oldspiceman··on Why I Walked Away from a $12M Acquisition Offer 18 Months After Our Launch
Feel free to correct my math here:

50% share of business after tax take: 6,000,000x0.7 = 4,200,000 Being extremely conservative and investing in LQD: 4,200,000x3.13%/12 ~ $11,000

Would you walk away from a check for $11,000/month forever?

oldspiceman··on Introducing Driver Destination
Agreed. 'Driver Destination' sounds whack.
oldspiceman··on The Most Popular Drug in America Is an Antipsychotic
This is a great read for anybody with issues sleeping. The vast majority of sleep problems are in your head and after reading this I never had another issue. He debunks the utility of sleeping pills and give you lots of strategies for improving your sleep. http://www.amazon.com/Say-Good-Night-Insomnia-Drug-Free/dp/0...
oldspiceman··on The Most Popular Drug in America Is an Antipsychotic
I met a Swedish nurse who worked in a ward where they treated young people who'd had mental breakdowns. She said the most common cause was a tough life situation. In the short term they would prescribe drugs, but ultimately their treatment was focused on changing that persons life to remove the negativity which spurned the breakdown. Whether it be encouraging them to get a new job or move out of their current living/ relationship situation.
oldspiceman··on The Most Popular Drug in America Is an Antipsychotic
1. Traveling 2. Sunlight 3. Walking 4. Meeting new people (travel, couchsurfing meetings, classes)

Taking an herbal drug can be very helpful psychologically even if it is not proven medically effective (the placebo effect). Just do some research because natural drugs can have harmful side effects too.

oldspiceman··on The Negotiations Game Behind Tesla's Gigafactory
The article states: "He took a process that typically plays out behind the scenes and made it public." and then suggests that his methods were manipulative.

Every successful company negotiates like this. You just never hear about it. They keep it under wraps and as a result nobody knows what really happened behind closed doors.

oldspiceman··on Scientists have located an algal virus that attacks human DNA
Reminds me of that cat virus linked to schizophrenia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxoplasma_gondii
oldspiceman··on The High Cost of Oil
They'll never stop drilling. But there's hope in solar. Check out the chart in this article. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-10-29/while-you-were-gett...
oldspiceman··on Forex Investors May Face $1B Loss as Trade Site Vanishes
High returns with no loss is a massive red flag. Principal protected notes do exist but they are financially engineered to provide you with the smallest return possible while charging a hefty fee for the bank which creates them.
oldspiceman··on Forex Investors May Face $1B Loss as Trade Site Vanishes
Doctors are known for being terrible with money. There are a bunch of investment services especially catered to doctors to help them invest their money. Of course, these are generally rip offs compared to paying $100 a year for a fee based investment plan. But they are better than nothing.
oldspiceman··on Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition now available
This is great for anybody who's had the pleasure of using MonoDevelop

oldspiceman··on The Best Investment Advice You'll Never Get (2008)
tldr If you're suddenly rich, pay $10 and buy $1 Million of Vanguard Total Stock Market Index. Giving your money to anybody else over the last 10 years would have yielded same or worse performance at a higher cost.
oldspiceman··on Doing Business in Japan
I'd love to see Doing Business in Taiwan / Korea / Hong Kong.

On a personal note, I found life in Osaka/Tokyo depressing compared to Taipei and Hong Kong. It felt like Japan's time had come and gone.

oldspiceman··on Doing Business in Japan
These companies have been around for 150 years. Same thing goes in Korea. They employ a massive slice of the populations of both countries.
oldspiceman··on The Affordable Care Act: Who Was Helped Most
Have any states attempted to take control of medical care and negotiate doctor wages / drug prices? Works reasonably well for Canadian provinces. There's got to be a reason it hasn't been done in the states. What is it?
oldspiceman··on More Cities Are Making It Illegal to Hand Out Food to the Homeless
It's hard for me to believe that 'standardized initiatives' are taking care of the problem. If they are being adequately cared for by standardized initiatives they would not want to wander into unsafe areas or beg for food. They need to. Or they are mentally unstable.
oldspiceman··on Mark Zuckerberg Answers Q&A in Mandarin at Chinese University
Comedy is all about the delivery.
oldspiceman··on Failed Startup Post-Mortems
Great idea. Would be useful to have a summary of the business model at the top of each article. For example #68 Overto I've got no idea what they did and I want to know before reading about why they failed.
oldspiceman··on Spain is trying to get rid of Uber: drivers will face fines up to €18K
Can't agree with your point here. It's extremely common to get ripped off by taxis in Spain. There is no incentive for them to be agreeable with foreigners.
oldspiceman··on Earthquake early-warning system gave 10-second alert before Napa quake felt
I was in an earthquake in Hiroshima a few months ago. When the shaking started I was really confused. If my phone was blaring "earthquake" it would have been helpful.

Also, the warning on my iPhone was in Japanese and it was impossible to copy and paste it into a translator it so it was useless.

oldspiceman··on Low-Salt Diets May Pose Health Risks, Study Finds
And stop trying to avoid food. Try adding healthy things to your diet instead. When I can't have something it just makes me want it more. The more healthy stuff you put in there the less room you'll have for crap.
oldspiceman··on A Buddhist monk confronts Japan’s suicide culture (2013)
Short Vice documentary on the forest mentioned in the article. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FDSdg09df8
oldspiceman··on Seoul Moves to Ban Uber, Plans Own App
Now we need Uber to start offering flights in Korea. It's impossible to book a flight in Korea unless you go through Air Busan. Why? Because they all require you to use Internet Explorer and a Korean Credit Card. On the flip side, you can cancel Air Busan flights for only $1. In Japan you can cancel flights at no cost.
oldspiceman··on Ask HN: Whats your stock portfolio/gains look like?
SPY 1 year return is 22%. It's cool if you want to buy single stocks and not index funds, but you should diversify your holdings. At least purchase 5 more names.

oldspiceman··on How I got a medal from the Army for writing code
Amazing work. Imagine if a skilled developer did 2 week rotations in every department.
oldspiceman··on Ask HN: How to invest $1, $10, $100, ...etc.?
VO -- mid-caps have better Sharpe ratios than large-caps... but you'll need $117 for a single share
oldspiceman··on Share: The Icon No One Agrees On
Translating 'share' into chinese yields this nice character: 共

It's unique and memorable after you learn it. Not like the million other arrows we have in icons.

oldspiceman··on Growth Has Been Good for Decades. So Why Hasn’t Poverty Declined?
True but a single measurable criteria is essential. It won't completely capture 'poverty' but it's a step in the right direction. Once the first poverty measure is completely reduced, we could examine the next. I'm amazed that this doesn't exist.
