Exert some of your own effort to find good sources. Don't trust the first thing you read. This is ultimately the problem imo.

philg_jr··on Parler Tricks: Making Software Disappear
I mean, you could just open up your favorite web browser and go to any website you'd like. Why is the lack of an app on the App Store or Play such a major hindrance? Well, I know why it is, because most people have been conditioned to associate every service with an app. But really, it shouldn't be a major roadblock.

Also, not totally related this this article, but I also don't understand why Parler didn't have a backup DR plan. All of the major cloud platforms have outages. What is stopping them from renting a few racks, or cages of racks, in a datacenter with multiple Tier1 peers? Sounds like they didn't plan very well honestly.

philg_jr··on Slack wanted to stay independent, but was unable to compete with tech giants
Free? Office365 isn't exactly free. Its arguably the new/better (subjective, I guess, both kinda suck) version of Skype for Business.

Slack is actually free to use (last I checked), if you don't care about the chat history.

philg_jr··on Psilocybin and migraine: First of its kind trial reports promising results
A close friend's father uses Psilocybin to treat cluster headaches. He dealt with these debilitating headaches for a long time, basically unable to function as a normal human. This is in the US, and he is a former small business owner (retired), with money, and was able to see numerous specialists, attempted many treatments, all of which were unsuccessful. I'm not sure how he figured out that Psilocybin is an option.

Psilocybin is the only thing that relieves his cluster headaches for months at a time. I believe he doses 3ish grams of dried mushrooms, once a day for 2 days. I hope this gets more attention now that some states are decriminalizing Psilocybin. I suspect that other substituted tryptamines would be helpful as well, without needing to digest lots of mushroom fiber (which can be hard on the gut unless you fast for a period of time before consuming them). 4-HO-MET and 4-AcO-DMT comes to mind.

philg_jr··on Remove auto renew from my account
Capital One also has a browser extensions for this, including Firefox. Every time I come to a payment form on a website, it pops up and asks if I want to search for existing card numbers that match this site. If it finds one it will automatically populate the fields or ask to generate a new card, and then automatically populate the fields. I use it for everything.
philg_jr··on Adolphe Sax, Inventor of the Saxophone
If anyone is curious about some modern fusion of EDM and the saxophone, check out Big Gigantic (Dominic Lalli, tenor sax) and GRiZ (mostly alto sax). Seeing either of these guys live is more fun than I can describe. Also, Lalli put out a jazz album recently with a few other musicians, "A Blind Man's Blue".
philg_jr··on The survival of the airlines depends on frequent flyer programs
Interested in your story about being in your early 20s and lucky enough to "largely fly private"
philg_jr··on The survival of the airlines depends on frequent flyer programs
The only people that I know that actually receive real value for their "points" are: 1. Business travelers who fly internationally or coast-to-coast regularly 2. Business owners who regularly put very large business purchases on their cards, especially AMEX cards that don't have a real limit. When you put $50k/mo on your Delta AMEX, you'll probably never have to pay for a personal flight.
philg_jr··on How China’s Expanding Fishing Fleet Is Depleting the World’s Oceans
Salmon is general is a bad fish to farm because it consumes more protein than it produces. There are better fish (in terms of sustainability) that can be famred, and proper regulations (which the US has, compared to other countries) exist to help. In general, I don't believe the US is the problem with overfishing or polution problems caused by fish farming, compared to other countries who don't have or want the ability to keep things in check.

So he is worth $82B now? Do you think he really loses sleep over that? He knows this is temporary and the stock will most likely bounce back.
philg_jr··on Zuckerberg: advertisers will be back to Facebook 'soon enough'
Unfortunately, this model invites a lot of the "fly-by-night" type of companies offering products that may or may not have been thoroughly tested, but they know their target market may be easily manipulated through professional looking ads (eg young/naive people or people who don't know the wealth of data they give to FB to allow precision targeting).

Just one example: Molekule

philg_jr··on Why the US military usually punishes misconduct but police often close ranks
Same with eastern PA, Bucks County comes to mind. A friend of mine teaches middle school, has her masters degree, and makes north of 100k. The property taxes in Chester Country, Delaware County, and Bucks County definitely reflect the salaries. The schools in those areas are generally pretty good, I've heard.

philg_jr··on A detailed look at the router provided by my ISP
Typically, FTTH doesn't require a "modem".

In my case, I have VZ Fios in the northeast US. Their termination point at my house has an RJ45 Ethernet connection. It goes directly to my pfSense router.
