open-paren··on OpenSpec – A lightweight and configurable AI spec framework
my org at work adopted openspec, and i strongly dislike it. every change, medium or larger, turns into a large set of multiple markdown documents, each that need review. and they are never handwritten - always slop, filled with the all the tells of ai writing, which i personally find grating.

i find a small, human written spec to be much more effective than these large spec documents.

the idea is that you iterate with your agent to write the spec, you implement, then eventually that spec gets merged into a "spec corpus" that describes all the behavior of the repository. but i don't think that prose can ever enumerate all the behaviors required of code, nor should it. the spec almost immediately becomes out of date.

open-paren··on Fast regex search: indexing text for agent tools
The creator of fff.nvim[0], Dmitriy Kovalenko, had an interesting analysis of this on Xitter[1]. The TL;DR of this is that Anysphere/Cursor is being somewhat disingenuous and does not include the index-creation and recreation time in the comparison nor do they include the CPU or memory overhead, where rg (and his tool, fff.nvim) are indexless.

It uses Steph Ango's/kepano's defuddle under the hood.

The live version is hosted on a single free-tier fly.io node, but it is easily self-hosted.

open-paren··on FEX-emu – Run x86 applications on ARM64 Linux devices
> FEX allows you to run x86 applications on ARM64 Linux devices, similar to qemu-user and box64. It offers broad compatibility with both 32-bit and 64-bit binaries, and it can be used alongside Wine/Proton to play Windows games.

> It supports forwarding API calls to host system libraries like OpenGL or Vulkan to reduce emulation overhead. An experimental code cache helps minimize in-game stuttering as much as possible. Furthermore, a per-app configuration system allows tweaking performance per game, e.g. by skipping costly memory model emulation. We also provide a user-friendly FEXConfig GUI to explore and change these settings.

> On the technical side, FEX features an advanced binary recompiler that supports all modern extensions of the x86(-64) instruction set, including AVX/AVX2. The heart of this recompiler is a custom IR that allows us to generate more optimized code than a traditional splatter JIT. A comprehensive system call translation layer takes care of differences between the emulated and host operating systems and implements even niche features like seccomp. A modular core enables FEX to be used as a WoW64/ARM64EC backend in Wine.

Used by the new Steam Frame (https://store.steampowered.com/sale/steamframe) which is an ARM64 Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 that will run PC and PCVR gaming titles.

open-paren··on The Windows 10 emoji picker has been broken for a month
Is this a safe place to complain about the emoji picker on macOS? The one on Sonoma was... Fine, if not very laggy. But macOS 26 Beta replaced it with the CHARACTER VIEWER. A separate application that does auto focus into the search box and does not auto quit after selection. Those are table stakes for a picker.

open-paren··on Why so few Matt Levines?
He absolutely wastes the bits dunking on dumb people in the comments, but his on topic writing is unparalleled. Take his most recent blog post, American Space Cowboys. It's an indepth discussion on the fashion of the Apollo 11 trainees. That kind of article doesn't happened very often and has lots of fundamental principles and history of workwear dress pieces.
open-paren··on Why so few Matt Levines?
I think Derek Guy (@dieworkwear and "the Twitter menswear guy") is a decent "Matt Levine" for the menswear space, as much as there can be one for a subjective subject.

He focuses on the clothes first and never his personal celebrity, although he uses his Twitter platform to promote the desire for affordable housing and respect for immigrants fairly frequently. I don't think there is a picture of him anywhere on the internet. He violently rejects all paid content opportunities. Instead, he focuses on the aspects of good tailoring, "shape and drape", and the history of many menswear items. His bug thing is that "clothing is a cultural language" that all speak.

* putthison.com (he is among the writers, but the big itself is mostly dead now-a-days)

* dieworkwear.com (his personal, infrequent blog)

* styleforum.net (a forum where he used to participate a lot)

I wish his (substantial) Twitter activity was available elsewhere.

open-paren··on Gorhill pulls uBlock Origin Lite from Firefox store
I manage a medium-sized browser extension at work. We also offer(ed) it on Firefox. But I have spent the past year struggling to get back into Mozilla store after a manual review. As far as I can tell, there are maybe two reviewers that are based in Europe (Romania?). The turn around time is long when I am in the US, and it has been rife with this same kind of "simple mistake" that takes 2 weeks to resolve. "You need a privacy policy"–we already have one. "You are using machine generated and minified code"–no you are looking at the built code, not the included source. "We cannot reproduce your source"-that's because you didn't follow instructions and are in the wrong directory. Very frustrating.

open-paren··on ICANN's list of abandoned vanity TLDs
Agreed. I use .works and maybe 5% of places don't accept it (the biggest I can think of off the top of my head is Ubisoft). There are some, like my local groceries store chain, that accepts it for account registration but it fails somewhere in the sign-in process. This is not the first time it has happened either.
open-paren··on Many people don't pay full price, most don't want to pay at all for news
The stopper (or at least one) is probably credit card transaction fees. There is usually a minimum fee of like 15¢ which makes it less feasible to do transactions under a dollar.
