peterbraden··on Agentic Coding Recommendations
I have tried both, and aider is far less able when it comes to navigating your codebase, and self driving investigation. You are very involved in context management with aider, whereas claude code can use cli commands to do a lot of things itself.
peterbraden··on Mikeal Rogers has died
Shit, never expected to see an announcement that a friend had died through HN. Learned a lot from you Mikeal, you will be missed.
peterbraden··on Designing Electronics That Work
Apparently the ebook has “sold out” so this is just marketing for the new paid ebook preorders.
peterbraden··on Gassy cows and pigs will face a carbon tax in Denmark, a world first
What is propaganda? I was asking for a proper carbon model, not a link to an opinion piece.
peterbraden··on Gassy cows and pigs will face a carbon tax in Denmark, a world first
Thats not really what I asked.

But in this situation would you not be better off taxing the soy imports and fining waste outflow?

peterbraden··on Gassy cows and pigs will face a carbon tax in Denmark, a world first
Are there any reliable numbers on the holistic impact of ruminants? All of the carbon they emit came from the atmosphere via their plant diets, and a huge volume of that carbon is sequestered in the soil via their excrement. Ruminants help the soil, as opposed to modern agriculture which is largely reliant on fossil fuel derived fertilizer.

I have yet to see a paper that models this. Most of the estimates are purely based on output, which seems disingenuous at best.

peterbraden··on Live Map of Swiss Trains
Looking at this from a swiss train. It seems to be 10-15 minutes out of date compared to GPS.
peterbraden··on Philips Hue will soon force users to create an account
Does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement bridge that works with home assistant? It seems I’ll be throwing out the hue bridge and never buying a phillips product again.
peterbraden··on Bicyclists Deserve the Right to Free Movement

peterbraden··on Dropbox telemetry can't be disabled
I'd love to be able to get rid of it completely, but I don't know of a good solution for syncing files to an iOS device from a linux machine.

Recommendations very welcome!

peterbraden··on IKEA made a smart air quality sensor to track indoor pollution
The SCD40 series is a pain to calibrate - it will drift out of calibration unless it's left outside at some points. It's not ideal for consumer electronics.
peterbraden··on Plant-based meat is turning out to be a flop
Where are you shopping? It’s not even close to that at migros.
peterbraden··on Ask HN: Is Vim still worth learning?
I don't think that's true. There are precious few UI guidelines that persist, and GUI design has been on the forefront of many fads. Looking at the touch-first UI of today, I have very little confidence that a GUI will look anything like it does now in 10 years.

Meanwhile, I can use vim over ssh from an iPad if I need to - my tools have come with me.

peterbraden··on Ask HN: Is Vim still worth learning?
Yes definitely. Vim will be around for the rest of your career, long after VSCode or other IDE's have come and gone. Investing in tools and workflows that are properly open source, and have serious longevity has a big payoff.
peterbraden··on The value of owning more books than you can read (2018)
At that scale you might solve the carbon sequestration problem
peterbraden··on Essential Climbing Knots
Definitely, it’s such a satisfying knot to tie too. And after that perhaps the figure 8 on 2 bights (bunny ears).

But then we are into the weeds…

peterbraden··on Essential Climbing Knots
These are decent for climbing, but for the rest of life you also want the bowline, which is easy to untie after being loaded.

Ring bend should only really be used for webbing.

peterbraden··on GitHub deleted accounts of people who contributed to Tornado Cash repos
So what if the company you work for requires github?
peterbraden··on French mayor demands €15,000 fee to climb Mont Blanc
If they can't manage to get people to be well equipped before tackling the peak, what are the chances they are going to be able to enforce a permitting system?

Honestly, as someone that has climbed Mont Blanc twice, what is necessary is not more red tape, but to actually enforce the current equipment rules at the Gouter. And based on the importance that mountaineering brings to the area, it wouldn't hurt to go and knock down the loose rock in the Gouter couloir.

peterbraden··on Spain bans setting the AC below 27 degrees Celsius
> 40 was off the charts.

peterbraden··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (August 2022)

    Location: Zürich, Switzerland
Remote: Strongly preferred, CET or similar.
    Willing to relocate: No
Technologies: Generalist, so whatever is necessary for the job at hand. Rust, javascript, typescript, python, golang, etc etc...
    Résumé/CV: https://peterbraden.co.uk/resume/
    Email: recruiters@peterbraden.co.uk
I'm looking for a full time role as either a full-stack developer, or a software team lead / manager.

I have 15 years of SWE experience, primarily with front-end development, but also backend, management and product management. I like to solve problems, so I'm more motivated by the goal than the tools at hand.

peterbraden··on Eating meat is good, says the philosopher
Actually the article is asking whether a good but curtailed life is better than no life at all. Which is a more interesting question.
peterbraden··on Building a fast all-SSD NAS on a budget
What do you use to mount this on a mac? My bottleneck with my NAS is the atrocious speeds I get over samba or NFS, and even after spending a ton of time messing with the configs, I can’t get more than sluggish speeds.
peterbraden··on Why rails buckle in Britain
or just paint behind the robot
peterbraden··on Jennifer Egan's Fiction and Visions of the Future
Finished Candy House recently and found it fairly mediocre. She seems to prefer writing about people than thinking through the consequences of the technology she introduced, and as a result, the Sci-Fi aspects feel awkwardly bolted on to the story, rather than having any real consequences to the people in it.
peterbraden··on A single prophylactic 200mg dose of Doxycyline prevents Lyme disease
But all of this caution is negated by feeding cattle antibiotics as a matter of process on feedlots.
peterbraden··on Show HN: Personal AI Writing Assistant for Mac
This seems to violate many of the OpenAI release guidelines (I am currently working on guiding a project through them, so am painfully aware of their stringency).

Notably it:

- Anthropomorphises the AI agent

- Claims 'actual' intelligence

peterbraden··on Breaking PCBs for Science
Bleh, Imperial measurements (and how confusing is it to refer to ‘mils’) and the conclusions are hidden away in a PDF.

Not a great read.

peterbraden··on Ask HN: When did 7 interviews become “normal”?
Maybe better to look at the definition of asian than white, Asia includes the subcontinent.
