pavelkaroukin··on The Real Story On That "Antidepressant Surge"
for me drugs are like monkey patching - really cool way to quickly fix things, but it is addicting and can lead to huge mess in the end. Instead we should build system to make sure long term system operate well.
pavelkaroukin··on Ask HN: How can I self-evaluate my programming skills?
Never stop coding. Look back each 3/6/12 months at code you wrote back then. If it looks as cool as it was 3/6/12 months ago - you stuck. If it looks like shit - you are on a right track and right speed.
pavelkaroukin··on Being recruited in the USA
Visa cap was a problem during 2006-2008. Starting from 2009 it became much slower. (for example, in 2008 whole main h1b cap was taken with in 1st day of april and even between these who "took" it there was a lottery. On the other hand, for 2009 visa cap was used only in September)
pavelkaroukin··on Being recruited in the USA
obviously off-topic, but could you please clarify (and may be post some links?). Does this means, that if I now cancel my greencard and leave usa back to my home country, up to 2022 usa irs will have some rights on my income?
pavelkaroukin··on I am done with the freemium business model
He should be done with freemium business model for this one particular business instead. It just do not fit it.

May be try to send e-cards for free and offer to send similar physical card for a fee?

pavelkaroukin··on Belarus Makes Browsing Foreign Websites a Misdemeanor
I bet there were many reasons, but it boils down to being able connect virtual entity to a physical entity. No matter if this is competing business, or this is opposition reporter.

Officially they say they use it to prevent illegal activity. But in reality government just want to know who doing what in internet.

ps: in this sense it quite similar to all recent USA bills and "this is to protect our children" moto :))

pavelkaroukin··on Effective DoS attacks against Web Application Platforms
It is funny how this site was DDoSed by getting to the first page on HN :)

pavelkaroukin··on Department of Defense Makes Move Towards Android
That's good to hear. Maybe one step at a time government will come to idea of using open source software everywhere. Working with government organization I see how deep proprietary software is embeded into this sector. This comes with two problems:

- Shrinking budgets. As result - no support and crappy websites. (and I bet desktop apps as well, we just do not see these)

- Very hard time with open sourcing software developed with public funds (read - our taxes). Because most of the time software delivered in compiled form and vendor not obligated by contract to give full rights or source code on it to governmental agency paid for this work.

Good news - this happens slowly not only in defense, as in this example. Few governmental agencies managers start to pushing to open sourcing work done for agency. Which for me means mental shift happens.

pavelkaroukin··on Online Pawn Shops Lend Cash Fast
I would not be so sure about credit cards. I was in search for basic credit card when just moved to USA to start my credit history somewhere... I was offered credit cards which are:

1) Secured. I.e. I have to have whole credit line amount as a cash on CD with the same bank.

2) Annual fee is 50% of credit limit

3) standard APY 37.5% and penalty APY even higher

4) Credit line - less then $500

And I bet this one was not worst one.

pavelkaroukin··on Expect Longer Battery Life with Ubuntu Linux 12.04
It is quite true. A lot of hardware today require drivers (ah.. I remember days I hated software modems 'cos without drivers these were useless, and now this is normal). And most drivers are proprietary. And on top of it - often hardware is being customized by OEMs requiring even more spcialized drivers.. And of course, nobody bother with doing drivers for Linux...

This is a case with my new Dell Precision M6600. It have on-chip GPU and discrete GPU. I still trying to find a way to switch to integrated GPU. And this one of the areas Ubuntu 12.04 should fix (well. To be exact, not Ubuntu, but kernel included into this distribution).

Just from witching from external GPU to internal GPU I expect to bump battery-time to ~6 hours from current 3 hours.

pavelkaroukin··on Should You Pay to Pitch Your Startup?
>> But yeah, you would be keeping out 12 year old me, which is fine. Personally, I would think that the majority of people at these events would be past that point. dono.

Judging solely on all rage I see about costs associated with giving a speech at such events, I can see how it might filter non serious people. I am not saying that $50 or $8000 is right/wrong. I am just saying - it is filter. Even small bump in requirements tends to filter out non serious people.

Here is simple way I look at it - if you can remove 5% of total noobs and get $1000 to spend more on marketing materials, why you shouldn't do it?

pavelkaroukin··on In case SOPA passes: IP addresses of popular websites
Please, adopt Namecoin. There are already open source DNS servers available I believe. :) Using google document or hosts file do not scale at all, while namecoin now have all hashing power of bitcoin thanks to merged mining.
pavelkaroukin··on Vim for developers that use other software, too
I tend to customize VIM with plugins and .vimrc file. But to keep environment the same everywhere - I am using git with github. Works pretty well.
pavelkaroukin··on Vim for developers that use other software, too
Use right tool. If you notice you slide into textmate/sublime/eclipse - then it means you use right tool.

For me VIM became main tool when I started to work in multi server environment where all access done through SSH. I could use my most favorite GUI editor Kate to edit files of SSH, but it was less effective due upload/download required.

Do not try to force some tool in your workflow. Instead try it for new tasks/projects and see if it fits naturally. I.e. you should be always aware of other existing technologies, but not forced to use these just because some think it is cool.

pavelkaroukin··on New Blender 3D with Motion Tracking, new rendering engine, dynamic paint
For me all these features says nothing (probably like "clojure" word for CGer). But to just get a glimpse of what these people do - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Q... - It is just incredible!
pavelkaroukin··on Nvidia GPU enabled machine learning and linear algebra in R
Anyone know something similar, but for more universal OpenCL platform?
pavelkaroukin··on Feds want nationwide ban on cell phone use in cars
I was quite surprised coming to USA to find out that only "text" part from cell phone usage by driver is banned. Unfortunately, human brain is still not evolved enough to be able to concentrate on the road conditions and on the conversation over the phone (for most people I've seen. I bet there are person who handles both simultaneously very well).

Nor autonomous cars are spread enough yet.

So I would say banning phone is good measure for now.

pavelkaroukin··on Women (and everyone else, really) should do startups
Well. Sounds about right. For some people having ownership is what makes their day. And that's why they join start ups. It is much harder to get ownership of something in more traditional company.

There are many exciting things in many areas. I am glad someone find their job at traditional company exciting - this fulfill two very demanding parts - financial stability and fun.

Start-ups offer different thing, but core reason why people join these is the same - they like what working in start-up gives them. :)

pavelkaroukin··on Women (and everyone else, really) should do startups
Do you like what you actually do at your job? If yes - this is ideal job.

If no - that's what people going after when joining start-ups.

pavelkaroukin··on Should You Pay to Pitch Your Startup?
I am not a founder looking for an investment (at least, yet), but $50 in USA does not sounds bad for a lean start up. It act more as a filter than as an income for event host IMHO. Founder probably will spend more on a hotel alone.

On the other hand, practice of not disclosing fees and charging in the range of $1.000 - $8.000 definitely look shady.

Just my .05

pavelkaroukin··on Wordless: stop writing Wordpress themes like it's 1998.
I was wordpress hater for two reasons - messy templates and messy plugins. This hate came from my "consulting" days when I often had to fix and add more features to existing wordpress websites.

Nice to see someone investing time into building rigid structure for templates... (Although it looks like a bit too much for me :)) But probably it worth learning Ruby, Haml, Sasl, coffee-script, etc)

Now if someone could come up with something very defined for plugins and make somehow all "wordpress programmers" use it for both templates and plugins - word could be better :)

pavelkaroukin··on Stanford on-line Data Mining Courses ($10k for a certificate)
Your approach (result-driven hiring) work well in small organization. In big organization certificates simplifies and standardize hiring process.

I am not saying I support it, I am just saying this is being used and if student aims to work for big company, he probably better invest into this piece of paper.

pavelkaroukin··on Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) released
unity... ability to install and run 32-bit apps along side with 64-bit apps - is what huge! :)
pavelkaroukin··on I quit my job last March and it was a bad idea.
i got my full time job when i was 26... i failed a lot as "self-employed" before. but when i got job (i had specific reasons, not financial ones), i really understood what it is to be free in doing your own choose and be entrepreneur (life style, not building huge corp for selling it later). now i am doing everything to get back to it...

do not afraid to fail early. i did it a lot - it is fine (although i never had situation where i was not able to pay taxes or rent, but this might be luck :)). With each fail you learn and it is better to learn it at twenties and become successful businessman in thirties, than start learning in thirties. :)

there are few exceptions from the rule, who become successful "overnight" (think facebook-type businesses), but most "overnight" success takes years of work, dedication and... failures.

pavelkaroukin··on Team Fortress 2 in WebGL
Yeah. And that's where it moves - centralized hosting, with ability to quickly iterate through in-game and software changes. With ability to access it from (in future) any browser. I definitely like it.
pavelkaroukin··on Team Fortress 2 in WebGL
So.. It looks like we are going to direction, where browsers will be used to play action games in (probably, not really near) future.. Same direction mobile development..
pavelkaroukin··on The Coding Interview
It depends a lot on what company actually do, but lets be honest - not so many companies out there need some tricky algo implemented. Most stuff already invented and you, as programmer, have to know when to use what, how it should work together and what is approximate complexity of two or more algos, which could be used in particular situation..

Why I am saying this... In most cases (unless someone interviewing me for position where I will be developing "nanobots to build house on Mars"), if interviewer will ask me to write actual code on real white board.. i will pass this position no matter how big or cool or both this company is.

My memory and attention have better use then memorizing particular syntax of particular language, particular code of particular sorting algorithm, etc.

pavelkaroukin··on Perl 5.14.2 is now available
If you still consider Perl, I recommend checking out: Plack, AnyEvent::*, Catalyst/Dancer (depending on required complexity) for web stuff.

Perl libraries made a huge leap forward. And for me it was unnoticed.

pavelkaroukin··on Lulzsec fiasco - from HideMyAss VPN provider
for some reason i sympathize this team, but really.. if you are so high profile hackers group, why use mostly-legitimate-use vpn service when you can buy:

1) vpn service hosted in the bot net (i.e. on zombies machines)

2) hosting on the bot net (i.e. one you can not stop at all, you can not track it)

These "services" quite possible to buy and they are not really expensive. The only downside is link speed which should be pretty slow keeping in mind that bots are hosted on regular home PC on adsl/cable internet connection..

pavelkaroukin··on One Million Concurrent TCP connections
I believe this comes from how FTP protocol works which do it to some extent and the reason why it do not work trough firewalls well without using passive mode.
