exit the x86 market, enter the vertically integrated server hardware space, this is insane.
why aren`t they spending that over a quarter of a billion dollars on building better cpus/gpus. not trying to become some sort of ibm.

.. but the web slides are cool
LUA is just one tool in the tool box - its not the tool box.
Yup yet I remember when ppl were complaining how PS2/Xbox games x10 game budgets and all hell was breaking loose with the industry doomed. These days iphone/android have technical constraints on par if not more so xbox/ps2 thus making a highly polished game on a phone hell of alot cheaper than AAA console title but still not something you can do in your basement.
Guess my question is what type of game would you start out with? AAA level phone game with 80H+ of gameplay and 10 levels will cost a lot to develop and no one will play past the first level, or pay more than $5 for - IMHO ofcourse :)
whats your current thoughts on the "gaming market" these days, so much has changed since the console under the TV ruled the earth. e.g. if you were to start all over what/where/how would you spend your time?
...this aint no FB/Google/blah.1M.requests.a.minute datacenter - its the latency not the thoughput that matters.
1) you live in your own personal reality. what you see/understand/think/etc others cant and what others can you dont. when you get this, it completely changes your perspective on communication.
2) readup and learn to identify the different general personality types. and understand how they view the world
3) you dont need permission from anyone. not your mom, your boss, your friends/peers/gf/spose etc. if you want to start a company, JFD. want to travel JFD. want to change jobs JFD. life is too short so beg for forgiveness.
4) dont seek out approval. meaning dont please your friends/peers/gf/spose/boss/clients to get a pat on the head. dosent mean be an asshole and dosent mean do do nice things for people. i means dont do things to seek their approval
so if you think your code/models/you are top shit... then its really easy to get a reality check on your percived abilities. its what makes it fun. all the bullshit and hand waving in the world is FUD against your PnL
what would be interesting is a back of the envelop calculation on # lines of js vs c executed globally per minute. id guss c probably wins due to frequency of execution.
im going get downvoted like hell for this but saying all finance jobs are soul sucking cushy jobs is like saying your startup, yes YOURS, is the next google/facebook/twitter/blah
.. certainly not easy to kick sugar/bread/milk habit.
lua is not a one stop shop and will never be, which probably why it flys under the radar so much - you cant stamp a powered by lua logo on it.
guessing you cant do this with a compile to C style implementation.
Guess it depends on whats the advantage of doing this is? just for fun? or for a serious practical application.
Granted I hate C++ with vengeance my poison if choice is C99 + LUA which creates a really powerful lowlevel and high level combo. Using lua to drive it, farming bits out to C, instead of the opposite "scripting language addon" approach. Yeah lua isnt quite as powerfull as lisp but gets pretty close and dosent look like alien space talk to new devs.
... and as we all know its far easier to attack geeks than other more politically astute sections of the industry
so.. a double blow, the great recession and the new decade of retirement, its a slow fade to #4 or #5 in world GDP.
