Pixelation is clear on a CRT. Long before people stopped using CRTs, the blocky pixel aesthetic was immediately recognizable to everyone as the “video game look”. The earliest Flash movies on sites like Newgrounds, around the turn of the millennium, used the blocky pixel art style (and we were all still using CRT TVs at that point). I simply don’t see the argument about the pixel aesthetic being not original to that time.
I don’t think there are any sectors of the population that are “overwhelmingly pro-AI” except for: a) people who think it will help them better exploit or surveil others; b) people who think it will raise their social standing by making their deficiencies less obvious if they pass AI work off as their own
If you measure it based on raw quantities of people reacting, sure. The issue is that the people who are upset about this are often tastemakers, whether through their local networks of people or online. It’s like saying a tiny vocal minority of people were pissed off enough about IE to use Firefox— true at one time, but with big consequences
This and the LG TV spying scandal that's also on the front page really highlight for me how unpleasant, shitty, and invasive tech has become. Yeah, I know you can use Linux, at least for now (I do). But things are moving in a bad direction. It's almost to the point of making me, a lifelong computer dork, want to go outside and touch grass. Unthinkable.
I used to think LibreOffice was too far behind the times to be relevant, but now I see a big new use case for people wanting to avoid LLM integrations/data exfiltration. I wish them much success!
I’ve used Fastmail for about 20 years. The worst thing that happened was that because of an outage in 2006, I couldn’t log in to download my homework in time for my teacher to believe I wasn’t faking. The best thing was that I deleted all of my emails in the 2020s due to an IMAP mistake and a human got in contact with me and fixed it. I think that speaks for itself. Definitely not canceling that subscription anytime soon
Rest in peace. Like many here, his performances were hugely influential on my childhood (and adulthood). One I haven’t seen mentioned here yet is Merlin.
How did we get here? Why am I, a lifelong tech enthusiast, on a tech enthusiast board championing someone for resisting technology? I’ve been on HN for years but it’s starting to feel absurd ever since I’ve been out of sync with the whole AI thing. Thanks for listening to my Ted talk.
I feel like a toxic part of this cycle is that a successful fan project has the potential to actually inspire Nintendo to attempt to do the same thing, leading to #2 as a punishment for success.
I think the author would have had a better reception without the triumphant “canceled French tutor” framing. The juxtaposition of “learning a language” with “cutting out the human element” is very off-putting.
No horse in this race because I don’t want a Claude app, but the median Linux user is increasingly just a normal person who doesn’t want spying telemetry or ads or whatever
