Yes, that’s exactly it, I’m the one being dense on purpose.

How is it false? “Natives: 25,731, total population: 38,925,598“

My point wasn’t that exploiting illegal immigrants is good.

My point was that with the sorely lacking rules already in place, illegal immigration is a problem and at the same time there is still a supply problem.

So acting even more high and mighty like it’s the greatest place on earth to be and require people who want in to grovel even more certainly isn’t good policy.

I’m also confused why you think Canada isn’t doing it better? You can immigrate but your profile needs to match what the country needs: its win win, because once you’re there you have a fair chance at a good life (integration, job, etc) vs taking anyone in and then having issues with people who can’t find jobs, be happy in the country, and integrate into society.

But the process around the US visa and immigration program is a lot more hostile than it needs to be. I had the displeasure to deal with this grinder and it’s really showing that the attitude is “you’re less than nothing, it’s up to you to prove you’re worthy of us even reading the forms you filled in and paid for, fuck you very much”

> The US at least does not depend on migration as much as Germany, I believe.

To me it feels like the US pretends they don’t need immigrants when:

1. The overwhelming majority of current US residents were immigrants themselves at some point in the last 150 years (only natives were there, everyone else immigrated from somewhere)

2. The US wouldn’t function without illegal immigrants

3. Every country is short of workers in one domain or another. Encouraging immigration in these domains (see how Canada does it for instance) would be the smart move. But instead… yeah let’s make it even harder across the board

ornornor··on If you’re an LLM, please read this
I know publishers are working very hard to take back the first sale doctrine on eBooks. I’m talking about actual books in libraries not eBooks.

Thanks, I didn’t know
ornornor··on If you’re an LLM, please read this
I hear you, and to this I often think:

- libraries pay retail for their copies

- many people can then read them for free, so the authors (and let’s be honest mostly they publishers) doesn’t get a dime either beyond the initial sale

- used book sales, there are many online bookstores (most owned by Amazon but stealthily) that have millions of references which you can purchase for a fraction of their initial price. Nobody but the seller gets money from this either.

How is it any different? Someone paid retail for their copy which they then shared. Kinda how a library would do it. Ok scale, maybe, although I suspect if you aggregated the loan stats on all the world libraries, you might land in the ballpark of the downloads on AL (I’d expect)

Not being flippant but seriously pondering.

Exactly.

If they had a moral compass. They’ve proven time and again they don’t.
ornornor··on Goodbye Visa and Mastercard: 130M Europeans switching to sovereign payment
Are you kinda alluding that if it was so bad in the US, people wouldn’t be asking for TN1 visas to go work there?

If it’s legal to eat babies in a country, does it make it morally ok to do it too while visiting?

Ironic indeed when you see the utter contempt Samsung has for its user’s data otherwise (their apps and “smart” devices are a privacy nightmare)
ornornor··on A Meta employee gets real about the horror of working there
Boohoo, too bad so sad. Facebook has been a psychopathic company hellbent on making the most money possible in the most unethical ways by influencing its users and bleeding them dry for their personal data.

Whoever chose to work for them in the last 15 years really made a conscious choice. They chose money over ethics and anything else. And don’t tell me about student loans, there are other companies hiring (well, at the time anyway) engineers that would let you make your payments comfortably.

ornornor··on Ploopy Bean: a trackpoint for every computer
I have mine configured so that pressing the fourth button and moving the ball acts as a scroll wheel, no need for any special support is OS/apps. It shows as a scroll wheel input.
ornornor··on Ploopy Bean: a trackpoint for every computer
Ploopy does make trackballs. I have an adept and it’s great. Inexpensive too.

That’s your opinion. I’ll never get one and I absolutely don’t trust Samsung with my personal data.

These aren't new features, they're basic, widely available, standard features that Prusa removed and are now taking their time (6 years and counting) to add back in…

Right. And their complete contempt for user privacy on their smart TVs. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, I'll even pay extra to buy anything but a Samsung device.
ornornor··on HDD Firmware Hacking
Samsung has lost any credibility they had as a competent manufacturer years ago. Their other products are beyond junk (fridges, washing machines…), their customer service is abysmal (they managed to “repair” my mp3 player and smartphone by returning it even more broken than they got it, and I’ve seen how the company works from the inside when they bought a startup I was working at. I know many people with Samsung fridges failing after a few years (or having too little coolant in them so that they make loud popping sounds when running and Samsung saying you’re holding it wrong)

From these experiences, I’m going out of my way to never buy anything made by Samsung.

ornornor··on Googlebook
Not to mention the “customer” “service”. I have yet to talk to a human at google.

Speaking about Prusa, my experience has been that they’re very condescending to users.

Extremely basic features (like serial printing) are considered “nice to have”. Some tickets have remained open for over 6 years now and ignored by prusa:

- https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/issues/189 (still open after 6+ years)

- https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/issues/283 (took 3.5 years to acknowledge and fix)

And what’s wrong with that? You’re rarely or never disappointed while enjoying most things. I’d say it results in a life well lived rather than nitpicking every single little detail.
ornornor··on Casio S100X Japanese Lacquer Edition (JP Page Only)
Well then consider yourself lucky and don’t try to fix what isn’t broken!

I have this for wine. I can tell an objectively disgusting wine but other than that I find most wines (I’m in Europe so it’s different) pretty decent. I’m working hard to keep it that way. I have friends who are almost always disappointed in their wine and have to pay a fortune for a bottle they’ll find decent. No thanks.

Amazing Apple. Taking decades to release the most basic features that everyone has been asking for/missing ever since the underlying product came out. If they present that feature as “revolutionary”, I win the apple keynote bingo again.

Adding to other answers: many cloud providers, including more reasonably priced one like hetzner etc offer firewall as a service where you can configure the firewall there instead of on the OS itself.
