ok_craig··on One Handed Keyboard
About 20 years ago I wrote a little program to turn my own standard keyboard into something I could type on one hand with. It's basically just T9, with every basic letter key bound to two letters instead of one. (The mirror counterpart from the other side of the keyboard.)

It's a shit demo from college and I always wanted to share the concept but never made it presentable.

ok_craig··on Move deliberately, fix things: How Coinbase is building a cryptocurrency empire
Coinbase itself gives the option of taking salary in crypto.
ok_craig··on What San Francisco Says About America
Maybe SF spends its money more smartly. People complain about the homeless problem in SF but never seem to stop to think that perhaps we have more homeless because there is less incentive to not be homeless in SF. NYC has lower homelessness because the winters are shit and the police are hostile. In SF, the weather is great and police let you shit in the street without much of a confrontation. Is there seriously any question why the rate is higher here? The homeless are treated pretty decently. SF has more homeless because it generally treats them better than the rest of the US, not worse.
ok_craig··on Ethereum hard fork successful with mining majority
Influence is like money. You have an equal right to pursue it, but no right to some quantity of it. Some people have more of it, others less. If you want more, you're gonna have to work for it first.
ok_craig··on Chrome 51 Arrives on Android, Officially Kills Off “Merge Tabs and Apps”
I agree. I loved it, and I miss it.
ok_craig··on Call for a Temporary Moratorium on “The DAO”
daohub.org has a purchase wizard.
ok_craig··on SpaceX's Falcon 9 first stage has landed (again)
How many do they have?
ok_craig··on Gavin Andresen's commit access to Bitcoin revoked, hacking suspected
Wouldn't you agree that a multi-billion dollar market cap, millions of daily tx volume, and a pretty decent price of $400, all of which keep growing in the face of so much "credibility losing", counter it rather nicely?

Humans are folly but the technology speaks for itself.

ok_craig··on Craig Steven Wright claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto
Can you explain why the signature matching one in the blockchain disproves the theory?

I imagine the signature must also be somehow related to his private/public key pair otherwise his blog is just junk cryptography and would have been easily debunked anyway?

ok_craig··on Steam now accepts Bitcoin for purchases
At this point there are many people who simply have bitcoin. Maybe they bought it a long time ago, maybe they bought it recently. The acquisition time isn't really a factor anymore, it's been around long enough that people simply have it, and they would like to be able to spend it directly.

There are not many people specifically acquiring bitcoin just to pay for steam games with it, where it will be converted right back. Maybe some to test. Questioning the value as a result of the "usd -> btc -> usd" transfer isn't really applicable because it just generally doesn't apply anymore.

ok_craig··on That awkward moment when Apple mocked good hardware and poor people
Not sure we read the same article. The author did not dismiss #1 as a plausible motive. He dismissed it as the likely motive, to give Apple the benefit of the doubt, from fear about what it would mean about them otherwise.
ok_craig··on Keybase raises $10.8M
Congrats! Keybase has been making cryptography easier for me and everyone I know.
ok_craig··on The Shake Shack Economy
I almost never eat it, but I still love it when I do.
ok_craig··on The Shake Shack Economy
I actually love the taste of Taco Bell and find Chipotle to be heaping piles of blandness. But all my friends and coworkers prefer it and would laugh at me if I ate cheap fast food, so I end up going to Chipotle more often. It's definitely not for the taste.
ok_craig··on How did Einstein Think?
Not sure why people are always so interested in cutting down other peoples' heroes.

"Oh, Einstein wasn't special, if he didn't get it, the next guy would have. Check out these folks instead." Somehow not sensing the irony that if we all did then worship the other ones you're talking about, you or someone like you would then just make the same claims on those people.. that they're not special, it was about timing and luck.

It's really not about the achievements for some people. (You.) It's just about having a person who only an elite recognizes. You're part of that elite and you're smarter for it because you see this other person's specialness and the rest of the world doesn't and you're better than them for it.

Einstein was great and original and irreplaceable. Your need to have found something better than what the common man worships doesn't make the other heroes you come up with worth any more, or Einstein any less. You just gotta get over it.

ok_craig··on The Career Path I Didn’t Consider, But Should Have
Pretend the company is valued at $1m. Pretend you consider a standard programmer's salary to be $100k. If they offer you a $75k salaray, you are saving them $25k/year. Assuming you'd be there for 4 years (because that's how often most vesting periods are), you are saving them $100k. $100k of the company's $1m comes from your substandard salary. So you should get $100k in equity. That's 10%.

If they try to convince you that you don't deserve that much because the value of the company will rise in the future, ask them where the signed term sheets for the next round are.

ok_craig··on Google Invests $50M in “Made With Code” Program to Get Girls Excited About CS
Writing and programming are basically just thinking, manifested as words or code. Most people either don't enjoy thinking, or are bad at it. I think this has and will be true for a very long time.
ok_craig··on Bitcoin is back: Price quietly jumps 80%
(1) That's not made apparent in the sentence (why leave it for a footnote?), and (2) you haven't explained why that number is actually meaningful.

Edit: I don't know much about this stuff so please correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't the cost of the "externalized price per transaction" be (price_to_mine-block_reward)/number_of_txs. price_to_mine and block_reward would approach each other over time.

ok_craig··on Bitcoin is back: Price quietly jumps 80%
The cost of a bitcoin transaction is not $50, it's about $0.06. Often times, such as for large transactions or moving old coins, you don't need to include a fee at all.
ok_craig··on “Apps may facilitate transmission of approved virtual currencies”
That's almost a tenth of a percent. For just the word "fart" alone that is pretty high.
ok_craig··on Just press go: designing a self-driving vehicle
For most people who own cars, they are an extension of all their other personal space.

I want to be able to leave things in my car and not have to take them out or replace them each time I drive. My sunglasses, the car seat, old-fashioned maps. Maybe I'd like to be able to leave my potato chip wrappers in there without worrying about it, or maybe I'd like to own something where I'm guaranteed others haven't left their potato chip wrappers behind.

Cleanliness. Who else has been in this thing? Did they leave lice behind? Did they jam the window so that when I use the car, there's an annoying breeze?

Style. My car says something about me. Maybe I want rims, or to paint it with flames, or maybe just pink. What about that stereo system?

Status. My car is mine and I can afford it. Like watches, nice clothes, or big houses, it's something people desire.

Practicality. If I don't live in a city, how long is it going to take a rental car to get to me? Why not own one that sits in my driveway, so I don't have to wait for it?

There are plenty of great reasons to want to own a self driving vehicle, instead of renting them.

According to the actual post, it was at least the last 2 times.
ok_craig··on Google said to be working on a tablet with Project Tango 3D vision
Also a larger production number. I didn't see it on the page but I think the phone version was limited to 200 or less or something.

ok_craig··on Buttercoin – US-based Bitcoin exchange
They're all "USD soon" but none of them actually have it. The real race is to getting that available. Til then none of them will really take off, since you can't really trade between USD and bitcoin if you can't deposit or withdraw the USD.
ok_craig··on A Bitcoin Address with 782,000 BTC Moved Through It
I don't understand. What was I suggesting?
ok_craig··on A Bitcoin Address with 782,000 BTC Moved Through It
I don't necessarily believe that this address was related to the theft, only pointing out that the expectation of one transaction containing all the stolen bitcoin is not correct. Yes, using different addresses would be less suspicious.
ok_craig··on A Bitcoin Address with 782,000 BTC Moved Through It
Do you think this means that it is less likely, or more likely to be related to the thefts?

According to Gox, the theft was happening over a long period of time, not one lump sum. Transfers to this address began in April of 2012, which is consistent with the story.

ok_craig··on A Bitcoin Address with 782,000 BTC Moved Through It
The fact that it wasn't all moved today does not mean it isn't related. The theft was due to a leak that happened over a long period of time. The transactions to this address start in April of 2012. That is entirely consistent with the theft. 740k worth of transactions in one day would make it a less likely candidate for being related.
ok_craig··on Joint Statement Regarding the Insolvency of Mt. Gox
The funds were likely stolen, not sent into the void.
