pacamara619··on Accused murderer wins right to check source code of DNA testing kit
It's not just like voting machines if it's just software. Just give it the same DNA as input and check if your results match the others.
pacamara619··on LibreOffice tells businesses: Get off Community version, you are hurting devs
From their blog:

> For enterprise-class deployments, TDF has strongly recommended the LibreOffice Enterprise family of applications from ecosystem partners – for desktop, mobile and cloud – with long-term support options, professional assistance, custom features and other benefits, including SLA (Service Level Agreements).

My company doesn't need this. We just need a program do open documents and spreadsheets. We don't need an ecosystem, we don't need their cloud, we don't need mobile suppoet, custom features, "professional assistance" or SLAs.

> Despite this recommendation, an increasing number of enterprises have chosen the version supported by volunteers over the version optimized for their needs.

Let that sink in for a second. Basically TDF is saying "we know what's best for you - it's paying us for things you don't need".

It's completely tone-deaf and I'm seriously considering creating a fork called FuckTDF-Suite with everything being identical except removing all mentions of "Community", "Enterprise", and donation prompts.

First Elastic, now this. If you're just salty about not getting money and don't care about the principles of free software, go sell your soul and work for M$FT or Goolag.

pacamara619··on Ask HN: What are the experiments Software Developer could do with a microscope?
What kind of microscope are we talking about?
pacamara619··on Join a browser fingerprinting study
>By using this, G--gle will hound you with impossible capchas and privacy-forward search engines will think that you're a bot

A friend of mine had an alternative theory: by making it very very hard to track you, you have shown to be somewhat intelligent and you have shown that you know more about computers than the average Joe. Goolag, knowing you're a somewhat intelligent human, gives you the very hard captchas it needs to train.

pacamara619··on Is it wrong to demand features in open-source projects?
The privilege you get from owning a project is that you don't have to do shit for anyone if you don't want to. If you don't like the feature someone wants or don't want to work on a bug report, don't.

Considering Apple got a very good score for their newest laptop, this is index is broken my design.
pacamara619··on I schedule my friendships like I schedule my meetings
> It's just that for busy people spontaneity doesn't happen often enough to maintain a friendship.

Precisely, especially if you want to have multiple engaging friendships.

pacamara619··on German laptop retailer fined $12.7M under GDPR for employee surveillance
A newer term being heard more often is "Datensparsamkeit". Id est only saving the absolutely necessary amount of data such that extensive surveillance and data abuse isn't possible.
pacamara619··on Behind a Secret Deal Between Google and Facebook

pacamara619··on McDonald’s Theory on How Best to Rescue Conversations
Great read but I've learned nothing. The only think I took away from this is that I want to go to the maccas but it's closed so thanks for making me hungry I guess.
pacamara619··on TikTok: All under-16s' accounts made private
> It tells more about what kind of content you are liking and watching than anything else.

This sounds very much like victim-blaming, I don't think it's appropriate to side with TikTok on this.

pacamara619··on My ISP Is Killing My Idle SSH Sessions
I see an IPv6 address on a computer screen. I want to connect to it from another computer. Copy pasting doesn't work between computers. Am I supposed to type it letter after letter? Am I supposed to send somehow? What if I don't have internet access on the first computer? Do I need to go find a USB stick so I can transfer a file with the IPv6 address? Am I supposed to set up a DNS server of some kind?

I'll keep my IPv4 thank you very much.

pacamara619··on Amazon, Walmart Tell Consumers to Skip Returns of Unwanted Items
> For inexpensive items or large ones that would incur hefty shipping fees, it is often cheaper to refund the purchase price and let customers keep the products.

I know many online shops which have done this for years, including amazon. It's just a no-brainer to let the customer keep a broken comb instead of making them return it. Shipping costs, people who receive the package cost, opening and inspecting the packaging costs and just processing that return costs a lot. Almost everybody has access to a phone with a very decent camera, that's enough to prove a product was broken on arrival.

How is the flag of Italy offensive to the Chinese Communist Party?

pacamara619··on IPhone12 will stop your implantable defibrillator
Any magnet close to your pacemaker or other implant will stop it. That's how they're supposed to (not) work.
pacamara619··on US intelligence agencies have 180 days to share what they know about UFOs
Yes! Precisely! Somehow people started associating UFOs with flying saucers and aliens. How would they know it's aliens if the U stands for unidentified?
pacamara619··on Tor – All v3 onion addresses are unavailable
> It appears that somebody has made their own Tor client implementation and it fetches its dir info in a very rude way. If anybody knows details of it, please do let us know.

How is it possible for a "rude client" to cripple TOR in this way?

pacamara619··on Teacher creates ingenious exam question to find cheaters and catches 14 students
Your professor made all students who looked up from their sheet go outside in the middle of the exam?
pacamara619··on Teacher creates ingenious exam question to find cheaters and catches 14 students
Our Functional Programming professor told us that we're free to use the internet for our homework. Since we'll be doing that at work, we might as well learn how to search for the solution we need. He also told us to wait at least 1-2h after reading a solution online before implementing it so we could (1) avoid plagiarizing and (2) learn how to apply what we just learned.
pacamara619··on Non-Apple, Non-Google Phone Options
It depends on the amount of effort you're willing to put in. If you just want something that works out of the box and isn't Apple or Goolag controlled, check out the Librem 5 or the PinePhone.

If you're willing to put in a little effort, check out which phones support the latest LineageOS version (e.g. Samsung Galaxy S5 or the LG G3).

The FairPhone might be worth considering because of its repairability but the FairPhone 3 isn't supported by LineageOS yet.

pacamara619··on Google Maps changes a route after the drama of young people lost on a ghost road
Even in my town, with 40'000 inhabitants, there are some "roads" in the forest on google maps which were closed for over a decade (mostly for safety reasons). Especially when riding a bike next to the forest you'll end up on this road because google thinks it's a shortcut.

Truth is, after 500-600m what remains of the road, more of a path, is totally overgrown and after ~900, ~1300 and ~1700 there are fences (I went for a hike down that path with a friend after repeatedly being guided down that path by google maps).

I only use OpenStreetMap for planning my hikes and bicylce routes now.
