ornornor··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
I was seeing recently that while the younger generation knows how to post on TikTok and use instagram, most are unable to copy paste on a computer. Or use a word processor. Apparently they’re on a similar level to boomers when it comes to using computers (but for different reasons). They grew up with walled gardens and locked down devices so that’s all they know to use. If there isn’t an app, it can’t be done.
ornornor··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
Too bad they’re seemingly Tesla batteries (from the picture). Like that self absorbed idiot needs even more money :(
ornornor··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
I use NextDNS on my iPhone and I don’t think I’ve ever seen these ads in years of usage. I lay my coups dollars a month for iCloud family storage but that’s it.
ornornor··on Largest wildlife overpass in North America reduced wildlife collision by 91%
It’s not “burn 15M on missiles or spend it inefficiently on infra buildout”. It could also be “spend half as much on efficient infra buildout”
ornornor··on Great Lakes sturgeon may be 400 years old:Scientists rethinking how to save them
Even better is to not put them there. How sadistic is it to rip the palate and mouth of a fish just for fun and put it back in the water?
ornornor··on iPhone Duo
“From 1999$”. We truly have gone insane. For a phone most people keep 5 years tops.
ornornor··on How I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
Same for business reviews. I’ve given up because mine are always rejected. No reason given, no appeal possible. It’s almost as if I was shadowbanned. So I don’t leave reviews anymore and wonder how many reviews are black holed. Or even how useful the reviews are because the fake reviews are rampant.
ornornor··on Shutting down our public encrypted DNS
Curious what alternative you found as a replacement. Could you share?
ornornor··on Shutting down our public encrypted DNS
Been using them for years. The price is reasonable too. It’s the only way I found to block ads everywhere on iOS (except the YT app, Mullvad’s Albania wireguard did that)
ornornor··on Shutting down our public encrypted DNS
Mullvad had adblocking, malware blocking. And they didn’t block websites from governments blacklists in France and Italy. None of these features are available on Quad9.

Maybe it’s time to try nym.com?

ornornor··on Hackers Had a Live Feed of Every ID Verification Company Scanned for over a Year
> This week a massive new data breach has been revealed that should put the nail in the coffin for the idea that any sort of age or identity verification could be safe.

Yeah just like how the multiple breaches and utter negligence from the incumbent credit bureaus killed the credit file managed by private companies.

ornornor··on FBI Probes Service Selling 153M+ Drivers Licenses
I once tried to reach one of the two Canadian background check companies a prospective employer wanted to use to check me. I eventually found their privacy and security phone number. It had a poorly recorded voicemail to leave a message and they’d call back to answer questions. It’s been 12 years. They haven’t called me back yet but I’m assured they take privacy very seriously.

I didn’t go through with that part of my application and didn’t keep the job.

ornornor··on Fastpotify
I suspect the official app would actually be more consistent and not as bad to use if it was generated by an LLM.
ornornor··on Andreessen Horowitz is investing billions into a bleak future
We’re already heading into a certain demographics crisis. It’s not only about the pyramidal system that retirement is but also about who will be your nurse when you’re old, make your car, be your doctor, etc if there aren’t enough people anymore? Every developed country is well below replacement rate with no real plans from the powers that be to address it because it’s so far in the future that it’s the next best guy problem (30 years horizon)
ornornor··on AliExpress runs silent WebAudio fingerprinting that breaks Bluetooth multipoint
There are few things more scammy than AliExpress “discounts”. I have yet to see a cent of the hundreds of dollars of “savings” they gave or advertised to me.
ornornor··on OpenLogi
> At least, video animations are not a mess of frameworks and libraries that eat your RAM and CPU and introduce vulnerabilities.

Somebody at Logitech right now: “hold my beer”

ornornor··on A 25-year-old video patent just expired, ending a legal headache for Linux
There is no good Lenovo hardware anymore. It’s been completely swallowed by the Chinese company that bought it, and even the formerly “noble”/enterprise lines are junk now. Same as HP.
ornornor··on Children's stunted lungs show recovery in ultra low emission zone
So you support censorship?

Just kidding, I’ve seen it more and more as well, and feel the same as you about it.

ornornor··on OpenLogi
1.2GB though. That’s a lot of json.
ornornor··on OpenLogi
Logitech seems to suck at software. Why do you need an online account to remap your mouse buttons?

Same for the harmony 1100 which is a universal remote but can’t ever be programmed again since logitech killed their online server. It had the secret sauce for generating the binary blob to send the device to program it and nobody could figure out how this mess actually works to reimplement it. It seems like the blob wasn’t just parameters but also all sorts of scripts that changed with the config.

Needless to say I steer clear of Logitech anything now. It’s joined my blacklist along with Samsung and LG.

ornornor··on Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?
It’s not like OP is putting a gun to anyone’s head!! If they want to share we’d appreciate but there is no obligation.

Are you also shocked that you can stand in the middle of the highway and get hit by a car and die? You can do it if someone asks you but you’re not forced to.

ornornor··on Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?
I’ve noticed the same thing with computers, whenever I install MS windows on them uptime tanks ;)
ornornor··on Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?
Maybe they didn’t take the severance part that makes the NDA valid? IIRC for an NDA to be enforceable there has to be a monetary consideration to it. Or maybe it’s for no competes?
ornornor··on Rapid warming may tip AMOC at 2°C, slower warming may avert collapse
How is this relevant to what we’re discussing in this thread?
ornornor··on Rapid warming may tip AMOC at 2°C, slower warming may avert collapse
> you can't tell people "we have to work more to simply keep the status quo", let alone "we may even lose a lot of nice things and convenience in the process"

And yet this is what will happen. The question is are we walking into this prepared, or not? Just like a war, it’s unpleasant, most people would rather not do it, but would you rather be on the side that prepared for it or on the side that gets “surprised” by it?

ornornor··on Rapid warming may tip AMOC at 2°C, slower warming may avert collapse
> nobody want to hear about the dream of reducing growth, buying less, consuming less, etc.

The problem is that it’s going to happen either way.

The only question is are we facing this prepared or are we having a tantrum refusing to accept it and get hit by it anyway with our pants down? Looks like we’re going for pants down.

ornornor··on London Underground begins scanning passengers' faces
Why is Britain police and government seemingly sp eager to build a panopticon? I get it’s the trend worldwide but I’ve always had the impression Britain goes the extra mile and is well above the general level of surveillance typically found in western societies.

I remember about 20 years ago when I lived in London, you had to provide ID to enter clubs. Ok, to check your age. But the bouncers would also scan your id into machines at the entrance that recorded you were there “for your security, and if you don’t want you don’t get in”. Why? See also the vast number of CCTV cameras all over London, more than most capitals in western societies have.

And I suspect it started way before that, see Orwell 1984 for instance.

Where is this obsession coming from??

ornornor··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
That’s a terrible idea. Just think about privacy, pollution, cost.
ornornor··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
> A Mars spokesperson said: "Over the last 35 years, we have made a number of updates to our bar sizes and pack formats to reflect consumer demand, alongside considering wider external factors such as manufacturing costs and the price of cocoa."

I can guarantee you this is not “consumer demand”. Nobody goes to the store thinking “I wish shrinkflation was even more prevalent and that I’d get even less for my money”. Screw you corporate BS PR department, you’re not even trying.

ornornor··on Analyzing data from Silicon Valley ventures and founders prosecuted for fraud
There two types of SV founders: those committing fraud and those who haven’t been caught. It’s an arms race.
