patd··on Google+ continues battle with fading user interest
The circle feature, while nice, makes it look like a ghost town.

I don't put people that are not on G+ in my circles so when they sign up, they see an empty feed. Facebook knows that you need a minimum amount of friends in order to find the service useful. With G+ and the circles, this threshold is higher and more difficult to reach as there are less users.

patd··on Why the Lumia 800 is the first device I would switch to from an iPhone
Aren't those arguments very US-centric ? If Windows phones sell well in Japan and in Europe, they could attract developers.

They are already marketing it heavily in Japan and Nokia is a European company.

patd··on Kindle Fire demand surpasses iPad ahead of launch, could be a threat
The ~$200 price point is indeed a huge differentiator. The main lesson from the HP TouchPad fire sale is that people are interested in tablets but $400+ is too expensive.

With the ~$200 price point and the Kindle and Amazon brand, this could be real competition for the iPad.

patd··on Firefox 8.0 is Released
My last addon release was reviewed after a little over a month.

They do however do automatic check to ensure that your addon still works with newer releases and upgrade the compatibility automatically.

patd··on European Union leaders announced a write down of Greek bonds by 50%
Maybe it's because other countries could follow the same path. Greece isn't that big but if the other PIIGS fail to pay, it could be much more than a few billions.
patd··on Show HN: My midweek project - karmurl
http://feedbackroulette.com already does something very similar.
patd··on Samsung buying WebOS? I wish they would. It's great.
The CEO of Samsung denied it: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-09-02/samsung-electronics...

But HTC could be interested: http://focustaiwan.tw/ShowNews/WebNews_Detail.aspx?Type=aALL...

patd··on HP To Apple: You Win.
But if HP is become an entreprise-software company, why would they want to keep updating WebOS as a end-user software for smartphones and tablets ?

Licensing only makes sense if HP puts his weight behind WebOS as a good alternative to iOS and Android.

patd··on Think Twice Before Installing Any Chrome Extension
I think they should make a separate extension that implements this feature. If it's really an itch that needs to be scratched, people will install it.

But I doubt it will be as popular.

patd··on G+ invite open again
I've shared links with friends. Most of them got invites even though I didn't have any Invite link on the UI.

But it looks like this doesn't work anymore.

patd··on Show HN: I created a Chrome extension that reveals HN's hidden comment scores.
Just out of curiosity, why the 5 days restriction ?
patd··on Show HN: Chrome extension to compare prices in France
Hi HN,

This is the MVP for Shoptimate.fr / Shoptimate.com, the project I've been working on lately. My goal is to make price comparison pain-free. The first step is this Chrome extension to compare prices while you shop and tell you if the same product can be found at a better price somewhere else. Monetization is obviously made with affiliate commissions.

I'm focusing on France for the moment and Shoptimate will support more shops in the future and other cool features. If you're interested you can also check www.shoptimate.fr / www.shoptimate.com or follow @shoptimate on Twitter.

patd··on How to hide Ryanair
A lot of non-tech people don't type any URL, they just type "Ryanair" in Google and click on the first link.
patd··on Noticias Hacker, like HN but in spanish
On top of that, I think that a startup built for the Spanish speaking communities would get better exposure in a Spanish-language HN.

patd··on How Much Money I Made From Side Projects In 2010
Let's just ask this the other way around. What would he gain from people knowing how much he makes from that app ?

On the other side, I think that some people, seeing he is making some money, would feel he's charging too much (or something else). It may not happen, but why take the risk ?

patd··on Geckoboard: “It’s Chartbeat For Everything Else”
This reminds me of what beebole.com wanted to do. They seem to have pivoted from that idea.
patd··on Poll: Where do you work (geographically)?
Go Belgium !
patd··on Ask HN : Which opensource project for beginner python developer
Find a project that you already use or that you like that supports plugins. Write one plugin and learn by looking at other plugins.

On the top of my head: deluge (bittorrent client) emesene (MSN client) XBMC (media center)

If you're a Gnome user, most applications support Python plugin (Nautilus, GEdit, ...)

Shameless plug on my part, you could make a plugin for my open source project called periscope. It downloads video subtitles from various websites http://code.google.com/p/periscope/

patd··on Introduction to Gnome 3
Canonical has and pays UI design experts. I don't know if they're the best, but I remember going to a conference given by one of them a few years ago at the FOSDEM.
patd··on Market research for startups with limited resources
This is my first blog post ever, so I welcome any kind of criticism about it (length, tone, subject, ...)
patd··on Dear Google: please let me ban sites from results
Maybe something more automatic : a user makes a search, clicks on a link, if it is spam, he'll probably hit the back button within a couple of seconds. The average time spent by a user on a result before going back to Google could be used a as metric of quality.
patd··on Why I'm not buying Facebook
"Reason 2 : Goldman has likely earned the lead book runner slot in any initial public offering."

When Microsoft valued Facebook at 15 billion, it was the same thing : they paid 240 million for 1.6% of the company AND running ads on Facebook (while excluding Google) AND some other things we may not know.

But people just said 1.6% for 240 million = 15 billion without taking other parts of the deal into account.

patd··on Googler Paul Adams Heads To Facebook
For what I've read, Google is becoming too big and some people complain that things aren't moving as fast as they once did.

Facebook is still younger, the teams are smaller, they still have to take shots at new ideas that will generate the revenue stream they need.

But I'm sure that money is also a big part of it, with crazy valuation numbers, being paid in stocks could turn some of the new recruits into millionaires.

patd··on Open Web Analytics
Anyone has tried this and www.piwik.org and could tell us what are the main strength and weaknesses of those ?
patd··on Software Patents Shut Down RunwayFinder
To be fair, it says "potential lost sale" :

Each visit represents a potential lost sale of our client’s patented invention at $149 per sale

patd··on Microsoft - Goodbye To All That...
But comparing it to desktop apps, mobile apps or console games, I would still say that web development has made it easier to do cross-platform development.

Sure you've got to support IE6 (mainly if you do enterprise stuff), but in desktop apps you have MacOS, Win7, WinXP, all Linux flavours. You can't make a cross-platform game (handheld or console). Mobile apps are divided in iOS, Android and probably WinMo7, webOS, RIM, ...

patd··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring? (December 2010 Edition)
Louvain-La-Neuve, Belgium - Babelway

We're looking for a XML/Java developer. No remote.

patd··on Google's Current Bid for Groupon: $5 Billion.
Isn't the difference just that Apple excels at marketing while Google sucks at it and know it ?

Google would be acquiring a great marketing team by buying GroupOn. We'll see what Apple is going to spend its cash on, but it could be something that Google already has or could replicate easily but Apple can't generate on its own.

patd··on Announcing Browserling: Interactive cross-browser testing in your browser
