paolomaffei··on How many legs do ten elephants have, if two of them are legless?
I laughed when I read the substraction of 0 legs for each legless elephant. Then I did a double take... 8 legs per elephant is standard?
paolomaffei··on Ask HN: How are you dealing with the job market anxiety?
Had a permanent role (mid weight) level before, applied for contracts. Nothing special!
paolomaffei··on Ask HN: How are you dealing with the job market anxiety?
Personally I've seen quite a few of up and downs in my market (UK contracting), this might be a bit longer than usual, but not a permanent situation.

An encouraging sign I'm seeing is that there's more permanent positions advertising higher salaries than in the past (maybe just the +20% of inflation from march 2020, but still!).

The market will change again... software is still eating the world, there will be shortage of SKILLED developers for the foreseeable future. And even if I need to make 25% less of what I used to at the peak of pandemic hiring, it's not that bad really!

paolomaffei··on Leaving the Phone at Home
About 2 years ago I found myself once more checking my phone while on the toilet. I decided that was enough, I don't want to be an addict.

Since then, all my devices (phones, laptop) now stay in a specific room of the house: the office and they never leave

If I badly need GPS to get somewhere I take the dumbphone with me, the phone with the apps simply never leaves the office. But I'll look up the road before instead unless absolutely needed. If I need to meet someone I tell them be on time where we agreed to meet, I won't have a phone with me

It's scary to notice how as soon as there's a phone in my pocket the old addiction kicks up

Absolutely gold suggestion. This might just be the future for most internet-connected device use, and particularly for children/supervised use like you're describing.
paolomaffei··on Launch HN: Clearspace (YC W23) – Cut back on screen time
Hey this is great and something I started on working myself. Just a note that if you pin the extension on the extension page itself it gives a very, very confusing message of "SuperFocus works on Youtube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram.

SuperFocus is not yet available for dboceidahklphhjpfbpnicodnbkoiokn."

thought it was a bug before I realised that must be the chrome extension id, but it's quite likely people will first open the extension on this tab as that's where you teach them to pin it

keep up the good work!

paolomaffei··on Launch HN: Clearspace (YC W23) – Cut back on screen time
Great work! I think apps like this will be seen as pioneers in the age of getting back our attention. From somebody else very interested in the topic, with a pending HN application for a startup app in the same space

paolomaffei··on Ask HN: Alternative ways to make money with coding and system skills?
the problem is how to identify capable non-technical founders.

I suspect the ratio of capable non-technical and technical founders is nearer 0.1-0.5:1

any thoughts on how to identify the unicorns?

paolomaffei··on On Loneliness
a Buddhist would say that just in the same way that a rock evolves into a human, a human evolves into a Buddha.
paolomaffei··on On Loneliness
Precisely, ultimately everything is empty.
paolomaffei··on Consciousness Isn’t a Mystery, It’s Matter
Scientific rationalism at its worst: trying to apply logic for something that is beyond logic, and all the way not realizing the basic mistake of thinking that everything in experience can be expressed or understood with logic, thought and scientific experiments.

The writer (and a very large part of society) is so oblivious to the unconscious dogma "Everything can be explained in a consistent scientific system" that he doesn't even see it he's holding it - precisely like a Christian will tell you "Look stuff is like this, it says so in the bible".

All this mental masturbation about trying to locate consciousness in the brain/body is utterly ridicoulous. Why do you think you haven't found it yet? Hello?

But according to scientific rationalism everything that exist is matter (for only matter can be PROVED to exist with a scientific experiment...), so consciousness must be there too right? Just like a man who's lost his keys outside, but the street is very dark and cold, so he decided to search for them in his house, which has lights to see better and is much more comfortable.

paolomaffei··on Banned by the Publisher
I agree that this sound like self-promoting, but calling that bit of the book "obviously unacceptable"?
paolomaffei··on My first ten-day Vipassana retreat
(Buddhist here)

Could I see quotations about the history of violence? Buddhism has by far the lowest score of violence of all five big religions of the world. Not to mention that when that violence did happen (zen priests blessing kamikazes during WW2, myanmar riots these days...) it has been condemned as explicitly not-buddhist by the wider Buddhist world (for violence has no place in the Buddha's thought).

As for it being a religion, well yes it is, however it is not a theistical religion that explicitly asks you to believe in a vengeful, retributing god.

The Buddha describes how reality works (karma - from a certain action an appropriate consequence will follow, and there's nothing fixed or permanent, just conditions giving rise to other conditions) with the important corollary that if you want to be happy, then do actions that are ethical because "good" consequences will follow from those. This is what we call a "philosophy" in western thought.

It only becomes a "religion" when one believes that one too, could be like the Buddha, becoming something that's much higher than what one is right now. One doesn't have to believe this bit however, one could very well follow the Buddha's teachings (and meditation, which is an integral part of) just to become a happier human being.

paolomaffei··on The Hacker Who Drank Ayahuasca
"We modern smart men have figured a way to have trippy experiences without puking and going into an uncomfortable jungle with this funny superstitious shamans, we are the best!" As if doing a hit of DMT was nearly the same thing as a proper Ayahuasca ceremony done with a shaman coming from a 10.000 years lineage. Sigh.

paolomaffei··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (January 2014)
SEEKING WORK - Remote (Based between Thailand and London, UK)

Frontend Developer with strong focus on JS frameworks Before the frontend contracts in London I ran a web development shop in Italy so I have experience in a broad set of technologies Specialized in MVP/prototypes.

My LinkedIn profile (1) is currently missing my last position after RocketLawyer: Lead Developer for a mapping cross-platform web application (from zero to alpha release) for a UK defense company

paolomaffei··on Ask HN: I actually need a job now
If you are half-decent at JS (specially if you actually can use Angular) I can get you a job in London (or even near Basingstoke if you now happen to live there) no problem, I'm literally swamped with work requests and got so many colleagues looking to hire decent frontend developers (probably Rails too but I don't do that so don't know that well)

IMHO if you are in UK there's no financial sense in staying outside London as jobs (and their compensation) are much better here

To be honest Italians prefer .it to .com, and I wouldn't be surprised if other countries did the same (It seems to be the case here in the UK, too).

Also hulu.com even before meaning something would have retailed for the sum that you mentioned.
