paulintrognon··on PHP is worth learning and using
Have you heard of Nest.js? It's the laravel of JS, and I can assure you it is rock solid.
paulintrognon··on Jimmy Wales’ Final Email
I kind of agree with the article, but on the other hand, I don't think I would I have ever donated without their aggressive campaign... Or I maybe would have once and then forgot about it. When I receive their email I'm like, "oh yeah! I should donate, totally forgot in a long time."
paulintrognon··on Ask HN: Any indications Copilot scans your local files?
> you are making use of tools that upload the intellectual property [...] onto third-party servers?

That's the whole point: if they did, it was NOT willingly: they have the intellectual property stored in a completely separate folder, which should not be uploaded to Github.

paulintrognon··on It’s time for Americans to buy less stuff
That would hurt the poors while the wealthy would still be able to buy loads of stuff. Maybe a tax that would become bigger the more you buy? Like, the more gas or electricity you consume, the more expensive it gets per unit? But it would be very hard to implement I guess..
paulintrognon··on Is nuclear power our best bet against climate change?
> Comparing with coal burning plants is nonsense, compare to wind/hydro/solar on a long enough timescale rather than to compare with the most polluting fossil fuel.

Well Germany is replacimg part of nuclear energy with natural gas plants so it is a really important debate indeed.

paulintrognon··on Mozilla to put ads in Firefox address bar suggestions
They do that because they need money. Why can't they just ask for money? Can't we just have a healthier business model: you want a good product that cost money to develop, just pay for it?

It could be a freemium model: users paying for premium features (Sync, VPN, ...) support the company, for example.

paulintrognon··on Clinical trial shows that the use of Vitamin D supplement improves sleep quality
You can emulate this effect via Dawn Simulators
paulintrognon··on Intergalactic jump inspired by science-fiction movies
haha true! There's even a demo in the tutorial with the exact same effect, as well as others: https://tympanus.net/Development/InfiniteTubes/index3.html
paulintrognon··on Lab-grown meat may never be cost-competitive enough to displace traditional meat
With this rethoric, you cant rule out lightsabers either. Or any science fiction stuff at all.
paulintrognon··on DuckDuckGo Is Now Carbon Negative
From the article, they say that they are Going Carbon Negative. But they are not there yet (because it is technically not feasible yet). A more accurate title would be: "DuckDuckGo Is Going Carbon Negative"
paulintrognon··on Coal replaces wind as most important energy source in Germany in H1
>> Also, if there is a major accident, it is not the power companies or their investors that will pay the cost, it is the tax payers and the rest of society

Same goes with, say, hydropower. If a dam breaks and flood a region, the tax payers will pay. Are you against hydrolic dams ?

I obviously not saying that we should phase out dams, what I am saying is, nuclear power is one of the safest energy we have, funnily enough[0].

paulintrognon··on American Medical Association: Remove Sex from Public Birth Certificates
For those who want to fact check. It was not the whole Shooting category but only Skeet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_at_the_1992_Summer_Ol...

> It was the last Olympic skeet competition open to both men and women, and the only mixed shooting competition at the Olympics ever won by a woman: Zhang Shan.

paulintrognon··on Your idea is brilliant, your idea is worthless (2016)
What I do is I explain to them the concept of MVP and tell them to come back with specifications for one. Noone ever came back yet...
paulintrognon··on Hydrogen fuel cell cars (2020)
No energy is green. Not a single energy source does not require some mining / oil extracting at some point. We have to choose the solution which impact as little as possible the environment on global scale.

paulintrognon··on Show HN: Less Addictive YouTube – a cross-browser plugin
I love those kind of plugins. I myself use Unhook[0], which works really well.

paulintrognon··on iOS 15 Humane
How do you explain, with a such simple solution, that there are still billions of people using facebook? Are they just stupid?
paulintrognon··on Real-world CSS vs. CSS-in-JS performance comparison
Why the downvotes?
paulintrognon··on Real-world CSS vs. CSS-in-JS performance comparison
You can address points 1 and 3 via (s)css modules.

But point 2 and 4 stand.

paulintrognon··on Wi-Fi packet capturing on M1 Macs is broken
I think that is just your opinion, and not objective truth. I am a happy debian user, currently forced to use macOS at my current company, and can't say I have a great time developping on a mac. As a web developper, Linux is great: native docker, native linux terminal experience...

I however think this is a personnal opinoin, and I won't argue that Linux is better that macOS. If I has been a macOS user from the start I would have maybe been equally unhappy to be forced to use Linux.

What i'm trying to say is, we are all different people with different tastes and priorities, and I don't think we can objectivly say that one OS is better (or "sucks the least").

paulintrognon··on SpaceX wins contract to develop spacecraft to land astronauts on the moon
Genuine question: why are we going back to the moon? Is it really the best way to use public money? What are the gains?
paulintrognon··on The Norway Problem
I am sometimes annoyed by the fact you have to put double quotes around string properties in JSON. It would be so much lighter to use JS syntax..! Then I read articles like this one. Thank you JSON for not trying to be smart.
paulintrognon··on Bronze Age mining sites received deliveries of pre-processed foods
The Fall Of Civilization's Podcast on this subject is also a great introduction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B965f8AcNbw

(Generally speaking I really recommand this podcast, it has been recommanded on HN before, which is how I first heard of it)

paulintrognon··on Bill Gates Says that Bitcoin is bad For the Planet
As opposed to external non-human controlled factors, such as meteorites, I suppose.
paulintrognon··on Ethereum Isn't Fun Anymore
Isn't cryptocurrencies used all over the Darknet ? I know that is not "the masses" but it is still a non-negligeable usage which is unlikely to stop, no?
paulintrognon··on Central Spain records temperatures of -25°C after snowstorm
*climate change ;)
paulintrognon··on Slack is down
It's already being discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25632346
paulintrognon··on Vercel raise $40M Series B
Where would those DBs be deployed? I mean, can vercel host DBs or do you still have to figure out a way of host them yourself?
paulintrognon··on Elderly patients 23% more likely to die if surgery is on the surgeon’s birthday

paulintrognon··on Reddit is buying TikTok rival Dubsmash
That might be a dumb question but why all companies are trying to grow outside their core product? From what I see from the comments, all previous attempts from Reddit to extends to new domains have more or less failed. Shouldn't they just invest and focus into making their core product better, slicker, faster, instead of absolutely trying to conquer new territory?
