pablobaz··on Airflow 2.0
I’ve used both extensively.

Here is my personal opinion of some Pros and Cons for the types of jobs that are in the fuzzy area of overlapping functionality.

Jenkins gui and interface handles lots of standalone jobs more nicely.

Jenkins has much better support for parameterised jobs that can be kicked off manually.

Airflow can handle dependencies between jobs in a much better way. Nicely defining and visualising dags of job really is the killer feature.

Browsing task/job logs is nicer in Airflow IMO.

Airflow scheduler is flaky - hopefully better in 2.0.

Airflow has much more “magic” than Jenkins this is often infuriating.

All that said, my preference is to move jobs to Airflow. Getting a nice gui for manually triggered jobs in airflow is/was the only large missing piece for me.

pablobaz··on A linguistic glitch tricks us into thinking bank deposits are deposited in banks
In Ireland, you make a lodgement when you are paying into a bank.

I was in disbelief when I first realised that no-one in the UK knows what a lodgement is.

pablobaz··on Old CSS, New CSS
Nice article. Surprised it does not mention the acid tests https://www.acidtests.org/
pablobaz··on Ask HN: What do you know about bitemporal databases?
For versioning numeric data complications include:

- changing dimensions - handling changing types e.g. A column of strings becoming a compound of floats - efficiently handling appends - efficiently handling corrections of previous data - how to cleanup, remove old versions

The version store storage engine in Arctic provides fast and efficient versioning for numeric data. The code is quite readable so it might be worth having a look at its implementation too.

pablobaz··on Undermining strategic stability: The burst-height compensating super-fuze (2017)
I thought the same. Which ultimately leads me to ask - what is the point of this expensive and dangerous endeavour?
pablobaz··on The Crash of United Flight 232 (2017)
This book about the incident is a great read. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Flight-232-Story-Disaster-Survival/...

It goes into detail about the causes of the crash, the stories of the passengers before and after the crash.

One thing not mentioned was that version controlling notebooks is horrible - try diffing a big json mess that mixes input and output.

longform.org provides a great curated selection of articles, including many older gems.
pablobaz··on Voting system to be used in West Virginia elections is vulnerable
€54 million spent in Ireland. End result:

"In 2012, KMK Metals Recycling paid €70,267 for 7,500 e-voting machines; 1,232 transport/storage trolleys; 2,142 hand trolleys and 4,787 metal tilt tables."

pablobaz··on Inventing a Language, from the Guy Who Made Dothraki (2015)
An interesting anecdote is when the producers couldn't contact the language creator and had to make up a line on the spot.

The language creator then back-fitted the made up gibberish into the language.

pablobaz··on Putting the I back in IDE
Nothing to stop you adding the Shift+F9 shortcut to the gui.

Gui's are often preferred for the speed at which new hires can use them. In environments with high turnover this is important. You can have the best of both worlds with a GUI that has good shortcuts and clever cursor placement. I agree though that most gui implementations have not put enough effort into this.

ITER is not a power station it is a research project.

pablobaz··on The Navy’s Second Stealth Zumwalt-Class Destroyer Is Almost Ready for Action
At over $4 Billion each, I'd hope they still get top class skippers. Whatever the training, recruitment, retention etc. costs the Navy it would be worth it.
pablobaz··on Ask HN: What kitchen/cooking hacks that have been really effective for you?
IMO the key to chopping an onion is to leave the root end intact, that way the bits are held together for the second cut. Then there is no holding together or spreading out of the bits required. Try it and you'll never go back!

pablobaz··on 2017 JavaScript Rising Stars
From your link, in the last year alone Vue has had approximately a 5-fold increase in the number of downloads.

Describing this trend as "mostly flat with a slight upward bend." is very misleading.

pablobaz··on World's steepest funicular railway opens in Switzerland
That is very true. But my point still stands. People hear a percentage number and assume the max is 100.

Also generally with ski slopes the quoted gradient is some tiny portion of the run. Top to bottom the actual gradient is much less.

pablobaz··on World's steepest funicular railway opens in Switzerland
In my experience percent grade is usually used as a measure when people want to make something sound really steep.

E.g. "this ski slope has a gradient of 90%!!!"

pablobaz··on Scouts and guides provide ‘mental health boost for life’
A town of about 50k people, but the troop had a wider catchment area of maybe up to 200k
pablobaz··on Scouts and guides provide ‘mental health boost for life’
As a former scout leader, I think there is also another effect at play. In my experience parents often send children to scouts when they don't fit into more mainstream team sports and when children are struggling to make friends elsewhere.

These children are often particularly socially awkward. I'm not an expert but I think that this group of children may be more predisposed to mental illness.
