Yeah, my bad.

That is not the point I was making. I am not talking about validating software or maths. It can generate stuff that is valid, but bad and incomprehensible.

> Why would I care what they want me to believe?

How would you not care? Are you a robot?

They can say random stuff with the goal of increasing their shareholder value. Things they spit out do not have to be true. It is not easy to verify things they say, therefore, everything they say should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

C'mon AI companies, pivot to lawyers or doctors already.

Trying to convince us that mathematics and software engineering are "solved" is getting very tiring.

The pushback would probably be too much for the soon-to-be IPO-ed companies.

"The age of humans comprehending things is coming to an end"

That's something AI companies would really want you to believe.

I really hate bash because of its unreadable syntax, and this does not help it in any way.

We have some large bash scripts in my company, ~10,000 LOC spread across multiple files, all sourcing each other and what not. It is truly hard to read bash, which means it is truly hard to maintain bash, which means that when the one person knowing the bash scripts in your company goes away, you're in for some "fun".

My point is, these quirks are not useful, except for some bash enthusiasts.

I don't think that not travelling is the solution. A lot of people cannot avoid flying.
orphereus··on Did they ghost you?
This comment really has no purpose other than being petulent.
orphereus··on Did They Ghost You?
What does this have to do with the original comment?
orphereus··on Did They Ghost You?
My anegdotal experience in EU is that ghosting AFTER the company responds to your application is very, very rare.

I would always get the usual "Unfortunately, we have decided..." charades. At least no ghosting.

I can think of only one situation, and it was kinda peculiar in its own right (they called me 8 months after my application because they were in a jam and I said I won't be able to start in such a short notice they wanted, and they warned me in advance they would ghost me because the HR was I presume in a crunch).

As for the ghostings BEFORE they even respond to the job application, I'd say that it is around 40% of job applications that I never get a response after "We have received your job application yada yada yada".

Again, this is just my anegdotal experience. Maybe my experience in EU job market is a rarity.

orphereus··on Frame – Linux X server in Assembly
This has got to be the craziest AI-shill sentence I have heard in a long time.

How can a generic LLM generate better assembly than a dedicated compiler, whose sole purpose is to generate assembly code. With people pedantically adding every optimization imaginable and unimaginable to produce the most efficient code possible. And you have the audacity to say LLMs, which write garbage non-trivial amount of time, are capable of producing better assembly.

This has got to be either a masterful ragebait, or a person with very low knowledge of modern compilers, because even an LLM would not write something so stupid as this.

orphereus··on Frame – Linux X server in Assembly
At first I was so interested into this guy, writing his own everything, thinking this has got to be something to aspire to, to be as good a programmer as this guy. Then I realised LLMs wrote this, and I was so very disappointed. It was naive and stupid of me to think otherwise, but here I am.

This comment is so weird. It is so vague to me and feels so off, like an alien from Men in Black trying to pass as a human.

orphereus··on Why it's so difficult to produce American-made medical gloves
Shouldn't free market reward companies that go the other way and where people don't "fail upwards"? It is kind of demoralising to think otherwise, but it seems it is true.

We see it everywhere. Bad companies making bad decisions keep surviving, and actually the vast majority of companies are like this.

One implication is that MBAs in suits that make bad decisions are actually right and their decisions are not bad. The other implication is that there is no free market, no meritocracy and the truth is, game was rigged from the start.

Edit: I should add that most of this is anegdotal evidence and a general feeling I have. It is not a very powerful argument I'm making.
