olivierestsage··on reMarkable 2
My experience is that handwriting is qualitatively different experience from typing, and has different cognitive effects (I think there is actually a fair bit of research corroborating this idea). I can type as fast as someone can speak, so I can create a perfect record of e.g. a meeting, but as I do so I'm on "autopilot" -- basically acting as a passive scribe, transmitting from voice to text without thinking about it at all. With handwriting, the limitations of the medium (speed, etc.) force one into an active synthesis of the material, which helps a lot with retention. A handwritten note becomes something I remember, and often don't even need as a note, because I remember it so well; something I jot down in my text editor becomes fodder for searches later on. It's just a different beast.
olivierestsage··on reMarkable 2
Just adding my opinion to the fray: I love mine (purchased last month). Have been using it constantly -- much more than I expected, actually -- for marking up books, taking notes, etc. I am not paying for a cloud subscription and it works perfectly; no dark patterns or nags getting in the way of anything I do. The niche it's filled for me is that I have been fighting wrist pain/strain from writing with pencils etc. as a lefty, and this tablet "replaces paper" by offering a way to write handwritten notes without exerting pressure downward on the page to make a mark.

In this thread, I'm seeming some mentions of Kindle Scribe alongside critiques of the optional reMarkable subscription system. Do you really think that thing will not funnel people to Amazon Prime... ?

olivierestsage··on Ask HN: What's Your Biggest Regret?
I lived through the same experience. If you ever figure out this problem (which you clearly have), you have nothing to regret. Not everyone does.
olivierestsage··on Joining the Church of Emacs
Emacs is great all-around, but I would use it if it literally only had org-mode as a feature. That thing has saved my bacon.
olivierestsage··on D3wasm 0.4 – Doom 3 in WASM
It will be interesting to see how this game's legacy will ultimately be viewed. For the first decade or so after its release, it got a lot of flak for certain design choices, like the limited access it gives the player to the flashlight, that don't seem like such a big deal anymore.
olivierestsage··on iPhone = Privacy?
The cost of TVs is now heavily subsidized by the data-mining, though, whereas I don't see much evidence that's the case for Apple products, whatever their other problems (if such evidence does exist, I'd be interested to see it).
olivierestsage··on Robert's Rules of Order (1876)
I have definitely never heard anyone pronounce the "Robert" of "Robert's Rules" in the French way. If I encountered that, I would find it abhorrently pretentious.
olivierestsage··on Ask HN: How do you justify your existence?
I don't, baby. <Lights cigarette>
olivierestsage··on A Spectre Is Haunting Unicode (2018)
Reminds me of the case of U+237C ⍼ RIGHT ANGLE WITH DOWNWARDS ZIGZAG ARROW [0], also discussed on HN [1].

olivierestsage··on How do dolphins choose their name?
The concept that we should abstain from all animal meat is the very definition of human exceptionalism, since it amounts to saying we have transcended our animal natures to such an extent that we've moved past the instincts we share in common with non-humans.
olivierestsage··on Football shirts chart the rise and fall of tech giants
Just a comment on design: I really like the "stacked cards" effect on mobile. Cool and not gimmicky.
olivierestsage··on Show HN: Bible Semantic Search
This is a very useful tool -- thank you.

Life imitating art imitating life.
olivierestsage··on Ask HN: Is pornography harmful and what effects you noticed from abstaining?
I've been porn-free for 1 year now, after a 20-year-long addiction. I feel more intimate with my wife and have a higher self-esteem generally after quitting.

After trying to quit and failing countless times, what finally worked for me was praying -- specifically, the Rosary. I'm not saying that's the only way by any means, but that's what worked for me.

Thanks for sharing. This is excellent.
olivierestsage··on Joni Mitchell joins Neil Young in protest against Spotify
They would be rewarded if Spotify dropped Joe Rogan to appease them.
olivierestsage··on Joni Mitchell joins Neil Young in protest against Spotify
I didn't actually mention free speech in my comment, which (although I do passionately believe in it!) I don't consider the main issue here. If a precedent is set for artists being rewarded for demanding that other artists be removed from platforms, where will it end? How will the line be drawn? How much content will the people listening on these platforms be deprived of simply because of rivalries and the like? It doesn't seem like it's in the interest of listeners or customers to behave this way.
olivierestsage··on Joni Mitchell joins Neil Young in protest against Spotify
I'll resist[0] the impulse to make fun of these artists as having an inflated sense of their own importance, and simply join others in noting that this kind of behavior shouldn't be tolerated. It sets a horrible precedent, no matter what one thinks about Joe Rogan.

Edit: Too late now to save myself from downvote land, but I just spoke poorly. I meant it shouldn't be tolerated in the form of Spotify acquiescing to the demands. Obviously the artists can do whatever they want.

olivierestsage··on Why video game doors are so hard to get right [video]
I always thought the first Quake had it right: doors slide open automatically upon the approach of the player character, and are always fully open by the time you reach them, so the player is never blocked (as long as they have the key). But obviously that would not work for a game set in a realistic setting.
olivierestsage··on Balena Etcher Pro – Fast write to multiple cards or USB disks at once
I used to use Balena Etcher for writing bootable media, but have started to use Ventoy[1] for this instead. It's really nice to be able to have multiple bootable ISOs on a single flash drive (and also keep using them for regular storage at the same time).

olivierestsage··on QR Codes Are Here to Stay. So Is the Tracking They Allow
I don't believe that restaurants or other organizations should feel entitled to make me use my mobile data, which I pay for by the gigabyte, to access their services.
olivierestsage··on Only Windows 11 Pro will let you install Windows 11 with a local account
I'm on Ubuntu and feeling similarly. OpenBSD is looking more and more intriguing, but the further one pushes off in that direction, the more challenging hardware compatibility and access to important applications become -- or at least, that's my perception so far from the outside.
olivierestsage··on Only Windows 11 Pro will let you install Windows 11 with a local account
Every day I feel like a passive spectator watching the industry move in a direction that is worrying: more telemetry, harsh rules about binary signing that hurt small developers, difficulty of accessing one's own system with full privileges, online accounts required everywhere, pushes to do away with traditional "general-purpose computers" in favor of restricted devices oriented around consumption.

I know that this post is peak HackerNews hipsterism/"old man yells at cloud," so I want to try to make it constructive: what can be done, at this point? What is the strategic move, beyond something like going with Linux or BSD for personal use? Is it too late and we've entered "hope for the best" territory?

Edit: To clarify, I do already use Linux, which wasn't clear from my initial wording. It's just that I worry it isn't "enough."

olivierestsage··on Ask HN: In Emacs, is there an alternative to GPG encryption in Org Mode?
A good place to ask questions like this is the (very friendly) Emacs subreddit.[1]

olivierestsage··on LibreCellular
It has to do with the rhythm of the way words are joined. I'm not a linguist, so I don't know the exact right term to use here, but in English there isn't usually that kind of "pause" sound between words/consonants-- whereas, in my limited knowledge of French, it seems like that is quite common (many words seem to end in -re).
olivierestsage··on LibreCellular
I support F(L)OSS, and this project is wonderful. As a native English speaker, though, I really regret the whole community's collective decision to choose "libre" to refer to software freedom. I understand the etymological origin, but -- to me -- saying "lee bruh" in English is like chewing tinfoil. It strikes me as a tragic failure of marketing.

I seem to remember that one of the names that was rejected in favor of LibreOffice was "Bureau." I wonder how a sleek name like that might have affected the program's fortunes?

olivierestsage··on There are at least 10 different Microsoft design conventions in Windows 11
Yes, I certainly do -- especially Qt.

I'm always wondering whether my preference for this more "traditional" design paradigm just comes from using Win32 in my formative years or some objective difference of quality.

Anyone who shares the sentiment might want to check out the Chicago95 theme[1].

What stopped me was having to click "View rest of discussion" to read a full comment thread. When I clicked it, it didn't show me the discussion, but instead took me to a window with another submission from r/Windows11 in focus. I had to scroll back up to actually find the discussion. Good grief!

Edit: I meant "Continue this thread," not "View rest of discussion."

olivierestsage··on There are at least 10 different Microsoft design conventions in Windows 11
Although my favorite is Win32, Modern/Fluent is the only one that really strikes me as "bad."
