patatino··on CircleCI Security Incident – “Rotate any secrets stored in CircleCI”
What a fine word "rotate" is in this case
patatino··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
The average number of interviews at any company increases to 10+
patatino··on Ask HN: Experienced devs, what language would you learn today?
Typescript and rust pretty much covers everything. Also a lot of jobs and I think increasing a lot in rust
patatino··on Ask HN: How do you deal with HN FOMO?
I use https://www.hndigest.com and get top 20 topics daily
patatino··on Ask HN: I have 24 hours to prepare for a job interview – advice?
Prepare for the two most important questions:

- Why are you a good fit for our amazing company?

- Where do you see yourself in five years?

patatino··on Tell HN: You can get into YC without a product
Why on earth would you want to get into YC with a product like that?
patatino··on The SPA Dilemma
I use react, because that's what I'm best at, and I also use it in my day job. Also most jobs in react, so it makes sense for my cv too.
patatino··on Dear Twitter, thank you for suspending my account, otherwise I'd gladly pay $99
Always remember, the other person could be a 14 year old. Would you argue with them in real life? I don‘t care what people write online
patatino··on Ask HN: Is the world going to shit?
I have two daughters, and when I look at history, I am pretty glad they are born in the last couple of years and not 100 or 50 years ago.
patatino··on Quiet Quitting
Quiet quitting is not working until you get fired. Doing your job and nothing more than that isn't quiet quitting.
patatino··on Why Disconnecting from Your Phone Is So Good for You – and How to Do It
Been thinking about this aswell. I have kids, so I wanna be reachable.

I have all notifications already turned off on my phone. But the internet and a browser are enough.

Has anybody successfully reduced phone use with a smartwatch?

patatino··on Ask HN: How do you deal with varying levels of competency in your team?
> It's often small things, like making what's being build more configurable / hard coding less, abstracting differently so code is more reusable.

I am the exact opposite. I learned that it just adds complexity and usually not going to be reused much anyway because every case needs something a little different, and then you had to build this complex thing which isn't worth it.

patatino··on Ask HN: Coding music playlist to increase code throughput
I prefer silence, the less noise the better.
patatino··on Ask HN: If you could have your tech team know one new thing
Which headless CMS do you prefer?
patatino··on Someday aliens will land and all will be fine until we explain our calendar
It's a joke, get over it
patatino··on The Ethereum merge is done
It didn't eliminated 0.2% of gloabal energy usage, it moved it.
patatino··on Ask HN: What is the coding exercise you use to explore a new language?
I don't think a try-this-language-project makes sense. Just build what you wanted to build.
patatino··on Ask HN: How do you and your spouse handle big income differences?
We are a family and a team. We need money, we need someone taking care of the kids. Who cares who does what. It doesn't work if we miss one part. No part is superior
patatino··on Why do arrays start at 0?
My 4 year old starts at 0 when asked to count, so proud! Never said a thing about starting at 0.
patatino··on Ask HN: Anyone working 4 day week here, as an employee?
At my previous job I was up for a raise and negotiated to reduce to 4 days (32 hours) and keep my full salary. That was a good day.
patatino··on Ask HN: First-time dad-to-be. What do you wish you'd known back then?
The baby likes to sleep on the father and mother. Yes, sometimes you would wish you could lay it down always to sleep. Try to enjoy it, because it lasts only 3-4 months. I enjoyed it way more on the second kid.

Everything goes in waves. There are good ones and bad ones. Try to recognize you are in a good one and enjoy it. And in bad ones, remember it will not stay that way. It gets better.

patatino··on Ask HN: When were the tech skeptics right?
One of the main problems is that crypto projects start with an absurd valuation of what they could become in 10 years. We never had something like that?

If you make everybody rich in a company from the start, very little motivation and innovation are left.

patatino··on Ask HN: Why are there so many companies trying to reinvent the terminal (badly)?
Dev tools are hot currently, VCs like it. That could be a reason
patatino··on Ask HN: How different is it to make an Android app vs. an Apple app?
Apple user spend more money, I always guessed that's the reason.
patatino··on Ask HN: Experience Leaving Software Engineering
There is also the possibility to optimise for free time.

- Get a remote job

- only work four days. Look for one with very little meetings.

- do your real work 4-5 hours a day, go for a walk, a run, whatever during working hours

Show me another job where I can make 100k basically working 16-20 hours a week.

patatino··on Ask HN: A Dumb Database?
I would recommend supabase, used it in my side projects, couldn't be happier.
patatino··on Ask HN: How do you deal with life altering decisions?
>should I go and live the USA or stay in India? you could always move back?

> How many children do I want to have You decide after the first one if you wanna have a second. After the second if you wanna have a third.

You can't plan everything in advanced

patatino··on But life had other plans
I know two cases when people gave up trying to conceive, they got pregnant naturally.

One was doing IVF, the other hormone therapy. Both needed a break and both got pregnant in this break.

It makes you think how much stress and mind play a role.

patatino··on Ask HN: How do you organize your private work with apps?
Just stuff which I do not need day to day but still wanna keep somehow.
patatino··on Only 0.3% of the world population are programmers
Well, it sounds like a lot to me. Many do not work at all. Kids, older people, etc. So working people that would be like double? Also many many more in IT in general.
