orasis··on Basic income would not reduce people’s willingness to work
You’re mixing cause and effect. They became billionaires in large part because of their work ethic.
orasis··on Wordle is being punished by app stores for choosing the open web
Apple removed a bunch of clones yesterday.
orasis··on Loving Someone with Depression
I’m one of the happiest, most fit people I know and I do not drink caffeine because it consistently affected my sleep.
orasis··on Ask HN: How do you have fun without alcohol?
If you want to try an alternative, you can give Kava a shot - it'll make you feel relaxed but mentally clear. The downside of Kava is that it tastes terrible and you have to pee all the time.
orasis··on Loving Someone with Depression
Multiple friends and family members are currently successfully managing their depression. Prior to that multiple weren't able to manage their depression and killed themselves. I had a close friend thank me on her birthday for suggesting ketamine - she said she probably wouldn't be alive without me making her aware of it.
orasis··on Loving Someone with Depression
Yeah sorry. I’m not going to just listen. A lot of the time you need to push them to take the next step because they are STUCK.

Go exercise, eat some healthy food, take your damn meds, try new meds, try ketamine if suicidal, try psilocybin if treatment resistant.

But coddling depression just drags it out longer and digs the spiral deeper. Yes, it is a disease which means it needs to be treated.

orasis··on Are cryptocurrencies to blame for high GPU prices?
"therefore there's absolutely no way prices of hardware and energy will return to normal until governments won't stop this nonsense." It will stop once the crypto prices reach parity with the hardware investments plus or minus further speculation.
orasis··on Tokyo: A big city that is also pleasant to live in
Rather than they “used to build cities this way”, perhaps it just takes centuries for cities to evolve to a good form.
orasis··on “Play-to-Earn” and Bullshit Jobs
Play-to-Earn with real world earnings will never be sustainable given the state of the art in reinforcement learning.

The RL game playing agent essentially becomes a form of NFT mining that no human could ever complete against.

orasis··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
Thanks for raising this issue. I had to back from meditation entirely due to disassociation and energetic unwellness. Heavy physical exercise helped get me back in the body.
orasis··on Failed for the past 12 years as an tech entrepreneur
Yes, and to the point where I no longer care about business success. I just continue to practice creating value for others.
orasis··on Failed for the past 12 years as an tech entrepreneur
I’m sincerely not trying to be mean, but it’s possible you were previously simply bad at entrepreneurship.

There is this dominant narrative that entrepreneurship is primarily about raw willpower and persistence despite the odds. As a 20+ year entrepreneur I do not believe this to be the case.

I believe the primary skill is observation. Yes, we need to try different ideas, but what really makes a product work is listening to the market and identifying opportunities to create value. You’re not fixed on a product/solution ahead of time, but are just paying attention to needs and how those needs intersect with our unique abilities to create value.

When this is working well, it looks like luck. Over time we develop multiple viable business options and we get to choose the very best ones. Instead of a slog, success comes relatively easy.

orasis··on Ask HN: 27, accidentally became wealthy, lost drive. What should I do?
Kids certainly give us purpose and meaning! :)
orasis··on Ask HN: 27, accidentally became wealthy, lost drive. What should I do?
I went through something similar 15 years ago. Your problem is effectively a spiritual problem.

You need to discover exactly who you are and learn to fully love yourself in order to be fully alive again. When you know yourself, your meaning and purpose become clear.

Exactly how you accomplish this is specific to you, but know that what got you here, won’t get you there.

It could be meditation, psychedelics, athletics, social volunteering, reading philosophy, travel, who knows?

Psychedelic therapy can be the most efficacious for many people and I strongly recommend reading Michael Pollan’s “How to Change Your Mind”. While all the psychedelics have the potential to positively improve your life, MDMA done in a therapeutic setting is often the easiest/most gentle and can still deliver big results.

Ask yourself what are you afraid of? What do you resent about yourself? Who are you unable to forgive? These are all the things that block you from fully loving yourself and are the types of questions that MDMA or loving-kindness meditation can gently guide you through.

There is light at the end of the tunnel and an absolutely amazing life awaits you in the future. Money does make life much easier, so use it to become the next evolution of your self.

orasis··on The Bay Area has become a large declining tech company
I simply can’t fathom how tax payers allow this to happen. Is someone from the Midwest I cannot understand the mindset that says this type of thing is OK? I guess the Bay Area selects against people that think like me so it becomes a self reinforcing problem??
orasis··on Opt Out of Cynicism
To fight against something is to be controlled by the thing you’re fighting against. “Freedom from” is not the same as “freedom to”.
orasis··on Smart Contract Bug Results in $31M Loss
This begs an important question for society: Should smart contracts be legally binding (bugs and all)?
orasis··on How to Save a Ski Town
When dealing with mountains, ground water scarcity is a serious issue, so “just build” is fairly tough to do.
orasis··on AWS free tier data transfer expansion
My thought as well. I was just about to spin up a new service on cloudflare and now I’ll stick with AWS.
orasis··on Dask – A flexible library for parallel computing in Python
I love Dask for parallel computing because instead of threads or agents, you’re primarily using distributed data structures like distributed DataFrames, Series, and Bags.

It’s made our code very small, clean, and bug free.

orasis··on Calm Technology
This are spot on. People should also apply these principals to their political philosophies. Everyone wants to burden others with their ideas.

“A person's primary task should not be computing, but being human.”

“Give people what they need to solve their problem, and nothing more.”

orasis··on Report on Stablecoins [pdf]
Legislation will ensure that reality continues to be determined by legislation, not computer code.
orasis··on The metaverse is bullshit
Sorry, have you seen their profits? Facebook is not going away any time soon.
orasis··on Swift Distributed Actors
After using a data structure first framework like Dask I can’t imagine ever going back to an actor oriented approach.
orasis··on What caused all the supply chain bottlenecks?
Efficiency is better for the environment than stockpiling.
orasis··on Consistent Hashing for Dummies
I hadn’t heard of the “Jump Consistent Hashing” algorithm that this article uses. The original paper is much more informative than the article:

https://arxiv.org/abs/1406.2294

orasis··on Parsing gigabytes of JSON per second
protocols have two sides - a producer and a consumer. The consumer often doesn’t have control of the producer, especially in the case of analytics.
orasis··on Hardened wood as a renewable alternative to steel and plastic
“Except, of course, cryptocurrency isn't nearly as useful as, say, desalinated water.”

Heresy!!

orasis··on The Problem of Marital Loneliness
I always practice giving, even with people I don’t like, and the results are fantastic.
orasis··on Ask HN: It seems like everyone is getting rich?
Yeah? How happy are you? How holistically successful are you? It is my observation that those that operate from fear and scarcity based programming remain quite unhappy their entire lives.
