pavelkaroukin··on Why Quit? Because the other company has bigger monitors.
This article wasn't about equipment. It was about external signs about culture. You can use whatever you love, be it iPad, old MB or Dell workstation with Windows on it. Whatever get job done.

But if company not willing spend money (quite little in the long run) on equipment - this is a sign that this place is bad for engineers since management value engineers less than equipment.

pavelkaroukin··on Bitcoinica hacked. ~$100k USD stolen.
you guys don't get it. if such a high profile hacks happens - it means it worth a lot!
pavelkaroukin··on Redditor: Am I a scumbag for automating my manual work and making more money?
His purpose - get as much money as possible here. And get it now, 'cos tomorrow it might not work, since someone can come up with same idea or bonus rules will change or something else.
pavelkaroukin··on Yahoo CEO might have lied about having CS degree
He got to the CEO position not because he had a CS degree. So it is totally fair to get that kind of compensation.

On the other hand - it might be totally fair to be prosecuted for doing this... :)

pavelkaroukin··on EU court: Reverse engineering OK, API not protected by (c) and more
I do not think it will work. If, just for example, Amazon decide to copyright their API and keep their business in USA for copyright protection, another company, who decides to replicate Amazon's API fully will just do it in Europe. Customers probably will not care, since it is internet. Only possible downside here - latency between USA and Europe.

pavelkaroukin··on Young File-Sharers Respond To Tough Laws By Buying A VPN
I believe many here have some sort of VPS or dedicated server. Just setup VPN and use it. Just use it. Installing pptp server is very easy. And if you are more determined - install OpenVPN - it allows compression and better security.
pavelkaroukin··on Drupal will become More MongoDB Friendly
I though you were talking about multisite, but what you are talking about much likely can be done with third-party module - Domain Access (and related ones) - http://drupal.org/project/domain
pavelkaroukin··on Drupal will become More MongoDB Friendly
i am not quite sure it is right fit. sql and nosql are so different, that "rewriting" module to connect to mongo will just give support, but not actual benefits, IMHO.

I see only one case where it might be beneficial - integrating with another app which already use mongodb. Otherwise it would make more sense to create new nosql based CMS leveraging all nosql features instead.

pavelkaroukin··on Drupal will become More MongoDB Friendly
drupal already do it starting with version 5.x (current stable one - 7.x)
pavelkaroukin··on Cooling computer servers with oil
why this should cause any issues?
pavelkaroukin··on Easy cloaking with superconductors and magnetic tape
it is not easy and it is not in visible light specter.
pavelkaroukin··on agentzh's Nginx Tutorials
I see this as valid reason. Although, did not see difference on ubuntu and windows. What browser + OS you use?

While this is a reasonable explanation, I see many cases where system fonts set wrong and as a result an unstyled page look terrible.

pavelkaroukin··on agentzh's Nginx Tutorials
Fix your browser/OS default font settings. This page have 0 styling and page with 0 styling should look perfect on your screen if you have everything configured correctly.
pavelkaroukin··on Open-plan offices must die
about headphones - i hate these somehow. I am ok to use these while riding bike, when I wait in line, or working in coffee shop, but nothing is more pleasuring and actually helping concentrate like closed office with speakers playing Infected Mushrooms.
pavelkaroukin··on The joy of Perl
Perl 5 also changed a lot since then. And it is definitely not just duct tape anymore (if it ever been)
pavelkaroukin··on Poll: How does alcohol/smoking affect your thinking?
In my particular case I did not have much of alcohol. Also I was struggling with doing this task being sober for a few evenings. It's not an "asap" and it was always second priority thing.
pavelkaroukin··on Poll: Do you test your code?
Do not include testing into bill. It is quite confusing for somebody outside of software development and I find their comments about jr. developers quite reasonable. Just put number of hours or amount to cover development and writing tests.
pavelkaroukin··on Poll: Do you test your code?
For projects I am doing on my own (albeit, these are quite simple, just fun ones) I am doing TDD approach.

It is really natural to me, because part of developing idea is a research. It often includes doing some test of how particular library works, what format of data expected, etc. I always was finding myself doing small isolated programs/scripts to test specific question I have about it. And now it was so natural to start using TDD approach.

As other commenters noted, due migration of much logic to JS (client) side, testing it together with server app might be a challenge. For my particular case I "solved" it by using V8 library. I am developing with Perl language and there is great libraries available on cpan. V8 and pure Perl ones. I am using V8 for performance reasons (doing encryption), but before I used pure Perl JS library and it worked perfectly too.

So if your language of choose have libraries to hook into one of JS libraries, I would highly recommend to try to include JS tests into application tests kit.

pavelkaroukin··on Blueseed: Visa-free startup platform on a ship 30 minutes from Silicon Valley
I believe it does. I think I seen at least one UK-based YC funded startup.
pavelkaroukin··on Uncle Sam: If It Ends in .Com, It’s .Seizable
this is not really a name, it is generated key/address/whatever. namecoin allow you to choose name, where in hidden service subsystem you can generate one (although, you probably can setup key generator to get desired name... like vanity bitcoin addresses..)
pavelkaroukin··on Uncle Sam: If It Ends in .Com, It’s .Seizable
But why US population stands censoring in form of seizing domain then? I think you overestimate "US population". It is not a walmart censored, it is some gambling website.
pavelkaroukin··on Uncle Sam: If It Ends in .Com, It’s .Seizable
if we are talking about P2P DNS only, it is more like "namecoin". Tor do not have anything like DNS. You can have local directory, but it is more like /etc/hosts
pavelkaroukin··on Uncle Sam: If It Ends in .Com, It’s .Seizable
seizing .com is like a censor. while I do not believe in efficiency of censoring, I agree every society have right to do it. But it should not affect other societies. So correct measure would be direct all US-based ISP block access to bodog.com, not steal IP from canadian company.
pavelkaroukin··on Top LulzSec hackers arrested, group leader reportedly working for FBI
Friend of friend of friend told that somebody he knows was arrested in Europe and extradited to USA with fraud charges. Initial sentence prosecutor was asking was something like 30-40 years. Recently I find out that this guy's sentence was reduced to 8 months for cooperation with FBI (and on top of it he have to reimburse some pretty significant amount of money to US government or something like that)...

So... Not that bad if you start cooperate with FBI. I would expect most of LulzSec gang to be disclosed pretty soon (except ones, who had enough wise to not disclose their private info to this guy from article)

pavelkaroukin··on A single tweet page is 2.0 MB
And it is funny - AJAX-related technologies were promoted exactly to make sites more lightweight and more responsive..
pavelkaroukin··on Compromised Linode, thousands of BitCoins stolen
I do not believe implementing something like you describe is viable right now.

Although, AFAIK, bitcoin 0.5+ support keys encryption. I am not sure if this available only through GUI or through API as well, but even if it is not available through API, it might be good idea to implement.

pavelkaroukin··on PHP 5.4.0 released
I see a lot of mentions of zend in extension names, function names.. Could someone elaborate how Zend relates to PHP?
pavelkaroukin··on Perl Unicode Cookbook
this particular site uses browsers defaults. calling this lack of consistency is wrong :)
pavelkaroukin··on Perl Unicode Cookbook
code snippets tends to be long. so they have font-size: 65% for <code>

I've found increasing font is required anyway, since my browser default font size a bit small for my screen resolution.

Increasing font size is quite easy in most browsers. Hold Ctrl key and use mouse wheel to adjust size. This is per-site setting in most browsers I believe.
