pharos92··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
1. This is why kernel modules are a bad idea 2. This is why centralism is a bad idea 3. This is why sacrificing stability for security is a bad idea 4. Security still needs to factor in security of supply - not just data safety
pharos92··on Show HN: NetSour, CLI Based Wireshark
It kills me every time I see a link to a github project that sounds promising, but there's no screenshot.
pharos92··on Microsoft laid off a DEI team, DEI is 'no longer business critical'
Correct.
pharos92··on Microsoft laid off a DEI team, DEI is 'no longer business critical'
Funny (and also great) how these ideologically insane and unproductive cultural trends are the first to fall to the wayside once the economic conditions worsen and interest rates rise.

I don't like being gas-lit by my employer. I prefer the honesty that they only care about money. That way we all know where we stand.

pharos92··on "Out of Band" network management is not trivial
I disagree, Out of Band Network Management (OOBM) is extremely trivial to implement. Most companies however don't see the value of OOBM until they have a major fault. The setup costs can be high, and the ongoing operational costs of OOBM infrastructure and links is also significant. I've built dozens of OOBM networks using fibre and 4G with the likes of Opengear. In instances, often deploying OOBM ahead of infrastructure rollouts so hardware can be delivered to site directly from factory, rather than go through a staging environment which adds time, cost and complexity.

AI needs to be put back in the box and buried.
pharos92··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
This entire case was a catastrophic show of hand in how the justice systems across the west have been weaponized and used against the values it proclaims to protect.
pharos92··on Fedora has been shipping with a broken screen reader for nine years
Aral really comes across as a class-a douche.

pharos92··on GPT-4o
I really hope this shit burns soon.
pharos92··on Show HN: Brewer X, a native macOS client for Homebrew
Agreed, the plethora of overpriced non-essential apps with shit pricing models that cream "one-off" and "as-a-service/updates" models really irk me. I just flatly refuse now.
pharos92··on Apple Removes Game Boy Emulator iGBA from App Store Due to Copyright Violations
Glad I downloaded it today, knew it wouldn't last.
pharos92··on Linux fu: getting started with systemd
Yep. Needlessly complicated and completely dev-centric, it looses sight of the goal. Pretty hilarious, as the whole argument for outsourcing infrastructure to developers was to make delivery faster, simpler and easier. What a joke.
pharos92··on HP Enterprise to acquire Juniper Networks for $14B
Yeah that's what I'm alluding to. Juniper has GREAT foundations, but it's failed endlessly to innovate. It needs the leadership and financing to innovate to realize its potential.
pharos92··on HP Enterprise to acquire Juniper Networks for $14B
This is really sad news for the networking industry. HPE is not the innovator Juniper needs and deserves.
pharos92··on Intel CEO laments Nvidia's 'extraordinarily lucky' AI dominance
Luck had nothing to do with it. Nvidia is still at its heart an engineering company.

Intel was (and is trying to become again, an engineering company). It was run far too long by bean counters and business executives too far removed from engineering.

Tech development is not kind to incompetence. Now that shipping times for AI related hardware are out beyond year in many instances, the incumbent players have dominance - a position they're unlikely to loose for several years.

pharos92··on Saudi Arabia Is Trying to Block a Global Deal to End Fossil Fuels
Bye plastic, bye modern goods, bye technology, bye datacentres, bye freedom of transport. People really don't understand what they're wishing for.
pharos92··on IMF says central bank digital currencies can replace cash
Gross
pharos92··on Gen Z is giving up on college
Make money, yes. But it's hard (in a corruption free environment) to make money without providing a level of value.
pharos92··on Gen Z is giving up on college
It's a real shame that cost has significantly outweighed the value derived from high education.

It's in the interest of business to continue to add value and explore new territory. Unfortunately though this has metastasized in higher education to producing junk degrees and programs that simply do not warrant costly or even sometimes formal training.

High education has evolved from something accessible only by the elite, or the brightest (elevated on the dime of the elite) to an overpriced commodity that yields little returns. Especially in undergrad, is the cost really worth it to achieve a basic level of competency that employers then have to build on significantly after the fact?

My advice to young people in my home country (not USA) is only go if the profession you want requires it. And I'll often help them to do a cost-benefit-analysis to work out if college is the right path.

pharos92··on Israeli democracy is fighting for its life – Yuval Harari
Ironic given Yuval's association with a multitude of anti-democratic organizations.
pharos92··on The iPad Pro Is a Disappointment
Can't say I disagree. I've had an iPad Pro since the new form-factor came out (2018 I think?). Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful device but it's just not that useful.

On the road its ok as a lifeline device, but no more useful than an iPhone. In bed, it's awkward and needs constant holding to watch something.

To be honest, the BEST thing I've found it useful for is cooking... It's small, relatively risk-free of getting water in it. And the backlight stays on perpetually when you're mid-recipe.

Beyond that, Safari mobile SUCKS. Not having extensions is excruciating.

It's the device I want to love, but it's sat on the shelf 98% of its life. Which is why I haven't updated it. And it's such a shame. I even bought a keyboard case for it, which is again basically pointless.

pharos92··on Netflix loses 1M users in Spain over password policing
Assuming $20/month, that's just under a quarter of a billion in lost revenue.
pharos92··on Apple passwords deserve an app
100% - the current method of access (via settings) is so nu-intuitve. A real sign of the state of Apple over the last few years. Customer UX needs to become front-and-centre again.
pharos92··on Poste.io – Complete Mail Server

pharos92··on Ask HN: Has anyone ever seen a UFO?
Summer 2013 traveling Amtrak up the coast from San Diego to LA. Off the coast not far from San Onofre plant I saw a small silver disc darting around at incredible speeds in the distance.
pharos92··on Pulling MikroTik into the Limelight Demystifying and Jailbreaking RouterS
Are you using the images available from FriendlyElec? I have limited trust in them.... Been struggling to find a good image except for DietPi.
pharos92··on Amazon putting a three-day pause on reviews for Rings of Power
Casting choices and politics aside, the intro was weak, the story lacked grip and the characters were all unlikable. It doesn't even feel like Tolkien. As a huge Tolkein fan, it feels like yet another betrayal (just like The Hobbit movies). I'll give it the benefit of doubt for another episode or two, and if it fails to improve I'll give up.
pharos92··on Hackable $20 Modem Combines LTE and Pi Zero W2 Power
